  • This word has lost all meaning if you're applying it to LibertyHub. The rules (until the new head mod "simplified and clarified" them very recently) explicitly called out Maoist apologia as being against the community guidelines.

  • LibertyHub is an anarchist space with very heavy handed moderation and specific rules intended to promote discussion without the need to explain basic concepts of anarchism constantly. Posting neoliberal or imperialist appologetic viewpoints would get you banned on LibertyHub, so lots of people have stayed mad at their (until very recently) head mod.

  • I frequent LibertyHub and LinkOpensChest didn't convince me of shit. I'm a whole person with very strongly held and well developed political beliefs. Just because you don't agree with those beliefs doesn't mean I'm a brainwashed slave resolved to stripping your rights and installing a fascist dictator.

  • Criticizing Biden is not the same as advocating against voting. This position is something that LOC has had to defend himself on many times, and one that many don't seem to grasp. If I'm not mistaken, LOC at one point even said he'd vote for Biden when the time came. I don't think any person should have to broadcast their voting plans explicitly to avoid being the target of controversy, but here we are.

It takes a nuanced position to criticize the current establishment for being (at best) complicit in genocide while still recognizing the very real danger of fascism. Many people just see the memes bashing Biden and assume no nuance behind it.

  • I haven't chimed in any of the times that LibertyHub and LinkOpensChest.wav have been brought up here in a controversial light.

That said, I have REALLY enjoyed the LibertyHub community for not making me constantly feel disenfranchised or defensive about my political views. The heavy handed moderation style has made it a really great community for me to discuss things I care about without needing to constantly refute whataboutisms and general lib shit.

That type of community isn't for everyone, and that's by design. We don't need everyone to feel welcome in every community. LibertyHub is explicitly for like-minded leftists that don't want to put up with authoritarian or capitalist sympathizers. It needs to be heavily moderated to be that kind of community.

I'm not even the type of person to block communities or users that I disagree with. I just want to have one good bastion of Lemmy where I don't feel the need to explain or argue about why inexcusable things are inexcusable.

LibertyHub under LinkOpensChest.wav's moderation has been great for that.

I hope the general moderation style doesn't change because of this.

  • IPT admins will ban literally anyone for literally any reason, then tell you they'll reinstate your account if you donate. This is their business model and they've been doing it for many many years. Aside from predatory donation fishing, there's a ton of very low quality content on IPT. The kind of stuff that would be banned on any respectable private tracker.

  • GPLs "restrictions" are freedom preserving though. It only restricts developers from keeping dirivitive code proprietary. In order to violate the GPL you'd have to choose to use GPL code and then choose not to release your modified versions of it under a similar copyleft license. It may seem counterintuitive, but having those restrictions results in more software freedom overall - similar to the paradox of intolerance.

I'm not saying MIT or so called permissive licenses are bad, but the permissive/restrictive language is just as loaded as the OPs suggestions. Both styles are needed, but copyleft licenses are better at promoting software freedom.

Edit: I do agree with you that LGPL serves an important role in promoting free/libre software where it would otherwise would never be used.

  • It's not just about the content posted by individuals though. The community and relationships built on a centralized platform are also at risk to a much greater degree than they would be on federated social media.

  • I've been using Librera FD. Not sure if it meets all of your needs, but it can be integrated with a Calibre server at least to grab your books from another machine. I haven't bothered to see if it will sync what page you're on though.

  • Well since nobody can name a tracker with any AV1 content, I will for anyone finding this post in the future.

As mentioned in the OP, LST.gg has an uploader, KIMJI, who encodes western cartoons, TV, and movies in 1080p AV1. I personally love the quality and file size of his encodes. There's some other AV1 content there as well. Several WhiskeyJack encodes have been uploaded, although I don't know where they originate.

I really wish I knew where to find anime in AV1 still.

  • Yea I've heard that grain synthesis can be tough to get right with AV1. I've seen people (that know much more than me) talk about ways to make it better though.

I think Av1an gets better results.

I do think that's why people like it more for cartoons and anime.
