If I had a penny for every time I had to deal with a project putting something I need behind this messy walled garden...

For those having trouble filtering to a specific channel:
In the past I would get full server (or multi-server) search. Its not happening now, but how I got it to focus:
Click inside the message input box like you are typing a message, then hit Ctrl+F. That would send me to the search box with "in #channel-name" to filter for only said channel.
They wouldn't claim the Philippines without a war.
But the Chinese government is trying to claim territorial waters, and their aggression toward all their neighbors is exactly why the Philippines have decided to work with the US and open new bases.
They may not claim it, but they are definitely the aggressor in the territory, and most of their neighbors do not view the Chinese government as 'the good guys'; that's not to say they view the US as 'the good guys' either, simply as the one that isn't actively aggressive and could assist in their defense.
Yeah, basically you're a millennial if you're currently in your 30's. If you're within a few years of that age, you may technically be a millennial, or even if not, you may still consider yourself a millennial, and that is fine. Generations are gradients, there is no firm start, or end, and as stated, is more about generalized experiences of your age group.
If you are 25 and want to call yourself a millennial, that's fine, if you want to call yourself a gen z/zoomer, that's fine too.
Unless all countries come together, the idea of a 'world police' by any number of select countries is silly.
One nation being the 'world police' is even crazier.
We rely on coalitions nowadays to do much (Iraq, Haiti, Yemen, ....maybe Yemen again soon..., etc).
Coalitions are better than a single nation, but should really be an organization independent of any nations, that people trust; in the modern world, ideally would be the UN, which has peacekeeping forces, but I don't know if the trust is currently there with the UN, and a number of 'bad actors', namely because the UN doesn't serve that purpose, it is supposed to be a dialog between nations, not a unifying power, or protector/military force.
The good news on the US front, is for many coalitions to step in, the US is trying to take a back-seat, and have other nations lead them. Not that those other nations don't have concerns. I'm not up to date on it, but I believe Kenya was being sought to lead the coalition to Haiti to restore peace and order, but I believe there were concerns about the history of Kenyan police treatment in past coalitions. Still, the US should not be the one in-charge of world policing, though that is not to say they shouldn't be involved in any such action, just they are a piece of the puzzle, not the solution in and of itself.
I'm rambling too much. I think it's time for me to get off Lemmy for the day. Peace out.
"They'll be surrounded by very angry nations who will want them to disappear"
That is a pre-existing condition to Oct 7th. It is why they will continue to be supplied with weapons for defensive purposes, even if reduced on the offensive front.
No government wants Israel to not have traditional defenses. They are a potential nuclear threat.
Israel is estimated as of a few years ago to have about 1/3rd the amount of nuclear weapons of China. Now it is only about 1/5th, but that is only because China is rapidly building a nuclear arsenal; pre-covid they had about 300-350 nukes, 2 years ago they had 400, now China is up to 500. Estimated to have 1500 nukes in ~10 years.
I'm not trying to talk about China, more put on the scale that their tiny country has a massive nuclear capability in comparison to such a large country as China in modern times. In an existential threat, I wouldn't be surprised about them using them, as they are the only country in that area of the world potentially with a nuclear arsenal.
This is more informational for those that do not know that Israel is considered a nuclear power:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_states_with_nuclear_weapons
It's obvious, and either many congressmen are an agent of a foreign power, or are truly dumb enough to not realize the unspoken obviousness of this simple fact.
Prefix: I ended up ranting/venting a bit... our government is so frustrating at times:
From a US perspective, it is more a time for other countries to step up in this regard (as they have been), as while continued funding and support from the US will happen, it may be a long time from the US (maybe even 2 to 4 years if this election cycle doesn't oust/block some of these nutjobs that are either beholden to outside powers, or don't understand anything outside our own borders).
I'll take this time to say what many keep unspoken, because Ukrainians have the balls to actually voice it to the world:
No offense to Ukrainians, I want them to win, but even a loss in Ukraine after a sustained long drawn out battle, is of benefit to any country Russia considers an adversary, a place to oppress, or a country were attractive resources. Ukraine should be supported in their opposition to this invasion for as many years as it takes, no matter what. Twenty years, fifty years, however long; there should be no metric of 'it's been 2 years, and Ukraine hasn't won; are they just wasting our money?'. That is just a dumb concept.
I'm not even going to read the article; Ukraine is no where near being able to join NATO anyways.
Hungary and Turkey have shown that just signing off on NATO membership for the sake of your own people and country's safety is a dumb idea; why do that when you can block it and get concessions of some kind out of it. Reward bad behavior and all that.
If Ukraine 'wins' the war, has peace, and meets requirements for joining NATO, we can look at the idea then, but until then, there is just no way Ukraine is going to join NATO anyways. Even if we expedited all the pre-work for that time, and the time came, several countries are going to block it.
US: At home 100% sit; out and about, 100% stand.
