  • So what should I assume? that' i'm going to get cancer in 5 years and therefore spend everything i have now so i can start living paycheck to paycheck? on what? hookers and blow? travel? stupid shit that will give me a few moments/days of happiness now so i can live in poverty in my old age?

life is about choices. make your own. but don't expect them to not have predictable consequences and get mad that those consequences happen. I made mine. and i do very much begrudge bitter people who made poor choices who blame others for making good ones that benefit them life-long.

all i see in these articles is wealthy folks whining because they have no self-respect and no self-control and want to blame other folks for it rather than taking charge of their lives. but hey, i'm a 'privileged' asshole who has had to deal with early parental death and my own serious medical issues that made me realize nobody is bailing me out of my own shit in life other than myself.

  • there is also more diverse content than the crap that was on here six months ago.

when 50% of the frontpage is linux memes... you're not going to gain the interest of most new users. now it seems to be down to about 20%

  • my sister has a dog chiropractor. she takes her dog two every other month for $50.

dog was having issues with certain sitting positions and randomly yelping in pain. vet didn't do anything, but the chiropractor does something and the dog no longer has pain and isn't yelping anymore.

it's bullshit, but it's bullshit that works for some people. just like lonely depressed people stop being so once they find god or some other 'purpose' in their lives. and it doesn't work for others.

  • Cool, I know several people and a dog or two who use chiropractic services. To them it's like getting an oil change in their car or taking the car in when the brakes squeal for a brake job.

Most folks don't give a fuck how shit works or where it's 'real' or not. They just want the annoying thing to go away and find someone who makes it go away.

  • fwiw i like reading long ass comments. usually there is something useful or insightful in there.

way more than i like reading 'ok boomer' comments.

but totally get that it doesn't make a difference and the vast majority of the replies will be of the 'ok boomer' or 'u suck' variety.

  • it is and it isn't.

it works for some things for some people, but it has no consistent or replicable results across things and patients, so it isn't scientific.

it's more like mental health therapy. therapy works for some folks in some circumstances with certain therapists... but again it isn't explicable. there is no general set of emotional therapeutic principles that will work for everyone.

and for many folks this type of stuff is a placebo effect. we all know someone who goes to therapy... but it never fixes their problems... but it convinces them that they are 'fixing it'. just like person you know who went gluten free who 'no longer gets headaches'.

compare that to drug where the entire point of a drugs/medical procedures where the entire point is reproducibility. a certain drug is supposed to cure a certain problem for all folks that have that problem.

I experienced an injury and literally couldn’t walk for 3 months. Three doctors kept ignoring my pain and thought I was exaggerating. They kept treating me like a drug-seeker and I couldn’t afford more visits due to be uninsured & now unable to work. They also would not refer me to a physio/physical therapist without more appointments and several expensive tests.

  • amen. i feel like there used to be a barrier. now people get up in my face for drinking a diet coke, because it's a 'political act' because trump drinks diet coke, so therefore i must support trump.

    It's insanity.

  • same. you could disagree and joke about it. now it's all demonization, labels, etc.

i feel like you could share an experience/thought and get interesting responses... now it's just people trying to pigeonhole you and decide if you are 'on their side' or not. you could make a joke about a bad date and people would be like 'haha same' now it's 'why do you hate x', 'clearly you are mentally ill', 'you are clearly evil'. very little discussion... just judgement and hate.

Am seriously considering founding a not-for-profit to provide an ad free / spam free / bot free basic community. Would cost a dollar or two a month. Chief differences to the lemmy would be one account per person via proof of identity signup (I think this would improve behaviour and discourage spam), a single authority to tackle voting abuse and other things useful to be not federated.

  • yeah lemmy definite feels like that. full of crazies who won't relent until you tell them they are right and you are wrong and you are horrible evil person for disagreeing with them over something like bicycle lanes.

but there are some middle ground folks, thankfully.

  • i'm saying i have limited resources and that i'm not going to waste my time listening to shitty arguements from idiots. that's what i'm saying.

i'm not going to listen to some lemmy leftist spout how UBI will solve all problems in the world. I am going to listen to a professional economist who has studied the issue and done studies on it talk about it's benefits, limits, and possible negatives, however.

let's not even touch the irony of some leftist idiot demanding i listen to their nonsense, while they 100% refuse to listen to a MAGA person. because to both varieties of idiot 'horrible person' is anyone who disagrees with them and their respective delusional ideologies.
