  • MAGA Revolt

We've been here before. The Wingnut Wurlitzer just needs a bit more time to spin up and explain why this is all Killary Killington's fault.

By 2026, they'll all be back in line again.

  • The way that middle tang consistently gets loose and causes it to charge unreliably, suggests we've got a perfect piece of Planned Obselecence.

  • We had a good five or ten minutes somewhere in 1945. Also, gotta admit that Moon Landing was cool.

Everything else I could probably live without.

  • We need a strong USA.

Glances at the last 40 years of US history

    Do we?

  • Now, in fairness, if I was driving 90-120m, I’d kill myself. But at least I’d do so listening to the Wheel of Time audiobook.

I've never had trouble listening to audiobooks on the train (assuming I knew the route well enough).

And on those rare occasions I get dragged out of my home wearing a suit, I do so belligerently. I’m done showing up 20-30m early, I get there when I get there. And I gotta leave early now too.

    Which is fine.

But I've found a lot of merit in the personal collaborations with coworkers that only really happen in an office setting. I'm in office hybrid - three days a week - and I mentor new hires, grab lunch with senior managers, get tipped off on problems from people I pass in the hallway, and occasionally just shoot the shit with people I'd never otherwise know existed if I wasn't in the building.

I value my Work from Home, but also get a lot of mileage from a communal office.

  • Hamas Says

Always telling when they refuse to point to the leadership they are ostensibly dealing with in between rounds of mass extermination.

Netanyahu has made it a national policy of targeting all former members of the Palestinian government, both in Gaza and the West Bank. His IDF kills militants and diplomats alike. They find family members and murder them, too. They gun down whole neighborhoods on the suspicion a Hamas insurgent might be inside. They fill their prisons with suspects and torture Gazans to death, extracting a few confessions out along the way. Then they kick off wars with neighboring Lebanon and Syria, they bomb their ostensible allies in Jordan and Egypt, and they even send bombers deep into Iran.

Hell, they are shooting their own Oct 7th hostages. Who is left to sign a "surrender" agreement on these terms? Anyone waving a white flag is bombed into the pavement.

Might as well ask for Anne Frank's surrender as anyone in Gaza.

  • The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke

The authors present quantitative data to demonstrate how American middle-class families have been left in a precarious financial position by increases in fixed living expenses, increased medical expenses, escalating real estate prices, lower employment security, and the relaxation of credit regulation.

The result has been a reshaping of the American labor force, such that many families now rely on having two incomes in order to meet their expenses. This situation represents a greater level of financial risk than that faced by single-income households: the inability of either adult to work, even temporarily, may result in loss of employment, and concomitant loss of medical coverage and the ability to pay bills. This may lead to bankruptcy or being forced to move somewhere less expensive, with associated decreases in educational quality and economic opportunity

Among the expenses driving the two-income trap are child care, housing in areas with good schools, and college tuition. Warren and Tyagi conclude that having children is the "single best predictor" that a woman will go bankrupt

Warren and Tyagi call stay-at-home mothers of past generations "the most important part of the safety net", as the non-working mother could step in to earn extra income or care for sick family members when needed. However, Warren and Tyagi dismiss the idea of return to stay-at-home parents, and instead propose policies to offset the loss of this form of insurance.

Warren and Tyagi attempt to overturn the "overconsumption myth" that Americans' financial instabilities are the result of frivolous spending – they note, for instance, that families are spending less on clothing, food (including meals out), and large appliances, when adjusted for inflation, than a generation prior.

  • Been reading about Trump's "cognitive decline" since 2017. For some reason, we need to believe his brain is broken in order to explain away his miserable attitude and sadistic policies.

No guys, that's just a normal American billionaire thinking and talking exactly like they all do.

  • Genuinely a testament to the American Mind that conservatives managed to convince people Hillary Clinton had Jeffery Epstein murdered while Donald Trump was the sitting President.

  • Significantly more productive than anyone forced to commute by car.

  • Normal people either can’t afford these devices or don’t have time for all the hassle

Had a friend who was getting by on $2k/mo and got herself a $1400 top of the line iPhone, because her carrier gave her a reduction in her monthly payment plan (for an obscene amount of debt and locked-in service on the back end). Her brother jail-broke it for her and did the normal "cleaning off all the bloatware" due-diligence.

This is just something we all put up with in the modern day. "Normal people" have a harder time navigating the bullshit, but its a lake we all have to paddle through.

  • Reminds me of getting a notice in Middle School, decades ago, about how a pager was considered "drug paraphernalia"

There was also a big Bloomberg-Era push by the NYPD to arrest any woman carrying condoms on her person, on the grounds that a woman carrying a condom must be a sex worker.

  • What gets me is that we've already had an orgy of evidence regarding Epstein and his various partnerships.

And yet the various administrative and state DOJs - from Bush in '05 to Obama to Trump to Biden to Trump again to the Florida and NY and even the fucking Virgin Islands - had more than enough to start making sweeping indictments and arrests. And yet, nobody seems interested in pulling the trigger (or, when someone does, they're fired).

Everyone associated with Epstein - left, right, and center (excepting Gislane Maxwell) - is walking away scott free.

And yet we keep hearing about "The Hidden Files" that someone or other is keeping secret. The extra double-plus super dooper extra special evidence that can finally start indicting people. As though the witness testimonies and flight logs and transfer payments and real estate deals and extensive misuse of Les Wexner's Victoria Secret company resources just aren't enough to press charges on anyone.

You should have entire cell blocks full of people convicted for human trafficking and serial sexual assault based on any given litany of newspaper headlines. But here we are, still just waiting on the "Real" information to be released at last.

  • Broadly speaking? For the same reason every other state does. Continental unity opens up trade and travel, exploits economies of scale, and simplifies the legal system for interstate business and for civil rights purposes.

Specifically? Because federal coordination helps manage natural disasters (like wildfires) and centralize big programs life Medicare/SS and secures national defense (which California profits from handsomely).

  • You’re not thinking enough like a grifter

I mean, its obviously a shit post. But I imagine spending a whole day doing fake interviews - 50 a day, five days a week, for a month - to make around $6k gross, and then tell yourself you can scale this up passively.

  • There's no compelling reason why a state a big and wealthy as Texas can't afford to manage natural disasters on this scale.

Their state leadership simply chooses not to do so. And the state media saturated the airwaves with "Nothing to be done, government would only make things worse" which... given the leadership of the state, isn't even an unfair critique.

  • That’s all red states.

From California to Mississippi, the anti-tax era got everybody. Now states don't have domestic revenue to pay for shit, so they have to go through the Feds for everything.

Ironic, in a way, since the core of anti-tax Republicanism was supposed to be about shrinking the size of government. But here we are, beholden to whichever idiot or asshole happens to be running the executive branch at a given moment
