  • The same as anywhere else on the internet. Anonymity is the user’s responsibility, not the platform. This is generally the case.

The server operator and every hop on the network, along with dns has your IP. Tor or a trustworthy VPN on a burner phone hotspot driving around in a van with an untraceable Craigslist laptop would do the trick.

  • You’re a coffee drinker, it’s ok to be offended. That’s the withdrawal. Try to find credible, verifiable, reproducible evidence to justify how many times we hear about the “health benefits” of coffee. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

  • This. The technology is here to stay and will literally change the world. In a few years when the Sora and SD3 models are released and well understood, and desktop GPUs begin offering 24GB vram to midrange cards out of demand, it will be crazier than we can imagine. LLMs are already near human level with enough compute. As tech gets faster and commoditized, everyone becomes and artist and a programmer. Information will no longer be trusted, and digital verification technology will proliferate.

    Invest now.

That and nuclear batteries capable of running pi like machines for decades. 1w is on the horizon by BetaVolt.

  • Ahhh, true value add to society. Trust fund babies sitting on the beach being funneled money for work they had no part of. It’s almost like it doesn’t make a lot of sense unless you want a subset of rich people and a whole bunch of middle class workers to labor for them.

  • I’ll play devil’s advocate. The machine recorded estimated age and gender. Assuming it tracked statistics and didn’t store images, what is the real harm? Future candy will have different designs after they found most users were 70yr old grandpas?

It is anonymized PII data collected without explicit consent, sure, but don’t blow it out of proportion. There is no big surveillance state plot here (yet), just an overzealous marketing team.

  • With immutable distros you can try a silverblue and switch to kinoite with a reboot on an already running system and it will just work and run your flatpaks. The base image it runs does not get corrupted. You cannot make changes (easily) to the base to corrupt it. Your apps and files are just an overlay or mounts on top of the system. Your machine lights on fire, if you have a network backup, it will fire up on any hardware and be the same. It’s much cleaner and allows for easy os switching.

You could theoretically make windows work and be switchable.

  • It’s the capitalist system we’re born into. It’s time living in a cocoon where these magic products appear to guide you. Then one day you wake up realizing they’ve been drinking your blood all this time. Open source might not lead to your perfect product, but it will be close, and mandatory profit seeking won’t turn the ecosystem hostile against the users. We leave that to the mods and server operators.

  • I’m with you for the most part, but I’m slowly moving over to podman over docker for security and simplicity. LXC is convenient for proxmox, and you can make a golden snapshot, store your data and config in a bind mount, and replicate some of docker’s features. Lately, I run a privileged lxc with rootless podman running dockge. Seems to work well for now.
