  • It's such a dumb simplification and false question, what's he supposed to do? Pull out charts demonstrating that unchecked hamas bombimg canmpaigns against Isreal would be less carbon friendly?

What the person is saying is I don't care about the environment or any other issue so I'm going to disrupt you talking about anything else

I'd love to see them locked in a room with the just stop oil protestors that pour oil on the road trying to cause accidents - battle of the delusional egomaniac single issue voters.

  • Yeah same thing comes up whenever high density housing is mentioned, you're not allowed to mention how horrible it is because everyone is locked into an ideology where poor people belong in very small compressed areas because then we'll be forced to ride bikes which is going to magically solve everything

  • I swear people on here think the right to protest is some magical talisman that protects you from the consequences of your actions.

If you break other laws the right to protest doesn't somehow stop that being illegal - you cant just wear a free Palestine shirt and go shop lifting or break into someone's house.

It is about not making protesting illegal in the absence of other crimes - like for example it is in Cuba where this person didn't commit other crimes but is arrested simply for documenting.

  • Not every study has to be about everything, there's plenty of interesting things this tells us.

Lots of follow up studies too, are gen z women the same or do they all go for older guys or the same guy? Is this trend tied with sexual identity, how do men feel about it, do porn habits correlate, how does it split demographically and economically....

Doing a study on all these factors would be huge and expensive, getting a good data point to inform future study design is a vital step.

But yeah look up the paper I bet they asked more than one question and have a methodology based on sound principles trying to increase understanding of a complex subject.

  • Yeah let's keep flooding old noise into the airwaves rather than update just so you don't have to acknowledge you're getting older and the world is changing.

Go use a 14.4 baud modem if you like obsolete communication protocols so much.

  • Ha big doenvotes from the incel faction.

It's always so funny when people push these obvious self tells, like yeah you're not going to be a good match with everyone so a lot of conversations die but as soon as someone starts blaming an entire gender for not being able to hold a conversation its a pretty clear sign they're the problem.

  • Except in realityit seems he was against the elephant being killed but said electrocution would be more humane than the hanging which had happened to 'murderous mary', his opinion being something the aspca also supported.

The assholes in this story are the themepark owners that upon being unable to sell Topsy decided to kill her as a spectacle to gain publicity, A previous attempt elsewhere to electrocute an elephant had failed so they also used other measures. They poisoned her. Electrocuted her and strangled her with a steam powered winch.

They did use locally supplied power from the Edson Co but this was because it was a decade after war of the currents and Edison was the main supplier of AC to NYC, they certainly weren't trying to promote its danger. Plus he no longer owned that company, he'd sold to GE and it still used his name.

The Edison film company did film it but again no evidence the man himself was involved, they filmed short clips of specticals and news events which could be viewed in a slot machine. It's upsetting but people were a lot less caring about animals back then, it wasn't especially shocking that this happened or was recorded.

  • Yeah people are desperate to believe 'Edison evil, Tesla jesus' it's so weird. I get that it was like a cool fact online twenty years ago but there have been so many actual historical documentaries showing how complex and interesting the real story was.

Truth is neither of them invented anything from scratch, - AC generators, motors (useless), transformers, and lights were in use before Tesla even began his big invention. He was a name in a long list of people who worked together understanding the newly emerging field of electronics - if Westinghouse or Barrington had made outrageous claims to allure conspiracy theories then they might have got the Tesla treatment by thy internet instead and we'd only hear of Tesla in the science museum while they'd be regarded at saintly heros of science.

I like Tesla but there are so many interesting stories

  • I think this is a more significant point than most people want to admit, it's not just iPhones, people choose status over fairness pretty much every time - they'd rather pay more to feel better than others.

The car market, computers, clothes, food - literally everything. It's true in all the porest and richest circles even when like iphones and a lot of fashion the more expensive product is objectively worse.

It's not capitalism inventing this it's always been a thing and capitalism simply leverages it. I move in probably the least capitalist circles as an open source obsessive and dev, people choosing to share their work free so others can benefit but the mentality is there too, its in the eco obsessive communities too - I don't think it's totally universal amywhere but it's prominent everywhere.

I've come to belive that the Marxist ideals don't cover enough of what people really need, they're idealistic and somewhat how we'd want to think of ourselves but it's similar to dieting, deciding in a serious mood to eat only kale and beans feels like who we want to be but when we try and live that way we realize that we're not that person.

We need to focus on achievable steps in the right direction which allow us to feel good about the change we're making while also letting us fill our needs, even those lazy and embarrassing ones that the idealized version of of lacks.

We need to learn to understand and enjoy other forms of status but also we need to learn to reward those status symbols in others just as we reward economic status symbols even if we pretend to ourselves we dislike them. People in expensive clothes get treated better because it symbolizes the power they have to make an economic difference - even the fact iphones are feature restricted money milking machines only plays into this, it signals that you've got enough money not to worry about them adding $500 to the price for no reason or stinging you for a dozen subscriptions and this makes it seem like you're the most likely person to be able to help them if they're in trouble or give them things they xouldnt otherwise have.

Yes this is bad greedy nasty thinking and no one wants to admit it's part of them but this is how the math in our brain works. We can't help it, and when we ignore it or pretend it doesn't exist or that we can wish it away that doesn't change reality.

I don't know what the solution is, I'd like to hope we can at least shift it from being solely economic to respecting skills too, I dont know but we need to make it socially rewarding to be a benefit to society rather and make good choices.

  • But also first language information systems are a real problem in India especially with government services. These tools are gong to make it much easier to provide vital services and connect people to the appropriate services.

  • Yes but how often do you call? People like us make up like 1% of their calls, 90% come from people asking 'how do I download the Google?' or 'I saved a picture of my cat where did it go?' and 9% is people with general questions they could have found online but they didn't want to get into it.

  • I didn't know who to side with but you've switched to a deceptive argument so I'm not giving you thy benefit of thy doubt anymore.

It's very clear he's using common English usage of all to mean significant majority, pretending not to understand this and trying to win on semantics makes it seem like you're an untrustworthy orator.

  • Sure but he also monetizes videos rather than turn it off, let's say every browser by default blocks adverts and skips sponsored segments is he still going to support it?

The argument that a behavior is acceptable because only a small amount of people do it is a bad argument, if he doesn't like adverts he has the actual option to turn them off and not to accept sponsorship. His income comes from the fact most people watch the adverts so he supports and agrees with the advertising model.

Sure you can argue it's not worth the effort to stop 5% of users freebooting but when is it worth the effort? If creators can't afford to create because there's no money in it then the platform dies, so where is the line?

  • Yeah, supper annoying when i put on a Playlist while I start working clay and get those thirty min adverts with an old man pretending to have invented batteries powered by a cornflake or how he's uncovered a scheme from the inland revenue where they'll give you 164% return on your investments if you buy war bonds for the battle of trafalgar.

It's about the one time I'd consider using voice to control my computer
