  • I'd say it's lazy and incompetent management, i.e the #techbros and people that have failed upwards.

  • The only unasked question is the silly one. If you scroll down to the bottom of your Lemmy instance in the web browser, you should see the current one you're on. It should like something like this:

  • A proxy app would still leak metadata though. Metadata would be enough to meet the legal reasonable personal standard to show that one intended to thwart the ban. I have the advantage of having both a Criminal Justice degree and significant technical background.

  • Rather than trying to muck with dual booting, I would recommend picking up a Lenovo T430S or better laptop on Amazon from around 150.00-500.00. Lenovo ThinkPad T series laptops are incredibly well supported by Linux. Then install Linux Mint. This is a great way to get started with a low barrier to entry. As you get better, you can start tinkering with the innards. By getting a cheap spare machine with which to learn Linux on, it will be the least disruptive to you.

  • Yes there is. To do so look for the line with image: statement and do something like image: dessalines/lemmy-ui:latest Try this. You may not even have to do that. First try the plain old docker-compose pull. Since now enough time has elapsed, I am guessing that it should pull the latest image without having to edit the docker-compose.yml file.

  • So it would support Google's proprietary API and ActivityPub? That would work.

  • This is why the affair is laughably ironic. What I would really like to see is GNU, EFF, and the FSF pool some resources and go after IBM in the courts to get an injunction to stop this behavior. If I were a betting man, I'd say that this is in progress and that a public announcement has not yet been made.

  • It would be an appreciable challenge because the plugin would have to know what server and account to post the comments to. That much said, I think it is a fine idea. On one side of the coin, I'd rather get people over to PeerTube and build that platform up rather than help Google get more un-needed revenue.

  • The way Rolling Stone put it, Twitter welcomed the Taliban with open arms as if to say, "Please come in. The water's warm so you might as well swim." Elon Musk is facist and a support of fellow fashies.

  • Which is why I don't defend it. I merely point out the irony and hypocrisy of those we elect to run our government for us. I'd much sooner spend time trying to rid our government of authoritarian wanna bees and advocates. I think I am good just simply choosing not to use it and washing my hands of the whole matter altogether.

  • I fully agree that what IBM did was basically openly and flagrantly violate the GPL. I just find it very ironic that Oracle, of all companies, has the cojones to call out Red Hat when Oracle is the champion of playing unfairly with open source. Oracle is one of the companies that wrote the definition of embrace, extend, and extinguish along with Microsoft and even IBM.

  • Yes, go to your Lemmy instance and run a docker-compose pull. This should pull the latest updates for you. Before pulling the latest instance, I would recommend running docker-compose down first. This worked for me but I set my instance up without using Ansible. That much said, I believe it should work for you as well. You might need to edit the docker-compose.yml file and specify the version as latest.

  • I've never had a color laser printer so I would be none the wiser on that front. I hate the whole "genuine product" movement. I thought a federal court ruled that companies cannot force their customers to use only company-branded cartridges. I don't know. Maybe I am not remembering correctly.

  • I can still find the ROMs for the classic NES, SEGA, and TurboGrafix 16 platforms. But that's only a subset of the desired ones. Where are they going?

  • They can ban it through other means that would involve your arrest, prosecution, and potential incarceration. If they catch your device with TikTok installed you could face those kinds of criminal penalties. Remember that your mobile phone is identifiable by IMEI to you the owner. I know that it's incredibly fascist, dystopian, and authoritarian all rolled into one but the potential does exist for this to happen. If it's banned, I don't know that I am ready to be a martyr for the cause of free speech because I don't know that I will get any help and I am just a poor working class guy that is almost always about 2 or 3 paychecks from homelessness.

  • I get that you aren't excusing TikTok. You rightly point out the double standard. It's okay if an Amurican (misspelling intentional) company mines data and sells out its own citizens? I think not.

  • I would say first and foremost be kind to yourself, @SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml. Strengthening your willpower begins with good self-care techniques. Set regular, realistic, and achievable goals and when you achieve them, do something positive for yourself. Too often we are our own worst enemies and by beating yourself up you actually make it harder to achieve what you really want. This is something I struggle with even though I do not have ADHD. Will-power comes not from negative reinforcement but from the positive kind. 😀

  • I get a lot of value from my 150.00 ThinkPad T430s but then all I do is web browsing and occasionally compiling software on it so not exactly intensive things. It's a basic machine. A ThinkPad T series closer to 500.00 would be very functional.

  • I am sorry that this has happened @ReiRose@lemmy.world . Are you able to go to your state's Department of Labor? HR may be full of shit and it certainly wouldn't be the first or last time.

  • I would say PeerTube looks like the best alternative to YouTube. I haven't explored it personally but it is on my to-do list along with standing up a Friendica instance. I've been off of Facebook since 2017. I've been off of Twitter since November of 2022.
