  • Yes you're good. The ads are basically lying, or at least vastly overblowing the importance of VPN. It's nice to have in some situations, but no, hackers won't immediately pwn you as soon as you connect to a McDonald's wifi.

  • IceRaven, Android FF fork, has this feature as an option, and it's very cool when using permanent private browsing mode. It makes it less likely that the OS will kill the browser in the background.

  • I'd like the Reddit style flairs. On communities, mods could set up a bunch of flairs for people to choose from when making a new post. Also be able to assign a user flair.

I think this is useful for distinguishing e.g. questions from debates or memes.

Twitter-style (hash)tags, I understand why they exist but I don't care for them. Everyone just puts all the tags into every post anyway. Communities on Lemmy serve mostly the same purpose anyway. Like, would technology posts on technology communities have technology tags? Silly.

  • Amateur here, can only convey what I remember from reading. In sleep mode the the cpu wakes up regularly to do things that are needed for background services and connectivity.

Now, "regularly" may still mean hundreds of times a second between milliseconds of sleep. These wake cycles are also synchronised with other parts of the system, especially networking.

Similarly, cpu will sleep even if the phone is awake but not very active, but will wake more frequently.

  • I love audiobooks and audio shows. I don't mind reading, but I spend too much time looking at screens, so that's a great way to rest the eyes, especially when such sick in bed. Or when not sick, I can do other things while listening, like cook.

Also lots of productions have audio effects, music etc, which can enhance the experience. Some people don't like it, but I've started with audiobooks with Star Wars books, and how awesome it is to start a book with that iconic SW music?

Main disadvantage of audiobooks is difficult searching. If you remember hearing something and want to get back to it, it's a lot more difficult. Also especially with sci-fi themes, you don't get to know how things are spelled, making it hard to look up.

  • I don't think FairPhone customers are exactly regular consumer population, and there was a strong backlash against removing the jack in fp4 (and introducing ewaste wireless buds). So either the people we buying the phones anyway, or the company has so many customers they don't give a shit.

  • You drank too much Apple koolaid

  • It's even wilder that they didn't learn the lesson after fp4. Did people really just complain and then buy it anyway? How many phones can they sell that they can afford to piss off their customers like this? I just don't understand how is the smartphone market so borked.

  • In the sense that vegans want vegan food available in vegan stores? Cause that's the equivalent of wanting a headphone jack in a phone from a company that sells their products on all these promises.

  • I'd say the change in Calculator from W7 to W8 was more than cosmetic. Never have I stared at my 27" 2.5k monitor so stupidly than when I first launched calculator on W8 and that thing blew up over the entire screen with no proper way to leave it on top of other windows.

I think that's when it really had to be clear to everyone that MS has no idea how humans use computers.

  • Long tap works in the last two versions.

But I was hoping you were asking about preview of the actual web site rather than the url, ha. Anyone knows the solution to that? Some apps have a simplifier browser that can view web pages in reader mode.

  • Yes but not really as a competitor to Android. Its survival just shows that it always was a viable system though, which makes it even worse that FF abandoned it.

  • I kinda understand why they do this. Android has slowly been going the route to be only for dummies that shouldn't be able to touch anything. And most device makers are completely fine with it, evidently.

What's needed is a really decent alternative OS, or several, with widespread support across devices.

Yea there's Graphene, but in terms of devices, do you want this year's Google, last year's Google, or an overpriced recycled phone? And in terms of firmware the situation is even more difficult.

Even 10 years later I'm still mad at Firefox for letting go of their FF OS.

  • I'm two minds about it - on one hand, I have the feeling of missing out on this whole thing; on the other hand, I do believe it's very unwise to bring new kids into this world.

I get to babysit my friends' kids sometimes tho, and maybe that's the best of both worlds. Still get to engage with kids and have fun with them, but also don't need to deal with worries, especially about their futures.

I've been wondering how realistic it would be for a single guy to adopt, or be a foster parent or something. But considering how stupidly difficult it can be for even well-adjusted, middle class couples to adopt, I'm quite sure it's unrealistic. Never mind the suspicion and prejudice men face when it comes to caring for kids. I won't even get into that...

  • Yea it was more typically a cesspit of insults and weird porn. This is an improvement.

But again I don't see why it matters. If you browse /all, you get what you get. The cheap garbage on YouTube's Hot is much worse.

  • It's the "most popular" from all around the world, of course it's gonna be generic. It's either this stuff, or more Ukraine war, or memes.

Nothing is preventing you from scrolling down, or switch to different sorting, or watch specific subs... Honestly, going to the Hot section, and expecting something suited to your specific tastes, and being upset that it's too generic - that's pretty ironic.
