  • The issue is in your software that displays the capacity (most likely windows).

You bought 2 TB SSD. You got 2 TB SSD. This is equivalent to 1.8 TiB (think of it like yards and meter). Windows shows you the capacity in TiB, but writes TB next to it.

Say you buy a 2.18 yard stick. You get a 2.2 yard stick, which is equivalent to 2 meter. Windows will tell you it's 2 yards long. Why? I don't know.

  • Brexit, COVID, Russian oil

Are you seriously thinking that two years of politics can fully negate such events? It doesn't matter what your ideal is in the short term, the national economy moves slowly and in tune to the global economic situation.

  • Good point! Within a few weeks billions of animals would die. Chicken, pigs, cows, cats and dogs.

We definitely need to clarify what "good for the planet" means if we want to decide on the best answer.

  • Or is it? Emoji designs can vary wildly between devices. Most notably the gun emoji, which is (was?) Either depicting a water gun, or a real gun, depending on the device.

(In this case you're correct though, it is in fact a tortoise on every device listed here. But that emoji is named turtle!)

  • No offense, but that sounds a lot like apple and Microsoft arguing against freedom of the user.

"Installing an app from outside the app store could introduce a security vulnerability"

"We must have edge installed at all times to provide a good user experience. Replacing such a central part of the operating system could weaken the security of the device"

  • Half the time the hard drive wouldn’t even spin down, which sure is nice when you’re planning to be jostling it around in a bag for a couple hours.

I'm pretty sure this is what trashed my first laptop. Thankfully I didn't have a lot of information on there yet and was able to replace the hard drive. But absolutely ridiculous that this passed quality control.

  • Wow, GitHub is not handling that RTL text well. (Or FF on Android is to blame, can't compare at the moment)

English is not my first language and I have recently thought a lot about the impact of language in other fields. Programming is one, but to be fair the number of keywords is very limited and not too hard to learn. We had programming in school and while we already had English as well, I don't think it's a hard requirement.

Science is also very heavily impacted. The primary language is English, so if you are good at physics and suck at language learning - well tough luck because you can't do science without knowing English first. The number of people who's scientific progress and subsequent beneficial impact on the world is stunted, just because they did not learn English...

Your programming language will probably not take off, but I like the idea behind it.

  • It's a good energy source in principle and Germany definitely should have let their reactors run longer, but it's just too damn expensive to build new ones. I'm not aware of any serious private installations of nuclear that are being built right now. One small modular reactor company in the US recently announced they will need twice as much money as previous estimated to build one.

Meanwhile, a ton of people and companies are building solar and wind everywhere.

  • The street design may be a massive problem, indeed. And I welcome any change towards more reasonable street design and more public transport. This part of the high way system seems to be rather busy - perfect for a high speed train connection.

But that's not what the article criticizes and this misdirection is exactly what I find problematic about the article. Until better roads are designed "just break the law" doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

  • If this happens it will be a scandal. The article only showed cases of:

“Yeah, I clocked you going 20 over”
“I' did, but will still fight the ticket in court”
“Take it up with the judge”

“You were going 20 over, pay at the desk”
“All right, I actually did driver too fast. But it's not fair!!!”
“Alright, go pay at the desk”

So I'll wait until someone can actually show that evidence is faked and people are sentenced without due process, violating the principle of "innocent until proven guilty". Because what the article showed were a lot of people who broke traffic laws, but none who were bribed or who sentenced people to fines without evidence.
