  • I'd like to add that a lot of these people work in the oil or coal industry or have family members who do. The work, as dangerous and comparatively ill paying as it may be, may be the only thing that puts their town on the map and keeps food on the table. Not seeing a way out for those who can't or won't be retained for another job can be pretty scary, a fear that is very much preyed a upon by conservatives.

  • I was a reddit Sync user and was super bummed when (large scale) API access was shut off, so I jumped on the chance to use Sync for Lemmy. It defaulted to world for signups, presumably for ease of use for migrating reddit users. Knowing that Sync already had a loyal audience that was willing to put in a little effort to migrate, it seems the dev opted to make everything as similar to the reddit UX as possible, including registration.

Now that I'm more familiar with the fediverse, I've been considering migrating to a more specialized instance that matches my interests. Truthfully, though, it seems unlikely that much of anything would change if I did since I'm going to keep using the same app, so I've been slow to move.

To compare this with my experience with Mastodon, I was absolutely overwhelmed by the idea of instances and really had no idea which to join, nor did I have a familiar app to work with. I figured it out eventually, but a lot of the artists I follow didn't or didn't have time to, so overall I haven't spent much time on it. I've spent way too much time on Lemmy so far.

  • For me it's definitely Viscera Cleanup Detail. Super chill and satisfying cleaning game that I often boot up when I just want to shoot the shit with someone. There's also quite a few custom maps after you get through the official ones.

Also Cities Skylines (the first one). Sometimes I just spend a couple hours watching my trains go around with a first person vehicle mod while I watch videos.

  • Cool, the thing we were assured wouldn't happen because free market or something.

Even if it's decided that the EPA has the proper authority, the damage will be done by the time it makes its way through the courts.

The EPA order requires the development of a system specifically designed for PFAS. A similar system is estimated to cost about $25m to develop, or about 0.1% of the air force’s annual budgeting.

Cool cool cool cool cool cool cool....

  • I mean, it's not cope, I just like 7 and 8. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, I'm not out to change anyone's mind, I just liked the movies as a fun adventure with some good themes. I didn't like 9 because my favorite part of 7 and 8 was the idea that you don't have to be from some powerful family to be a hero (something that was better executed in Knives Out), but 9 really threw all that away.

  • Their criteria is based entirely on whether the person in question gives them a boner. Someone beat it to Mulvaney and now has to convince themselves that she is a "real woman" to sleep at night.

  • Definitely this, and maybe a motorized scooter for days that really require you to move around. Also check the conference site or call them to see if they offer any accommodations. But, OP, you're probably not gonna be making it 15-25 miles a day no matter what you do. Be honest with yourself and others about your limitations and don't push yourself too hard. Have a backup plan to get around if you need to.

  • NPR's Serial series had a great season about Gitmo. The last two episodes in particular discuss why this case has been drawn out so long. They also talk with a group of family members of victims who support the plea deal if only to get some closure via official statements from the detainees.

  • It's bullshit too because now they're named after the bridge guardians which look awesome. Driving past them always makes me feel like I'm being tested by those statues in the Neverending Story.
