  • And then there are the rest of us. Not quite young anymore, but we were robbed of the chance to even have anything to anchor us down. We've been squeezed out of the housing market nearly our entire adult lives. We never could justify having a child, perhaps because of money, perhaps because our consciences wouldn't let us, perhaps because of both. We job-hop every few years already, as it's the only way we've ever received a sizable pay raise.

There is no house, no child, and no job for us to worry about losing. I don't know about y'all, but I've been doing little more than fighting to get by for far too long.

I'm ready to fight for something else.

  • It feels wrong to hit the "block" button for something I'm simply not interested in, but ever since I started using it to curate my home page, the content has become more relevant to me. Personally, I never had the patience to get into coding, so I block communities about it. I have nothing against it, and I love that coders have communities they can take part in, but blocking that topic means more space for things I like when scrolling through All.

I think Lemmy's still in the process of maturing. I would love to see the kind of niche communities that Reddit has, where the topic of the sub is oddly specific yet not polarizing. I even have an idea for one that can provide some of that energy, but I'm trying to save up more content for potential posts before taking the leap to create it.

  • I feel like the lack of karma adds in to the civility, but I can't say that for certain. On Reddit, seeing someone's karma count seems to sway people's opinions before even reading what that person says. But here, those votes don't carry over. In other words, each comment offers a "clean slate."

There are a few usernames I see and interact with here often. Sometimes I agree with a comment, sometimes I disagree with a comment, but without a total karma count tied to every user, each comment is free to stand on its own regardless of who said it. One bad take doesn't spoil a person's reputation. Vice versa, having one fantastic take doesn't automatically elevate a user who might post something toxic in the future.

  • I'd really love to find a new radio for my car that: 1) can serve as a monitor for my back-up camera, and 2) isn't a fucking touch screen.

There are models that are one or the other, but I haven't found anything that's both. The closest I've found is a compromise - a touchscreen that also has a few tactile controls. But I don't want to have to rely on any touch screen when I'm driving. I simply don't feel compelled enough to spend $400+ for a frustrating half-measure.

  • before we enter the twilight of American democracy.

Twilight already started. Look around at the anti-woke crowd, urging us to go back to sleep. Shhh, calm now, strong daddy government will totally keep us safe. If you think you hear anything scary going on, don't worry - you're just imagining it.

  • It starts young, too. These exact same mechanisms are used and reinforced in schools, both by administration and by students.

Bullies thrive on ganging up to attack those who are "different." Ever wonder why school admin does jack shit about bullying? Part of it is because when a group of kids bullies another for not being like everyone else, they're reinforcing the administration's desire for kids to fall in line. A kid who blends in and stays quiet is favored by both groups for the same reasons - the quiet kid doesn't challenge anyone's authority.

  • Except when it hallucinates, draws from biased sources, or straight-up responds with false information.

I'd rather look through the available links myself and research the direct source things came from. AI isn't trained to look specifically for factual information. Unfortunately, a lot of people aren't trained for that, either. But we can still educate ourselves. Relying on a bot is putting one more space between the information you receive and the source that created it.

I'd rather get my information from as close to the original source as possible. Only then can I determine if the source is even worth trusting in the first place.

  • My mom got a food dehydrator so she could make treats for her dogs. It's slices of fruit or meat, nothing added, just dehydrated. My nephews saw her slicing bananas to make more of the fruit kind one day, and asked it they could have some. She got some that she'd already made out of the fridge and let them try it. They liked it, and even helped her lay out the fresh fruit on the tray to make the next batch. It was cute.

That is, until they went home and proudly announced to their mom, "Grandma let us eat dog food!"

  • The cool thing about Wikipedia is that if you have expertise in a topic and find something incorrect on it, you can edit the page to be more accurate. The trickiest part is finding and adding relevant sources. There’s a learning curve to it, but at least anyone who’s used to writing research papers should have experience with that already.

  • Isn’t .world the most populous instance? Hmm…

This is interesting. I get the impression that some admin/mods truly don’t understand how the Fediverse operates. They ban one (or a few) instance name(s), but there are so many more that they might not even recognize as Lemmy links, which get past the radar.

At the same time, there are fears here that .world could become disproportionately powerful compared to other instances, due to its high user count.

So in a way, Reddit blocking traffic to .world while permitting links to other instances can benefit us all. Smaller instances gain users, which is an important step toward balancing things out and keeping any one instance from becoming too powerful. Thanks, Reddit!

(I recognize the irony of saying this while having a .world account. I wasn’t aware of its standing in Lemmy when I made it. I am also still learning the Fediverse myself and don’t know how to transfer my account to another instance yet.)

  • You may be a leader and you may be Jewish, but I interpreted that comment to specifically mean the people in power who maintain this connection. That is, “you guys” sounds like an appeal to the Jewish leaders referenced in the article, the US leaders that support the ADL, or both.

I might be wrong, I don’t know OP or what they truly believe. If there is context I’m missing that changes the message, I will stand corrected.
