  • We need to store the waste for thousands of years. This is bad.

I feel like you didn't read my comment and just wanted to talk about thorium. Which is fine, yes I know it generates less waste and creates its own fuel and all that, I am speaking about nuclear waste as we know it right now, from our hundreds of traditional power plants, the things that MOST people associate with dangers of nuclear waste. Which I explained is not even remotely the problem people think it is, because the actual amount is so small and those thousands of years pass in a blink of an eye deep under earth's crust.

Thorium is good. Traditional nuclear power is also good.

  • I love how almost none of this discussion is about nuclear power or thorium and just about people wanting to feel morally correct about something and snarling back and forth at each other accusing the other of supporting genocide.

Our species is so cooked. We must be the first species to evolve with our heads up our own asses.

  • For the amount of actual nuclear waste, it kind of is. Earth is so huge and the amount of waste so small, that you could bury literally ALL of it under a mountain somewhere and chances are high that it would never see daylight again nor would never be found by anyone in the future.

Even despite this, extraordinary measures are taken to make sure nothing escapes the containment until such time that Earth's crust has completely rolled down into the mantle or the mountain erodes, which by then it wouldn't be nuclear waste anymore.

  • Lemmy is barely a thing. Lets not get ahead of ourselves.

People do prefer centralized platforms with shiny front-faces and easy-to-navigate corporate bullshit. The reason why that stuff is so successful is because it works.

People fled to Bluesky because advertisers moved to Bluesky.

  • But maybe some kind of resilience to the forces of destruction plaguing commercial social media.

This isn't going to be the effective slogan that turns the masses who are finally just barely starting to fill Bluesky.

As soon as any platform sees a measure of success, it becomes a product and thus vulnerable. If we want social media that isn't just a massive propaganda and advertising machine, I feel like we need to change something else.

Like physically storming corporate offices and returning the means of production to the people?

    Maybe.

  • "Liberal America" isn't a group of people in the abstract, these are our judges, our lawyers, our civil servants and our accountants and our food drivers. There is great power in that, which is why so many people desperate to hold onto their wealth for so long have worked so hard to make us all think that kind of power isn't as good as money or fame. When it's far, far more powerful.

Someone wrote a book about it once, spawned a few big movements. Might have heard of it.

Maybe it will be midterm votes, maybe it will be marches and protests, maybe it will be full on riots. Do not underestimate what happens when enough people start to worry about their safety, security and where their next meal will come from.

  • It's very naive of people to think that in an authoritarian dictatorship controlled by the world's wealthiest people, that there won't be a LOT of unjust deaths in the coming years.

I will be positively shocked if they don't make a very public example of Mangione. It's going to hurt and that's what they want. They want to kill him in front of us so we feel pain. Then they're going to do it again and again with other people whom we don't want to see die. Remember that. This is what happens.

This is what 45% of eligible voters thought would never happen so they stayed home. Too much trouble. Too hard to figure out the truth (by googling for 30 seconds). Too many excuses to not rock the boat, and now the boat is rocking us all out.

  • Yah, I would encourage people trying to dismiss LLMs and the future to actually try out some of the newer models. People are so fucking cooked, ya'll have no idea. We're going to face billions of people plugged into these things, falling in love with them, hanging on their every generated word, using them for literally every possible decision in life.

They're seductive and powerful and can recognize patterns in your behavior specifically that will startle you and make you question what you know. If you're smart, you will understand that this has a lot more to do with how simple our minds are than how magical the AI is, but the vast majority of ignorant people are going to lose themselves and just lean on LLM's a thousand times harder than they lean on their phones and social media right now.

Parents, teach your kids to limit internet time. Please, teach them language and critical thought and not to trust their senses online.

  • Sigh.

The idea is that the only way to combat AI content is with AI content filters that can recognize plagiarized or copied works.

It's a predictable offered solution to a problem that companies don't want to go away. Of course they're going to suggest more of their product to cure the problem caused by their product. See: The NRA in the US.

The thing is, it's probably right, at this point unless we all just decide to make a new internet that requires verification of some kind, the only way we maintain the corpse of the internet as it is currently is if we start using really beefy software to auto-moderate content on a much larger scale than just making laws that AI content needs to be tagged, and the AI situation is going to get a LOT worse. Humans are going to have a much harder time figuring out what's real in very short order, as if it wasn't already bad enough.

No really, we're in for some shit, the AI wave isn't going away, it's barely getting started.

  • It's an attempt to normalize the fear/hate of LGBTQ+ people on an international level. As long as the administration continues to constantly press this issue, much like the "mere exposure" advertising effect, it doesn't matter if people believe it nor not, the more times people hear a thing, the more likely they are to adopt that belief or feeling, even to a tiny degree.

That tiny degree, when continually pressed, when continually exposed, over large populations, influences a large number of people.

As long as they have an enemy group they can pin their problems on, they will keep going and keep ramping up the atrocities until we see mass graves. Again. (Seriously, how many times do we have to see mass graves in our nations before we decide that our leadership needs to be thrown down a well.)

If you guys care, please don't just rant on Lemmy or other internet spaces. Go talk to your family members. Talk to your friends. If you don't have friends, GO MAKE FRIENDS. GO MAKE ENEMIES. Our anti-social, paranoid, self-absorbed internet shut-in culture is making all of this tragedy possible.

Guys, you HAVE to push through those terrifying feelings of engaging with strangers. You HAVE to get social again. We don't win this behind keyboards.

  • This is actually great.

I mean, I know this is going to be a cynical take, but I have nothing left but cynicism towards my country.

If the administration starts persecuting white Americans, that's far more likely to rile up middle-class, liberal America than if people with "exotic" names like 'Garcia" get deported. It sucks but it's true, our country is built on a foundation of mildly xenophobic middle-class liberals who don't really care what happens politically until they feel personally threatened, and at this point I really, really want them to feel the danger so there's some chance of recovering this tragic slide back into the fucking dark-ages.

  • Daily reminder that the USA is literally falling to a dictatorship no different than any of the other dictator-led nations around the world like Chad, Sudan, North Korea, Burma, Iran, Pakistan, Laos and so many others.

What? You can't relate because they're not white? Get it together people, skin color has been a distraction since the dawn of human migration, if you're still compartmentalizing nations and people's by how they look, you're going to all lose all your happy comforts and shiny toys.

  • I feel like the US is really not getting the memo here, this is fascist dictatorship swaddled in an American flag. This is what dictators do, the next steps are dismantling the other institutions and agencies that could potentially preserve the old country's rules and laws. As they are already doing blatantly.

Guys... the US is falling. Why aren't people organizing?

  • No, avoiding contention is why we're in this mess and why the world is segregated again.

But I'm not going to say "Go argue on the internet" I am going to tell everyone to get the fuck over their social issues and just TALK to the people in your life who hold shitty positions and are either dimwitted about politics, uninvolved or being brainwashed by social media. They can be turned, I do it ALL THE TIME and I feel like I'm the only fucking human left who doesn't feel overwhelming fear engaging with another human ffs.
