  • This sounds like a very simple fix. The next time you see her in person, take all of her devices and download a different browser and set it to a different search engine if you need to (with her permission of course). Put the new browser icon in the same spot as the Chrome icon and move the Chrome icon someplace else on the home screen/desktop. Have her use it and bookmark the sites she goes to most often (or export and upload her bookmarks for her). It will take a little getting used to but it will seem like a habit in a couple of days. Of course you'll also explain why you're doing this.

  • That's the thing - I am willing to try new things, like new browsers, but I get spooked when I encounter things like this.

I, too, was using Brave's browser and search engine on my phone when I heard about their shady actions. So I stopped using them and now am pretty much just using Firefox with DDG as the default search engine and have uBlock Origin and another adblock add on. I don't even know if having two ad blockers is redundant.

I'm willing to trade some privacy for a useful free service or convenience but I don't even know how much is too much on the privacy spectrum.

  • Agreeing that it's not a seamless transition in user experience from Reddit to Lemmy/kbin. But one thing that at least the instance that I'm on (kbin.social) makes easy is subscribing to various communities (or magazines, which is what they are called on kbin):

I go to the Magazines screen in kbin.social, type.in the general topic I'm interested in (in your example, cats). The search results in kbin.social bring me all of the magazines and communities that have cat in the name, and I subscribe to them all. (Meaning, I don't have to type out the full community address.)

Yes, a lot of it will be redundant and if I don't subscribe to specific communities I may miss some stuff. But I can say that now I have a ton pf.contwct that I'm interested in my "Subscribed" feed (similar to the home feed on Reddit).

  • Reddit was too weird for most people until they ended up being in their Google search results for most topics. It will take a while but the Fediverse will eventually reach a level of popularity and mainstream utility.

  • Are you trying to move to another platform that might also get you followers/help you maintain those.followers (Threads, BlueSky). If I had a photo account, and dining post anything personal about myself, I would probably try any and all platforms. But I don't use SM like that. Does Twitter allow mentions of other platforms you're on? (When he banned mentions of Substack that got me interested in it and it led me to download the app and create an account there.)

  • I hate that he is not.paying people the severance he promised,.yet has hundreds of billions of.dollars in net.worth.

I hate that most of the people who will lose their jobs because of this guy will have their lives completely disrupted.

    He's a deadbeat and a sociopath.

  • I'm American and of the Americans I know who traveled longterm or lived abroad, or traveled for free or on a budget:

    • They were part.of a student exchange in High School and.lived in Europe.for half a year(program was competitive and free)
    • They were part of a program in college that included an annual international trip (program was free)
    • They went.to college or university abroad and would travel during breaks (had to pay for school and for the travel, but traveled on a broke student budget)
    • They were a nanny for a wealthy family in Europe
    • They taught English as a second language in countries like India, Thailand, South Korea and China, usually living there from 1.month (very short cultural.program when hey were in college) or several years (working FT in private ESL schools), which allowed for a lot of inexpensive travel.in Asia
    • They perform on cruise ships full time and visit the locations where they stop
    • They live frugally,.save a bunch of.money and vacation days, then travel to the places with the cheapest airfare and COL, also typically not during the busiest tourists times (off season or.shoulder season)
    • They go where they have friends and can crash on their couch, or travel.with friends and split the costs
    • They are "digital nomads" and work remotely while they travel
    • They are vloggers and their travel is a part of their content; they make.money on YouTube etc. (this also can include digital nomads - they may work their FT gig and.do the content creation on the side)
    • They are retirees, some relatively young (military or nonprofit/governmental pensions,.money saved in Roth IRAs or.other retirement accounts that they can tap early), traveling for.months at a time or living abroad and doing a lot of traveling from that jumping off point)

Of the above, if they have student loans that they are paying off, they usually don't travel longterm anywhere. The lifestyle requires little to no debt.

ETA: Thinking of a few more,, one already mentioned by PP:

    • They saved up summer job money and backpacked in between High School and college
    • They visited family abroad periodically throughout their childhoods over the summer
    • They work for companies that had branches in foreign countries, or for the State Dept., or for NGOs, or are in the Peace Corp
  • That link is only for Lemmy instances (e.g., Lemmy.world, Beehaw.org). I entered "Beehaw.org" into the field and it worked fine.

I think the previous poster thought the OP wanted a Lemmy instance but to have it look just like Old Reddit (which this does). If you want Reddit content without going to Reddit, maybe Libreddit works (I think that's the name of the site). Tedd.it i believe will.shut down on August 1, but you can try them.for now.

  • I asked Bard the same "don't be evil" prompt and this is the reply (they have an option to shorten the response but I didn't use it):

Google's "Don't be evil" motto was removed from the company's code of conduct in April 2018. There are a few reasons why this may have happened.
The meaning of "evil" became too ambiguous. The phrase "Don't be evil" is open to interpretation, and what one person might consider evil, another person might not. This ambiguity could have led to confusion and disagreement within the company about what the motto meant and how it should be applied.
Google's business grew and its operations became more complex. As Google grew, its business became more complex and its operations had a wider impact on the world. This made it more difficult for the company to adhere to a simple motto like "Don't be evil."
Google faced criticism for its business practices. In the years leading up to 2018, Google faced criticism for a number of its business practices, including its handling of user data, its involvement in the Chinese government's censorship program, and its work on developing autonomous weapons. This criticism may have led the company to believe that the "Don't be evil" motto was no longer an accurate reflection of its values.

It is important to note that Google has not completely abandoned the "Don't be evil" motto. The phrase is still included in the company's code of conduct, and it is still used by some Google employees and executives to describe the company's values. However, the removal of the motto from the preface of the code of conduct suggests that Google no longer sees it as the defining principle of its business.

In its place, Google has adopted a new motto: "Do the right thing." This motto is more specific and less ambiguous than "Don't be evil," and it is intended to provide guidance to Google employees as they make decisions about the company's business practices.

  • Thanks. I just tried it - I'll fact check the token later. (I gave the same prompt to ChatGBT and it gave me incorrect information, and when confronted by my next prompt, it admitted that it was incorrect.) What was neat about Bard is that I exported the result to Google Docs and it's here in my Google Drive. So if you like Google's ecosystem, you might like this.

  • Ugh. I went to Feedly after Google Reader went kaput (why did then end that, it was great). I went back to Feedly about a week ago after leaving Reddit. So now I'm on the hunt again.

I would also greatly appreciate free non-selfhosted RSS suggestions for desktop and Android phone.

  • May I introduce you to the Far Right in America? They are often keen to downplay any Russian acts of aggression. ETA: Not saying that they would fit the definition of tankies, just that you don't have to be a leftist to (overtly or tacitly) support Russia.

G.O.P.’s Far Right Seeks to Use Defense Bill to Defund Ukraine War Effort

The group’s proposals have no chance of passage, but they have further mired the military spending bill in a partisan fight and highlighted Republican divisions over the war.
