  • Okay sounds like you prefer to do nothing productive while others work on solutions. If you are correct in your assumptions, I hope you're preparing for what you believe is coming.

  • Reread it, double negative.

Edit: oops, sorry. Removed this myself for being wrong.

  • Personally I've been: connecting to local mutual aid networks and engaging loved ones in community efforts, offering what time, energy and resources I can to these causes; preparing myself and others for disaster by stocking up on staples and anything you need every day or is otherwise important such as water and important medicine; encouraging better decision making and critical thinking by providing tools, resources, and support that allows others to decide what is right for them I.e. give examples of steps they can take to help others and end the cyclical perpetuation of harm and brainstorm ways that they can get their needs met more effectively and ethically.

This is not everything I do but it's what feels most accessible to the largest number of people to me so it's what I said. This is just my perspective but for what it's worth I'm much, much happier the more I do to really live in my values, I feel my actions and beliefs are more consistent than before and I get so much positive feedback that is validating and encouraging. I am privileged in many ways and I recognize that, I have suffered and struggled but I still have a lot to be grateful for and I am trying to use that to maximize benefit for those without as much privilege who need it most while I still have access to some resources and the energy and connections to utilize them, while also doing internal and external work with professional support folks and in my personal life to stop perpetuating harm and instead making positive change in ways I have control over like how I communicate and what I give my time to.

Eta: I know I'm not who you asked but I responded as if you were asking because you feel frustrated and scared like I do and want to know what others are doing to help the situation. I hope you weren't just asking as a gotcha.

Another example of something I am working on that might be accessible to folks here is a cloud folder full of evidence of negative policy trends and other happenings, resources for preparing, etc. That I then share with family and others.

Edit again: I also acknowledge some or even all of this isnt possible or easy for everyone, and if you need more specific support please feel free to reach out via message, we can connect on a more secure platform if you prefer or the conversation warrants it. I do have knowledge on some topics related to disability and neurodivergence and some resources around that, as well as other topics, some that I don't necessarily want to list in a comment. I am not any kind of expert but do try to meet people where they are at and seek solutions to real problems. This offer is for anyone reading this comment who seeks in good faith to help things get better, and that can happen one step at a time. Together we create something that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Edit: one more thing. If someone would like to contribute any kind of writing or speaking on or support and/or labor towards the data privacy of a specific illness prevention focused mutual aid group based in a city in the US via the establishment of a self hosted communication server or other software guidance or just any advice or support in any way would be greatly appreciated by a lot of marginalized folks I know. There could be some form of a trade, possibly a skill share or help meeting some other need you have in the form of support, labor, resources, etc.

  • You don't seem to care much about the incalculable damage done to (and over time the rapid expansion of) the disabled population caused by the cult of capitalism and any and all consequences of the perpetuation of said cult. I find that to be pretty horrific honestly, it affects me personally and many people I know and care about, so I take a lot of care not to perpetuate harm by taking steps to understand the ways that harm comes to people and the part I play in that. "Distasteful" is an understatement.

  • It sounds to me like you haven't actually talked to many of these people, or at least actively listened to them and tried to understand their concerns. Think this through. At what point do things get better if we don't start changing how we do things now? What do you prefer to do, and/or suggest as a solution, if those two things are not one and the same?

Edit: also idk about you but I've already been in an era of suffering, I've been disabled and marginalized and mistreated, and so have many others. To me, treating people as complex beings with layers upon layers of motivations and ideas and beliefs and sensitivities and so on is an important part of respect and I see it as necessary if we are ever going to be able to change how things work and end the global perpetuation of harm.

  • Thank you. That person is either extremely misguided or arguing in bad faith.

  • What a horrifying thing to say. To me this reads as if the cost of the lives of the elderly and disabled folks (not your own country's disabled or elderly folks, of course) who rely on social security and other federal and federally funded programs is well worth what you consider to be a desirable outcome. Its not realistic and it feels bloodthirsty. Please tell me if I'm misunderstanding.

  • Then fucking do it.

    I am.

I'm just respecting their choice. Why can't you?

Because many of them made the choice under extreme duress; because they are people who deserve at least the chance to learn and become engaged in helping others; because, as I have stated, I believe the manipulation is pervasive and powerful and generations old and I don't fault people for falling victim to it. I understand you are frustrated. I understand it's hard to put yourself in others' shoes. The solution is not to exclude, but to understand what got us here and start doing the work, internally and externally, to create a better system from the ground up that will ultimately give individuals the tools to make better choices that are consistent with what they really believe, when not under threat of starvation/being cut off from or bankrupted by health care/homelessness/imprisonment/violence/etc.

Edited to add: I missed a couple things at the end of my first comment. I said "Convince individuals make better choices and take action." I meant to convey that what I'm saying is what I recommend one does to make change, by giving others the tools, support, opportunities, and motivation to make better choices and take action, and set the example that such things are possible, quite literally being the change you want to see in the world.

  • I feel very heard and understood from reading this response. I'm glad it was received how I intended it to be. My first reaction was to be a bit harsher and speak from an emotional place nd I'm glad I thought twice and wrote a comment that was more accurate and effective. It means a lot that you took what I said seriously and even had some self reflection that may make a difference in another's life. Thank you.

  • All of the recommendations go through a mandatory "Bezos Filter"

  • Things people bought together: three different stand-up fridge-freezer combos

  • people ... literally do not matter

Um, what? Even with the rest of the sentence, these people have been manipulated so thoroughly that they hold, in my opinion, very little of the blame, to the point where it's not at all worth assigning it to the group as a whole. It's not productive and it doesn't help anything. Convince individuals to make changes and take action.

  • Also if a bystanders life is at risk. That would be the ideal implementation in a similar system IMO anyways, I don't think this is the way we should be dealing with problems as a whole though, e.g. every cop having a gun is unnecessary and harmful.

  • Thank you, that is a great answer that helps me both feel better and take steps if necessary. 10/10 would ask again.

Edit: sorry I know this sounds sarcastic but I really am grateful.

  • I saw that, that's what I meant by "it sounds like it has the capabilities to spy", something that can do all those things must have lots of access and could provide perfect cover for any number of undesirable processes.

  • I'm sure this wiki page is fine and very useful, but fandom itself is not a very good place to host it. Thats all I meant by that.

  • My stove has a "hood"/fan that runs through the microwave and into a cabinet and that's it. What can I do? After reading all this I intend to keep the window open nearby when cooking, and I always have two large air purifiers running in the living room attached to the kitchen.

  • One example I can think of is that it could be a safe food for someone with an eating disorder or sensory considerations.
