  • Do you have a source for that? I've been digging around some looking for information but other than the national exit polls (which removed the question more than a decade ago I guess?) I can't find any credible studies on it. It would be reassuring (well, kind of...) were you right, but anecdotal evidence and all that

  • It's also possible that, so as not to compromise the structure of the (already thin) metal by drilling holes in the risers, the stair treads themselves are attached to a carrier of some sort that's then fastened around the metal structure we can see.

I can't really see this staying intact very long as is. The metal uprights are already deforming slightly while just freestanding, so my suspicion is that there's an additional structure that spreads the load across the whole assembly and which has yet to be installed. Seriously, those lower steps would just sproing and dump you on the floor scooby-doo-trapped-staircase style the first time you tried to go up them.

  • So um... what're you gonna do with the thermite?

No seriously, I used to do aluminothermic welding, trust me when I say it's an extremely frustrating substance to use. And on top of that, it is incredibly conspicuous. Unless you both know what you're doing and what you're doing can only be done by introducing a huge thermal mass (for example, screwing up a precision bearing surface on a piece of equipment. Note that you can't really cut through material with thermite without using a burnout mold), there are way better ways to accomplish the task. It's just not a great choice, and everything a theoretical citizen resistance would feasibly be doing could be done better, faster and safer (for you) with either some gasoline or bolt cutters...

  • To stretch a metaphor: Spying on friendly nations is assumed by everyone, and is a huge part of why we're still friends. If you can be sure your friends are in fact your friends, doesn't that mean your friendship will be stronger? Especially if your friends have nuclear weapons.

  • Canada doesn't want poor (let alone trans) refugees any more than any other country wants poor refugees. It's a much more progressive country than many, but "just leave" isn't any more of a realistic option for persecuted groups under Trump than it was for the same groups under Hitler.

  • People generally don't change their opinions until they're directly affected, sadly. Hopefully this one wakes a whole bunch of people up, I know among my own conservative acquaintances it'll have a huge impact if they go through with it. Pitiful that this will be a breaking point for so many, but at this point I'll take the wins I can get...

  • Have you considered that the other person here is of perfectly normal intelligence, and you're just very bad at explaining your position on an extremely sensitive subject? Seriously, I hope you're just badly fumbling this because oh boy are you presenting yourself like an asshole right now. I'm skeptical that's it, since you're clearly lashing out by insulting their intelligence (which frequently correlates) but I also understand how frustrating it can be to try and explain things and be repeatedly told it's problematic. Maybe take a breath and try this one again. Or just tell me to fuck off, settling the matter and letting us downvote you with a clear conscience

  • It wasn't the trip itself thats particularly viewed as problematic, it was the atrociously patronizing marketing surrounding it and that Katy Perry is just a generally vile person. Nobody is begrudging Amanda Nguyen or Aisha Bowe being along on this trip, they've dedicated their lives to the celebration of science and supporting the work of legitimate astronauts (and I suppose arguably so has Shatner, though he's not exactly a man of flawless character)

  • Trusting a wikipedia link to make your point for you doesn't work any better on lemmy than it did on reddit. In case anyone is curious, a couple excerpts from wikipedia

In the Internet Age, users posting on manosphere internet forums such as 4chan and subreddits addressing men's rights activism have claimed that misandry is widespread, established in preferential treatment of women, and shown by discrimination against men.
    [...]
Men's rights activists invoke the idea of misandry in warning against what they see as the advance of a female-dominated society. The idea of feminism as threatening towards men, encapsulated in the term misandry, forms a core part of the vocabulary of the manosphere and is used within the men's rights movement to counter feminist accusations of misogyny.

They aren't equivalent-but-gender-flipped terms anymore, because "misandry" has been hijacked by the incels as a dogwhistle and convenient catchall term to dismiss concerns exactly like what's in this thread. While I don't think HexesofVexes intended this, they're conflating the two terms to be equivalent in meaning which, when taken in context, just simply isn't true.

  • Yeah right now Lemmy is a niche appeal social media site with a minor technical barrier to entry, so it's basically the ideal environment for toxic users to spawn. World is getting better as more regular-human users are driven off reddit, and there's obviously blahaj and similar instances, but yeah it's pretty rough here. Lots of "Anyone who'd choose the bear over me is just an idiot, I'd never completely miss the point like a bear would" types.

  • Is it really that bad, though? Compared to spending hours fighting with 3rd party drivers or wine or etc. every time there's a change to the software in question, restarting to a different partition is pretty trivial. Configure both OSs to mirror non-sys files to network storage or a shared partition (and there's plenty of ready-made utilities for this) and it's honestly a pretty easy solution to being stuck with "iNdUsTrY sTaNdArD" software.

I get where you're coming from, I do. The only reason I'm saying this is because the difficulty in dual booting is often brought up when discussing switching, and it really discourages people that are curious about trying linux (but are still tied to the apple/M$ world) from making the switch when they're constantly told how hard it is to use both.
