  • Isn’t .world the most populous instance? Hmm…

This is interesting. I get the impression that some admin/mods truly don’t understand how the Fediverse operates. They ban one (or a few) instance name(s), but there are so many more that they might not even recognize as Lemmy links, which get past the radar.

At the same time, there are fears here that .world could become disproportionately powerful compared to other instances, due to its high user count.

So in a way, Reddit blocking traffic to .world while permitting links to other instances can benefit us all. Smaller instances gain users, which is an important step toward balancing things out and keeping any one instance from becoming too powerful. Thanks, Reddit!

(I recognize the irony of saying this while having a .world account. I wasn’t aware of its standing in Lemmy when I made it. I am also still learning the Fediverse myself and don’t know how to transfer my account to another instance yet.)

  • You may be a leader and you may be Jewish, but I interpreted that comment to specifically mean the people in power who maintain this connection. That is, “you guys” sounds like an appeal to the Jewish leaders referenced in the article, the US leaders that support the ADL, or both.

I might be wrong, I don’t know OP or what they truly believe. If there is context I’m missing that changes the message, I will stand corrected.

  • Oh hey, we had someone handing out hand warmers too! She saw me and my girlfriend trading one pair of gloves between us and asked if we wanted a warmer. It was a sweet gesture, the kind of look-out-for-your-neighbor thing we were all there for.

  • I went to my local capitol protest today and it went peacefully. I was prepared for (and very much expecting) escalation. I wrote the ACLU phone number on my leg, left my phone at my girlfriend's house, and carried pepper spray in my pocket. My gf and I (and a number of other people) wore medical masks. We also brought clear, full-face shields in our bag too, just in case.

The capitol and the police station were near each other; lots of cops drove by our crowd, but thankfully that's the only interaction we had with them. But a lot of drivers, bicyclists, and other passers-by made noise in solidarity.

I should also probably note that I live in a blue state. I haven't heard yet about the experience in red and purple states, but hopefully people will be sharing their stories soon.

One last thing - I'm glad you made the note about phones. Apparently some of the people at the protest reasoned, "I might get arrested, therefore I should bring my phone." Then they were confused when I used the exact same reason to justify me not bringing my phone. Do people not realize that the police seizes a person's belongings when they arrest them? Considering the way this administration is going, I wouldn't be surprised if they rewrote the law to allow police to break into phones without a warrant. At the very least, they certainly won't stop cops who do it unlawfully.

  • The incarceration rate is entirely due to blacks being relegated to poverty and re-enslaved by the system we all apparently supported before Trump.

The black stats are largely to do with poverty, not with being black.

Wait, so you understand that many black people are systemically relegated to poverty, but disagree that poor black people being incarcerated at higher rates is related to them being black? I can't quite follow your logic here.

If A (being black) leads to B (higher chance of poverty), and B leads to C (higher rates of incarceration), then A also leads to C.

  • nobody is forcing anyone to say “all x are y” because someone else is (I agree, in bad faith) doing the same thing.

Legal documents are being made to say that all x (transgender individuals) are now y (the wrong gender) because someone else (the government) is making them say so.

  • It doesn't sound like a very wise idea for the government to betray people who have been trained for covert ops, who may also already know how to find people that are willing to take action against the current government.

But what do I know. I'm not qualified to be president*

*Too poor, too female, and too focused on the good of the people. I have an ice cube's chance in hell.

  • For themselves. They only care about what will impact themselves. If the power grid got cut in the poorer parts of town, but their own power stayed on, most rich people wouldn't give a damn. Just like with lead water pipes, or budget-starved public schools, or the myriad of other issues that impact millions of non-rich people, they will let this shit happen for as long as they're not affected by it. No benevolent rich people are going to come out of the woodwork to save us.

  • By this logic, the less predictable your daily life is, the more "alive" you are.

So for a lot of us, to be "alive" is to experience constant anxiety about what's about to happen.

    ...

    Actually, that tracks.

  • Some fools will reflexively downvote any time they see the word “vegan,” yet I wouldn’t be surprised if knowledge of egg alternatives ends up making a difference in times like these.

With agricultural workers being deported and tariffs increasing the price of food sourced from abroad, Americans are going to have to get creative and flexible with their food habits. We don’t know yet how our grocery store shelves will end up looking, but if someone needs a substitute for an ingredient in a recipe, chances are a group of people already avoids that ingredient and thus has the knowledge of how to work around it. They may be vegan, they may have food allergies, they may have religious restrictions, or they may simply dislike a particular ingredient. Regardless of their reasons, the point is they’ve already experimented with recipes to figure out what works, which means the rest of us don’t have to trial & error everything ourselves.
