  • Honestly not being able to move the start bar and being told it won't be changed because their awful new start menu needs it that way was a dealbreaker. Been running Linux Mint exclusively on my desktop for the past few months and it's been pretty smooth, even for playing games. Thank goodness for Proton!

  • Out of curiosity, do you use the more mastadon-like microblogging features of kbin? Having almost exclusively used lemmy through a third party app (Sync), I'm curious how well the two kinds of content mesh.

  • back when it was first put into Fedora and I tried uninstalling, it threatened taking down Libreoffice and Gedit with it.

I did this back when I was a newbie and somehow destroyed either the display server or some other part of the GUI. Sound issues have made me nervous ever since.

  • I stopped playing Elden Ring after getting my ass kicked by Malenia one too many times, and that was coming off of playing Dead Souls and Demons Souls as well. There's no way in hell I'm going to be able to jump back into that game.

  • It's honestly pretty much the industry standard for indie creators. There's nothing super flashy about it, it just does its job very well.

This along with 7-zip and OBS and the like have been pretty impressive success stories for FOSS, even if most of their users don't even know what that means.

  • Honestly they've been incredible. They've been politically active since they were teens and they care more about work/life balance than any other generation before (anecdotally). They've been dealt a shit hand but I'm rooting for them.

  • I hang out in the Python discord quite a lot and it seems to work well for this purpose. I will say that Python's core library and many of the most popular packages are well documented, so it's definitely not a case where discord is the main source of knowledge and that's a good thing. However, a lot of people on there are new to development and don't know where to start, so we answer their beginner questions while teaching them how to search the docs for answers.

  • Important to note as well that both Edge and Opera along with Chrome (and many other niche browsers) are based on Chromium, giving them an even bigger spread of users that are using the same browser from a compatability standpoint.

  • Sure, I just want to feel confident that said regulations actually have teeth and the punishment can't just be factored into the cost of doing business.

So, yes, I'm scared. Maybe that's not rational, but I don't want to look back in 40 years and find out we were wrong about the longevity of nuclear waste storage, or that the many minor infractions over the years have slowly built up into a real problem. I don't want to discover that we've been outsourcing the most dangerous work to developing countries with less employee and environmental protections than our own. If there's a viable method that's inherently safer, I'd feel a little better about it.

  • I think nuclear energy is a great idea in theory, but I have absolutely zero trust in companies handling nuclear waste responsibly. It's not like they have a great track record.

That being said, pretty excited about this if it's as safe as they say.
