  • They have multiple purposes, like being a place to hide from an angry mob, or as a storm shelter. Some even have secret escape tunnels.

  • Rich folks have had variations of these for a while, they called them "safe rooms". I've installed security alarms and phone/Internet lines in places like that, as well as monitors that show feeds from the house cameras. It's literally almost an entire house underneath the main house, ready for someone to seal themselves in and live in it for a couple months.

  • Or that they don't have support?

Not specifically the whole Linux/Proton/Game stack. That's Valve's bread and butter, not Canonical or Redhat.

Go ahead, call Redhat and tell them you can't get Skyrim to run, see how far that gets you.

  • Or rather, there's someone who isn't going away anytime soon and someone who you can go to if their shit screws up, someone with an actual address and support number, and it's not just a Github issue tracker page that hasn't been seen by the owner in months.

Some people want that peace of mind. Some people aren't built to scour the internet for hours to maybe find solutions to their problems.

  • "Yep, it's a text file. 25KB in size. Created two weeks ago, modified today...here's your search results for the prompt you gave me:"

You know...stuff your OS couldn't do already. Society is literally going to forget how to use a computer.

  • It never ceases to amaze me how far we can still take a piece of technology that was invented in the 50s.

That's like developing punch cards to the point where the holes are microscopic and can also store terabytes of data. It's almost Steampunk-y.

  • Have they ever in recent history been successful at keeping a society exactly how it is for any length of time, or taken it back to a previous era? It just seems like they love losing and being on the wrong side of history, over and over.

  • Let's hope they step on each other's dicks so much for the next four years that they are completely stalled from implementing any of their agenda.

  • I'm an electronic security tech. I've installed alarm systems in 2024 whose design hasn't changed since the 80s. If they want "modernized" remote control over a network, they usually slap on some sort of external unit like a cell radio or Ethernet adapter that does the translation to the decades-old protocols.

We still have to program the damn things with a USB to RS-232 adapter too.

  • "Good luck, I'm behind 7 proxies!"

  • Okay, I'll choose, keep the sun up later. Make the day last till at least 7 PM in the winter. That way I can still see it after work. I don't give a shit when I'm driving to work.

  • "Did they change that fucking control panel setting/menu again?? Where the fuck is it!"

  • I mean, I'm on Debian and I'm on the same install instance I've had for almost four years now. I'm constantly reading about how some of you people keep hosing your other distros with a normal update...

  • Yeah that sounds like a typical BMW engine layout.
