  • Guess you missed the huge anti Iraq war protests in the early 2000s. And the fact that we've been making Internet jokes about that and George Bush junior since forever.

  • I don't know, maybe, check up on what your kids are watching from time to time? We survived the 90s just fine this way. Now we expect technology to supervise and raise them...

  • How the fuck can we sit here and call China a "hostile" country when our Walmarts are still full of their shit? I guess not hostile enough to not want that sweet cheap-ass plastic lawn chair.

  • Right wing nutcase: "lone wolf, acting alone, yadda yadda, don't lump us in with them..."

LGBTQ nutcase: "they speak for all of them..."

  • It's not backed by energy usage. It's backed by pure, empty, meaningless market speculation. It's a digital baseball card. People use it in the exact same way. It has value because it's "rare", limited, and a bunch of people think so.

  • The people who have the means to just uproot everything and move to another country on a whim are probably not the same people who are struggling to live here, and so the incentive there is to not really care because they're comfortable where they are.

We aren't really taught to give much of a shit about our fellow citizens here. There isn't any kind of social cohesion, it's everyone for themselves. We saw the US's true colors when we tried to get everybody vaccinated.

  • As a former Bitcoin user and fan, I am also anti-Bitcoin. Until they can figure out how to run the network without drawing the energy equivalent of an entire developing country just to check if some numbers are correct in a database, I can't morally justify myself using it any more.

  • Are you licensing your comments??

  • That's not my point. I was talking about the recent price rise.

Every boom/bust cycle so far (and there have been about 4 or 5 of them), you get an initial spike, followed by a second one, and then a long, drawn out "despair" period after a crash.

What you're seeing is the second bounce of a spike that has been ongoing since about 2019/2020. The "despair" phase is probably not too far off now.

I know the past is no indicator of future results, but when it happens over and over and over again, well...

  • Yeah it's called a "dead cat bounce". Zoom out by about 7 years.

Take it from a veteran. They get longer and longer with each iteration of boom/bust cycle. I've been into this shit since 2012. Long before the cryptobros all piled in.

  • What is it called when you don't really care what gender you are? I'm not sure it's binary, because I don't really fully identify with either one and just do whatever I want whenever I want.

  • Throw in a little whimsical wizard while you're at it.

  • This is the guy who supposedly helped code early versions of PayPal. Now I want to see his code out of morbid curiosity.

  • Friend: "What's your system specs?"

Me: "12-core Ryzen CPU, 64GB RAM, 3080ti GPU"

F: "Nice. What games do you play?"

M: "Games...? Is that what else people do with these things?"

  • "Hey guis check out this new shiny esoteric desktop, I modded the shit out of it too hehehe"

    Next day

"Hey guis, halp, how do you unfuck whatever it is I did here?"

  • A 1970's dumb terminal dialed up through an acoustic coupler to a mainframe running Lynx...

  • The laws of physics still apply. We already have to do all kinds of crazy tricks to make transistors as small as they are and not leak electrons all over the place due to quantum tunneling. The best thing we figured out how to do is just pile on more CPU/GPU cores.

It's also arrogant to assume we will continue on this exponential industrial-revolution growth of the last 300 years and not plateau as a species again for the next thousand. We could be looking at an eon of just burnin' away our oil while we try to cling more and more to whatever other energy impinges on this pitiful little planet, trapped in our local space unable to use our pathetic spacecraft to push us any further.
