  • I remember watching the news closely during his presidency, to hear what he had to say about the Dakota Access Pipeline and ensuing protests, and there was nothing. So, some weeks back I searched to see if there was anything I missed, and I found one instance of a person asking him about it, and he gave only generic responses. Like it was new info to him. Blew me away, because to me it was the most important topic around that time along with what we were doing/going to do in Syria. I don't have a high opinion of the man, nor the system that makes people like him a figurehead.

  • It's must be like one long nightmare for Palestinians. It's akin to the Great Tribulation, and the politicians who claim to believe in such things are way too happy supporting Israel. I cannot imagine the US standing much longer, not after this and everything else this country has done to the world. It has to end.

  • I didn't know it was called Lenia, but I have seen implementations of it here and there. It's pretty cool that people have gotten it working, and I wonder what other totalistic cellular automata besides the Game of Life would look like when evaluated in a continuous manner.

The problem with making truly continuous CA is that we are using digital computers to do it, so we can only ever get an approximation of what a CCA would look like. I've seen just how big a difference 8 bit vs 16 bit values make, and I imagine that even though higher and higher bit depths would converge upon a truer model, issues will still persist. Plus, we are still stuck with using grids...

  • Not exactly about codebases, but I believe the universe operates like a cellular automaton (CA) at its most fundamental level. (Idea originally from Stephen Wolfram.)

A CA, if you don't know, is a simulation in which a cell in a grid evaluates nearby cells and returns a value based on what it finds and the rules given to it. What happens next is called 'emergent behavior', and in some ways mimics physics and even primitive life. In fact, many physics models use CA already.

What this means to me is that there is ultimately only one type of energy/matter, and that everything we can detect (quarks, photons, atoms, etc.) is made from the same 'stuff', and that nothing is truly random... it's just that we lack the tools and models to predict what happens below the smallest observable scale.

  • The movie Enter the Void. Seems to last forever.

As for interesting philosophical reading material, I quite enjoyed: the Nag Hammadi library; The Kybalion; and anything about morphogenetic resonance.

If those topics aren't interesting to you, any music is good, and any normal movie is recommended, since you'll see it from quite a different viewpoint.

Heads up to those new to DXM: do a small test dose (90mg) before jumping into a larger one, since you might have an enzyme issue that makes the experience overly intense and possibly dangerous. Take only DXM-containing products. Consult the plateaus chart online to see where you're at. Always research things beforehand

  • Psychopathy, not psychosis. It's easy to get the two disorders confused.

    From Psychology Today:

Psychopathy is a condition characterized by the absence of empathy and the blunting of other affective states. Callousness, detachment, and a lack of empathy enable psychopaths to be highly manipulative.

Psychosis occurs when an individual loses touch with reality—a break that can be terrifying to experience or to observe in a loved one. Psychosis can include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, and abnormal movements.

  • Oh, I see. For some reason I took 'life critical' to mean any program one keeps installed and 'can't do without' ;)

I think Space Engineers is on my list, and it looks like my PC just barely meets the requirements. As for compatiblity, I can always keep Windows 10 around for certain things.

I don't play anything online either. Last game I tried online was Minecraft, and I just couldn't deal with the griefers. Some asshats found a way into my area and stole/killed all my cows >:( (Or I was overbreeding and the mods removed them, idk.)

  • I don't mind learning and using the terminal. From what I hear, it can be used to automate things more easily than on Windows and I'm all for it, as long as it's not needed for everyday tasks.

I think when I eventually (soon, I hope) get my PC hooked up where I'm at I'll try either Pop!_OS or Mint.

    Thanks for the feedback~

  • That sounds promising. I've heard good things about Pop!_OS. Which game has issues, if I might ask?

I try to avoid web-based apps when I can. For instance, there is a supposedly great photo editor that's only available via web browser. I'd hate to become dependent on it and then lose access due to an internet outage, or something.

  • It's an AMD R9 380 2GB, so kind of old. (In fact, it's factory overclocked, so that might be the source of the crashes.)

I'll probably just buy a new storage drive so I don't have to worry about Linux and Windows existing on the same one. It's going to be great, having more control over the OS. I bet things will even be faster overall, due to the relative lack of bloat.

  • It seems I found it elsewhere since I'm already subscribed... (Funny seeing dbzer0 though, since I thought lemmy.world defederated from that instance a while back.)

Thanks again for the links, btw. i've already got a nice list of subbed communities going.

  • Do all distros have the same compatibility with video cards and software? I want something that'll run Blender, Krita, Gimp, etc., and support my Wacom tablet. And run my favorite games, of course. Lots of people say Mint is good for newbies jumping ship. I don't mind learning a new environment and running console commands from time-to-time.

  • I think Windows 10 will be the last version I use. As time goes on, Linux seems more and more like a viable option, and I'll be glad to have control over my PC for once. And who knows, maybe I will no longer have the mysterious freezing issue that's been plaguing me for years...

  • Even if this were considered binding I'm hardpressed to think the US would play along with it.

Is not the US breaking its own law by continuing to provide Irarael monetary and military support? The Leahy Law says we can't do that if the recipient of aid is commiting war crimes. All aid should be suspended while an impartial and independent party investigates Israel's actions in Gaza and the West Bank.
