  • Using generative AI in it's current form for any kind of production-quality work is a massive mistake. Anyone can tell from miles away when your images or text have been generated, they always have a weird homogeneity that shaves off all the hard edges, both in writing and visuals. We all need to understand though, that it WILL take a new shape, that the progress is inevitable. The things we're annoyingly surrounded by right now are just the whispers of what the near future has in store.

I have been speaking out against the use of AI for "art" or writing for a while. I have screamed at users that they're in a bubble. I have shaken reality to singularity-bros and I've been called a boomer, a luddite and all the names in the book for trying to tell people they're being conned so that huge companies can milk them with slightly better and slightly better models for years and years.

But through this whole time, I have been following the industry and testing different models. We're so cooked. Our species cannot handle what's coming. It's a ways away still but it's going to totally upend our civilization and about the only thing that can stop it will be a complete societal collapse. Right now, I see either option as equally likely. I'm thinking a 10 - 15 year projection before things start getting really surreal/tragic.

  • Oh absolutely 100% this has had foreign involvement, the KGB handbook (literally) describes how to plant chaotic agents into a democratic nation's population to boost both sides of every social debate or argument. The digital age made this the easiest tactic in the world and every nation that's been "annexed" by Russia experienced this sowing of absolute weaponized bullshit and hate.

edit: several tankies follow me around downvoting my every comment and throwing tankie memes at me because they seeth when someone says that Russia did a bad thing. It's quite charming, they can't do much else because they're blocked.

  • I bet I could harvest bags of salt from a "look how sassy i am" terminally online account like this, but some of us have better things to do than just make other people mad for attention. Have a good one out there. Hope you don't get banned from everywhere.

  • Maybe in private or commercial sector, but defense budgets are NEVER touched. Nor should they be, everyone knows right now the nation that develops the most intelligent strategic prediction systems will basically dominate the world.

  • They want us to all tune out. This is all by design so we don't know what's real or not anymore, then they can get away with even more and nobody will care.

This is what they've been doing for years and years, this is just more of the same.

  • I have people on my team who use AI in their daily work, they describe it as like a "mirror" you can use to feed your ideas into and reshape or analyze in new ways. It doesn't have any reasoning or thinking capability outside of what you type into it.

I am really critical of generative AI being used as a substitute for actual work, that's where it tends to fail miserably. I cannot stand people who let AI do their writing or graphical projects for them, but I have no issue with people using it to help them complete a project with references, ideas and suggestions. Just don't let it do the work, because it is, by definition, an "averaging machine" so that everything it outputs is supremely... average.

  • In about 15 - 20 years we're really going to miss the days of debating whether or not LLM image and video generation is ethical or not.

We're in the "simpler times" that we will long for someday. Yes, that should terrify you.

  • Public sector hype may change forms, but governments and corporations and financial institutions are going to be quietly developing this tech like it's the cold-war all over again. Maximum effort, no brakes.

  • Wait until you learn that all of these trends and waves are actually clever marketing, designed to boost actual homespun jokes, memes and cultural topics into full-on marketing campaigns with reddit and twitter shills pretending to be "pissed at the noisy kids in the theater" as a way to boost engagement and debate about a product.

Yes good sir, I too am really upset by the loud kids in the kid's movie, why couldn't I just watch this mish-mash of loud noise and color in peace 🙄

  • anarchocapitalism is still anarchism

Sounds more like people who want to have luxuries and comforts and money but don't want to have anyone telling them what they can and can't do.

Sounds about right for the current fascist techbro community.

  • West Virgina is still the leading coal-mining state in the entire US with over 14,000 employees, most of them working underground. It's not a vast number but yeah, the "vibes" are there and that's what people will always connect with.

  • My parents raised me out in the wilderness in a literal compound and hour from the nearest convenience store with no phone or even a mailbox.

So yeah.... I had to learn everything about the world through a little black-and-white TV in my room that had big ol' rabbit ear antenna that if I moved just right, I could get PBS from another town that had a lot of educational programming. As long as it wasn't about "evolution" they were fine with me watching PBS.

If it wasn't for PBS I would probably be dead. Seriously, that life doesn't do a person well, both my parents and a sibling drank themselves to death, others are on the way. I however, learned science, and biology, and how to read and how to do math and a host of other topics that I am going to be an eternal sponsor of PBS for. There was one special that explained sex to some degree, but was still heavily censored. My parents were too busy being high and religious to dream of having an awkward talk with their son, so I was totally on my own.

Thankfully, I learned where to find the "relationship" books on my rare ventures into town to visit places like bookstores and managed to learn a lot about sex from pilfering a book from the sex and relationship section and reading it in the kid's books section.

  • This reads like one of those reddit posts on like, /r/memes where some 17-year-old posts a meme or wojack of eye rolling exasperation that politics exist and people are talking about the world.

    That said, yeah lets drink.