If it's not my home toilet, I'm not even going to sit to shit. Lift the seat, put down a layer of protective toilet paper to prevent splash landings, aim, and squat. If they have very clean toilets, like someone's home, I'll make an exception, or a clean public restroom that stocks seat liners, I may use them.
TBH, that's a method of last resort though. If I can wait until I get home, I do. Nice, clean, comfy, got a fancy TOTO bidet; just a better experience.
I think this is a great time for remaining Reddit users to do a 3 month Reddit detox.
Until recent times, I've always thought a govt job was a good thing to have.
Still is, but the constant threat of government shutdowns, in the US at least, as of late, make me feel you need to live below your means and keep a decent chunk of 3 to 6 months pay, because you could suddenly be without pay for a good chunk of time because some idiots think they score political points, or will get their way, by hurting citizens.
This of course refers mostly to salaried workers, as, at least in the us, hourly gets overtime pay at 1.5x normal pay. Up to an extent, many workers appreciate the extra pay.
Not always though, as even then, some companies want lower workforce, and will work them half to death.
Hundreds to thousands of nukes, mostly yes. one to tens of, not so much. People don't want nukes to be used, but having a supply of 20 nukes or so would not get the world to let you do whatever you wanted.
And at a certain point, even the hundreds to thousands may still lead to war, if pressing too hard.
Same, IANAL, but of all the things I see wrong with this specific judge, particularly in being involved in any Trump and/or political case, considering the blatant bias shown in past cases that a non-partisan judge would not make, I don't see, or get why this would be a particularly big deal.
I get knowing in advance what the defense will be arguing helps prepares, but I feel if something unexpected is argued, and requires more research, a request to continue the trial on another date should be submitted.
In this case, permitting such a delay would be to Trumps benefit, and it would be best to be prepared for any such strategy, and not need to submit any such delaying requests.
It'd be great for the DOJ if they could get the judge to disallow arguing distracting, time wasting, unrelated strategies, but this particular judge is such Trump groupie I doubt that would happen.
But... it's a Non-commercial Attribution license. /s/ns
I'm joking, but on a more serious note for those that don't know, not all Creative Commons licenses allow you to monetize, and be sure to actually read which version of license is used if you plan to use a CC work for anything other than personal use.
I'm just going to go by the provided graphic.... Dec 30th was already a long time ago in COVID terms. It was already spiking leading into and after Thanksgiving. Now weeks after Christmas, it should begin receding again. This is "normal" (now).
I'm not disagreeing with the article, more that it seems a bit late. With Flu and RSV in the mix, not like precautions shouldn't be taken; I have worn a mask every time I'm at work or in public since March 2020, that's just my new normal.
I appreciate news sources are finally picking up on it, I just wish they'd done it more going into the holiday season.
I get that there are a lot of novel are cool distros out there, but I just stick with Debian (or one of the other well known distros that have been around for decades).
I do it because from a security standpoint, they have my trust. Maybe in 10-20 years with a good reputation and history, but it's not there.
I have not kept up on antibiotic resistance research, or phages in recent years.
I do recall a number of years ago, I believe in the US, someone scooping up pond and garden soil samples looking for new phages.
A quick search though, does show work on "phagemids"; the following article does mention that phages can cause harm to the human host by releasing harmful toxins in the bacteria when cell lysis is performed (potentially causing sepsis, or death), as well as bacteria do also develop resistance to phages over time.
https://news.mit.edu/2015/engineered-particles-kill-harmful-bacteria-0625
They will, but there is also the chance that in gaining that new resistance, they may give up a different resistance, or become less lethal.
That's the hopeful side of things; unfortunately, it is not uncommon for bacteria to develop resistance to a full combination of antibiotics over time, but I can be hopeful.
The infrastructure will come. Beside the Infrastructure bill including funds to assist in developing nationwide charging networks:
A charging connector for all the major manufacturers to use has finally been settled on; it happens to be Tesla's connector (now called the North American Charging Standard (NACS). They had a long while back offered all manufacturers to use it for free (still Tesla design property), but no major manufacturers took the bait as it may have terms attached; Tesla finally truly released it recently and it is now a standard: https://www.sae.org/standards/content/j3400_202312/
Tesla is opening up their charging stations to all (probably because of the above). For new cars, if you see one of those Tesla stations everywhere, like behind a target, or the side of some remote seeming parking lot, you will finally be able to use them.
Personally, I'm waiting for the prices to be more reasonable, and for solid state batteries (the safety and energy density/range to improve).
I project I keep up on uses Discord for chat, help, and announcements, but....
They maintain a full website for documentation, and use github for bug reports, issue tracking, project discussion, other project management.
I like discord being a part of the community, but I can cant imagine people making it the project management, or documentation tool.
I get people's argument for results not coming up from the #help discord channel when searching Google, but I'm fine with how active the help channel is, and how searchable discord is in this case.
