  • Lol, we aren't going to be mining anything. Rare earth minerals aren't rare because they're only located in isolated places, they're rare because they are only present in small amounts when mining other materials.

The hard part is the refining of rare earth minerals because it requires large investments in refineries to separate the materials and consolidate them. Infrastructure that Ukraine or America haven't invested in.

The minerals deal is just something that trump can point to as a "win" when in reality it's not worth anything. Just like everything this administration does, it's nothing but smoke and mirrors.

  • Yeap, same thing with "find my dream house" shows in America. I think the major difference is that instead of the people being in their 40s, it's usually people in their 20's. The source of the funding is ultimately the same, rich parents. The likely difference is between trust fund kids in the US and just people whose parents have finally taken their much awaited dirt naps in the UK.

I think rich parents are basically a prerequisite to owning a home for anyone under 40 nowadays. I'm one of the only people in my friend group of people in their late 30s who owns a home, and that was due to what I consider a minor miracle.

I was lucky and bought an abandoned house from the bank for 30k after the last recession, and that was only possible because I got a loan I probably shouldn't have qualified for through USAA. So, still a bit of nepotism, but because my dad was in the service, not because he was wealthy.

  • I build and fit orthotics and prosthetics.....this is mainly just a marketing gimmick. The myoelectric sensors that feed the data to the terminal device are built into the socket of the prosthetic. There's no real reason to wear the socket without the hand, and you can't operate the hand without the socket.

The hard connections from the end of the socket and the hand are very durable, and they typically don't really have any issues with wear. I don't think fidelity is a big issue because there's not a ton of information being transferred, the myoelectric sensors haven't really changed a bunch in the last 40 years and the amount of information being sent is minimal.

The biggest downside I foresee is that if you had different terminal devices, you're probably going to have to pair them to the socket whenever you want to switch. When the traditional hard connection is just plug and play. That and you are just adding extra things to break in devices that are built to take a beating.

  • I mean, this has basically been a constant since the advent of capitalism. There's a reason why a "Company" has things like a "Chief Executive Officer", some of the very first corporations were literally mercenary groups who organized their hierarchical structures off of the military.

Kinda why I think an-caps and libertarians are idiotic. Like how do you think corporations aren't capable of invalidating your rights? They're literally structured from militaristic organizations.....

  • And we are unfortunately vulnerable to regression. It's sad to think that if Mr Rogers was around today his show would probably be attached to an executive order to have his funding cut.

I don't know if a similar show would be influential in today's media market. Not just because it would be considered "woke" by half the population, but because the content would be like watching paint dry for a lot of kids.

I think a big part of learning empathy is wrapped up in learning how to be patient, and how to appreciate someone's company enough to allot them your time and attention. I just don't think people value patience very much anymore and wonder if our media reflects that or it's vice versa.

  • I hope the only thing this leads to is a more engaging border guard dance routine this year. Hopefully when independence day comes the stomps will be louder, the colors will be prouder, and everyone will get to dress like fancy birds.

  • My hospital doesn't really have very many water fountains. I think there may be one near the public restrooms on the main floors, but I think that's it. We have a water cooler in my clinic's break room, but no water fountains near the cafeteria.

I work for a state run hospital in one of the poorer states in the nation. We don't have a lot of amenities.... And unfortunately not a lot of people drink water here.

  • Yeah, we had two of these replace the old school style drink stations at the hospital I work at. They had to bring back one of the old machines because the new machines were causing so much congestion in the cafeteria. Pretty sure the hardware in these predate blackberrys, they take forever to recognize any input from the screen.

Plus if you are just trying to get water, it gets slightly contaminated from whatever beverage the last person got. Especially if it's blue powerade for some reason.

  • The lady doth protest too much...... I'm calling it now, some psychiatrist tried to diagnose Rfk Jr with autism and he lost his fucking shit about it. I mean the dudes been obsessed with dead animals since he was a child always been known as "eccentric".

