  • I've learned this the hard way. Got two nice, different Panasonics in a row only to have both fail after a relatively short time period ("relatively short" kinda varies for me since I think things that happened five years ago happened "the other day" these days). After the second failure, I just got the cheapest of the Panasonics, and it's outlasted both of the previous ones already and does just as good a job.

  • Luggage.

You don't want to be repacking your shit while late a for a flight because you're a kg over the limit and it's gonna cost an extra $100 if you don't and mistakenly rip the zipper off your carry-on. You really, really don't.

You don't have to completely break the bank either, but if you value your sanity, I wouldn't spend too much less than $200 on a carry-on/check-in pair.

  • I'm using a Leopold FC900R with blues (click-thock forever!) that I got a few years back. It's a full sized, 104 key, no RGB, no bells and whistles type deal. I got a really good deal on one (~$80 USD), but I'm in Korea where they're made, so YMMV. I honestly don't know what the back plate is made of, but it is quite heavy. 1.2 kgs (2.6 lbs) according to this place.

  • Trig

    Jump
  • I used to, but I don't often find the time these days. Trig for days. Especially given most game input is in (x,y) format from analog sticks or WASD. Gotta turn that into angles! (Not that you need much trig to turn WASD into angles.)

  • While you cook up some boxed mac and cheese on the stove, cut up some broccoli and onions or whatever appropriate veggies you have lying around, and open a can of tuna (any kind of cooked protein is fine, so fry and shred some chicken breast or ground beef if you're feeling ambitious.) When that's done, mix it together in a casserole dish, throw some cheese on top and chuck it in the oven until it turns a bit brown.

  • We adopted a crazy guy who lived in the sewers. We'd check up on him whenever we were back in town. Ended up giving him a neat magical item that let him cast prestidigitation a few times a day or something, and some other amenities hoping he'd clean up his act. We never finished the campaign, but I like to think he got it together.

  • Elden Ring and Stardew Valley ate a decent chunk of 2023 for me. And are both amazing games in their own right. Totally different, though.

I didn't play anything really bad this past year, but I did bounce off Crosscode pretty hard after expecting to love it given I'm a sucker for early JRPGs and the 8 and 16 bit eras in general. It's a well made game, just overlong and featuring some tedious and frustrating mechanics.
