Basic research. I left basic research because research in academia is a lost cause, killed by lack of funding, hyper toxic environment, rat race to the bottom, mafias and corruption.
It is so bad that I feel a much more morally cleaner environment working in finance.
I would go back doing what I used to do, but without the baggage that forced most of us to leave
I was there in the 80s and 90s. You young people are definitely luckier. You are by far more beautiful, more gentle, you are more welcoming, you don't discriminate against gays and nerds. Socializing without mobiles was as boring as you can expect.
Do not spend too much time regretting a period that was meh at most
Few decades ago probably, nowadays "scientists" make a lot of bs claims to get published. I was in the room when a "scientist" publishing several nature per year asked to her student to write a paper for a research without any result in a way that it looked like it had something important for a relatively good IF publication.
That day I decided I was done with academia. I had seen enough.
They do. They are just looking for cheap way to store energy. They don't care if batteries are big, heavy and less efficient, they need something as cheap as possible for a range of use cases where cost is important.
Lithium is expensive. My bet is that, on the long term, sodium will be used for such use cases. But in practice decision must account for practical limitations, primarily supply chain
Working in a data intensive context, I saw such migrations very often, from and to oracle, ms sql, postgres, sas, exasol, hadoop, parquet, Kafka. Abstraction, even further than orms, is extremely helpful.
Unfortunately in most real case scenarios companies don't value abstraction, because it takes time that cannot be justified in PI plannings and reviews. So people write it as it is quicker, and migrations are complete re write. A lot of money, time and resources wasted to reinvent the wheel.
Truth is that who pays doesn't care, otherwise they'd do it differently. They deserve the waste of money and resources.
On the other hand, now that I think of it, I've never seen a real impacting OS migration. Max os migration I've seen is from centos or suse to rhel... In the field I work on, non unix OSes are always a bad choice anyway
Apparently id software helped with the shooting part. They are the best in town for it, I am not surprised that it's improved compared to fallout games, that have pretty bad shootings
Do you consider 4chan competition?
It's 4chan, it's in its own category of craziness
