  • That is scary but also Israel is a Christo-fascist white colonial settler project to establish a base of operations and influence in the strategically important middle east.

It may not be an individual citizen's responsibility, just like a Canadian citizen isn't responsible for the 60s Scoop, or an Americans for Manifest Destiny. But no progress can ever be made unless those of us who are settlers acknowledge the sins of the past, and how we perpetuate them today.

  • I noticed exactly this since starting WFH. Even if I suffer a bout of insomnia -- where I get maybe 3 hours of sleep -- just being able to sleep in to 0800 makes it so much more tolerable.

It goes from feeling tormented to just feeling rough around the edges.

God but I remember fighting to keep my eyes open at school and at work back then.

  • Also a tertiary function of schools is to act publically funded daycare. Moving the handoff later in the morning means that parents would also need to start work later, or take on fewer hours.

Not saying that wouldn't be a good thing, but there are knock-on effects that go beyond the clout of a school to tackle.

  • Fair AAA will always have a core demo who don't care as long as their addiction is fed, but I think the fuss we raise should at least keep it out of the majority of games, and make people implementing it feel kind of scummy, so that's something.

Like MTX are relegated to a very specific "type" of game which is instantly identifiable, and not that well regarded compared to more, uh, pure (?) games.

Summed up: ads and dark patterns will always work on a certain segment of the population, but they don't necessarily get to be seen as normal or cool.

  • Oh hi, sour. Didn't notice it was you.

Just do your best. Search about what you care about and click and read around the internet. ethicalconsumer.org looks like a decent reference for brands. And here's the first result for a search for "ethical alternatives to amazon."

Yeah some brands or places will disappoint you, but you live and learn and continue. I just pretend it's the 90s. It's not like I was starving, or couldn't find games to play, or movies to watch back then. I just couldn't press a button have the world brought to my door. It was fine. And there were fewer billionaires.

PS my links are geared to what I'm interested in. YMMV, so like maybe the eco stuff takes a backseat to the ethical treatment of workers for you, and that's cool

  • I kinda wish it would actually be disruptive in a more positive way. But you're right: most of us only saw a fraction of a fraction of a real benefit from the increased efficiency of automation.

So it's unlikely that any new labour saving technology will change the lot of your average person, except as a consumer.
