Yep, Debian was (is) a disaster to configure graphics with modern hardware.

Hasn't been the case for years. Perhaps even a decade, from what I recall. Just check the "nonfree" option in the installer, and you'll get all the drivers you need. It's not any harder to set up than Ubuntu these days.

We're gonna need a ton of it for all the space shit we're starting to do again.

Theoretically, anything that can implement boolean logic can be used to build a Turing-complete CPU. It just needs to represent a "true" state", a "false" state, a way to make a comparisons, and an input and output mechanism to feed other subunits or retrieve data from them. Stuff like this has also been implemented using water pumps/valves, and even in Minecraft using redstone. Computers don't have to be based on electronics.

The bar always gets raised for what counts as actual "AI" with each advancement too. Back in the 60s, the procedural AI of the 80s and 90s would have fit the bill, but at the time, we said "nope, not good enough". And so it kept getting better and better, each time surpassing the old tech by leaps and bounds. Still, not "true" AI. Now we have ChatGPT, which some still refuse to call "AI".

We're going to eventually have fully sentient artificial beings walking around amongst us and these people are going to end up being an existential threat to them, I can see it now.