  • Welcome to government brought to you by fascism, chaos is how they consolidate power. You create enough chaos to exhaust and scare people, blaming the chaos on a scapegoat. You then say, well I could totally get rid of all this chaos if you give me the power to do so. The courts, and the legislators are obviously not equipped to stop this mess, we just need one person with supreme power to cut through the bureaucracy.....

  • Buying the dip does not mean to purchase stock anytime number goes down. It means buy when you think something other than market forces are affecting a stock that you believe will make a quick recovery.

We are not in dip territory, we are in recession territory. An old saying is don't try and catch a falling knife. It's better to let it hit the floor before picking it back up, and we're still a ways from hitting the floor.

  • Well, I mean he had an entire security detail deputized by the US Marshalls....so it's not like he's just walking out in the open. The guy surrounds himself with sycophants and other billionaires, it's the only way to completely isolate yourself from reality.

I don't think he's really made an actual public appearance since being booed on stage at that chapel show, and that was by people going to see an unfunny transphobe.

  • Nah, it's just a rumor started most likely by Musk himself. Pretty sure it was a ploy to halt the Tesla stock sell offs. It started around the same time another rumor that the Tesla board was going to ask him to step down.

It's the same trick trump was doing his last term, lie to publishers and then accuse them of not being trustworthy for printing unsubstantiated rumors.

  • In my lab we have two "identical" industrial sewing machines, but we pretty much only ever use one of them. Bobbi is a well tempered and polite machine, and the unarmed one likes to break threads and throw broken needles at you.

  • Signal itself is not vulnerable. This article needs to correct itself. Signal is only vulnerable if the DEVICE THAT USES IT is compromised.

I think the description of vulnerability is subjective in this case. It could be that signal is inherently more vulnerable than official channels, as Signal is a private corporation that has no motivation to disclose any failures in their security.

I don't think the article is trying to blame Signal in any way, it's just not the proper communication channel and thus utilizing it is an inherent vulnerability no matter how secure their encryption may be.

  • Martin Luther King Jr and Malcom X knew that voting was not the only tool to fight oppression and were killed for it

Are you equating your criticisms to MLK and Malcolm X's accomplishments?

been time to march to the white house again and has been for hot minute

And what exactly does your criticism have to do with marching on the fascist led white house?

Again my rebuttal to your criticism is that you didn't offer anything but criticism to the only resistance option we currently have going for us. Criticism does not equal political organizing....

At the moment I would welcome any form of political organizing in the aims of opposing the current administration. Whether that be from Democrats, centrist Republicans , or even libertarians. I don't care as long as you aren't a fucking neonazi. We need a large tent opposition to oppose fascism as a popular front.

Leftist nitpicking liberal ideology only serves the aims of the fascist. Get over yourself and lock arms with anyone who is willing to stand up to a literal fascist.

  • naming it is enough if it is apparent that most are unaware.

Do you really think that people on Lemmy are unaware that the two party system is a problem?

I think the problem most people are having with this type of criticism is that it's aimed at the only tool we currently have to oppose fascism, while not really giving us any other option. All while not even really being critical of the actual problem.....the fascist.

The frustrating thing about my fellow leftist that most liberal minded on this site have, is that we seem to spend more time trying to fight liberalism than we do fascism. When history shows that the only real way to defeat fascist is to form a popular front with anyone who isn't a fucking fascist.

Liberalism isn't my preferred government choice, but I'll make nice with anyone willing to throw hands at a fucking Nazi. We can settle our differences when the guys who want to exterminate minority groups have left the chat.

  • I mean you have valid points, but you're not really offering much of a solution. I think most people will agree that the two party system has failed the people, but simply not participating in it is exactly what conservatives require to achieve their goals.

I am not a fan of hardly any Democrats, but it would be idiotic to say there's not a stark difference between the two parties, especially at the State level.
