  • I feel like it's hard to make it easier then they've already made it:
    https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/1075738?hl=en#zippy=%2Cfor-family-members-who-manage-their-own-accounts

All it requires is knowing how to read and follow step by step instructions and the parents are in control.

In contrast all the control and surveillance systems being introduced as child protection will end up being used outside their first promised scope.
While "First they came for the porn" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came) sounds silly, if they can ban or control access to sites on a device level then what will they ban next?
Quite many right wing political groups would eye the lgbtq+ movement and they'd probably introduce that as "for the kids" too.

  • I honestly feel that this falls into parental responsibility. Both Android and iPhone comes with parental controls and the same is true for browsers on computers.
    Android example:

    iPhone example:

It's a search away to find step-by-step guides for this stuff, so you don't even need to know how to do it yourself.

  • CalyxOS comes with MicroG just as many of the LineageOS forks but allows you to disable it, among other options.

Options for running microG in CalyxOS

    1. microG disabled
    2. microG enabled, no Google Account, push notifications disabled
    3. microG enabled, no Google Account, push notifications enabled (default)
    4. microG enabled, with a Google Account

  • When is that overview from? I notice it mentions DivestOS which is no more and also that it talks about delayed security updates on CalyxOS.
If you check CalyxOS news you can see that they've published monthly security updates for at least a year now. Often bimonthly.

  • The best solution in that situation is to have a work phone and a personal phone. If your own private phone cannot install the work apps then it's up to your employer to ensure you have the tools you need for your work.
From an IT Security perspective that is what your employer should want too as that allows them to confiscate the phone if letting you go.

  • Waist-to-height ratio can help supplement the BMI measure without needing any special body fat scales or stuff like that.
It's also a really simple one to remember. Keep your waist circumference below half your height.

Our aim was to differentiate the screening potential of waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and waist circumference (WC) for adult cardiometabolic risk in people of different nationalities and to compare both with body mass index (BMI).
    [..]
Compared with BMI, WC improved discrimination of adverse outcomes by 3% (P < 0.05) and WHtR improved discrimination by 4-5% over BMI (P < 0.01). Most importantly, statistical analysis of the within-study difference in AUC showed WHtR to be significantly better than WC for diabetes, hypertension, CVD and all outcomes (P < 0.005) in men and women. For the first time, robust statistical evidence from studies involving more than 300 000 adults in several ethnic groups, shows the superiority of WHtR over WC and BMI for detecting cardiometabolic risk factors in both sexes.

  • I imagine the following communities can be helpful:

    !privacy@programming.dev

But any guide would essentially be:

    • Identify what kind of services and products from Google that you use (ex: Android, Google Maps)
    • Identify replacements for those services and products (ex: GrapheneOS or LineageOS instead of Android and OrganicMaps, OSMAnd or Magic Earth instead of Google Maps)
    • Verify that the replacements work for you
    • Make a plan on how to move to the replacements you have identified. (ex: Backup all important data on the phone before changing OS)
  • I only run it on propane, so when I get the BBQ grill out in spring and burn that one I do the generator too. The "clean" parts of the schedule are a lot simpler if you don't run it on petrol.
