  • Reality:

Prices go up for imported goods driving down demand for all goods both domestic and imported.

Retaliatory tariffs, increased cost of resources, and most destructively changes to purchasing behaviors drive down exports and kill domestic production further. These are long term effects as well. As competitive countries fill the niche left from the fucking idiot country who decided to shit on their own market.

  • For 7 years after left my parents place my only form of transportation was a bike. I rode all through college and my first job.

Toward the end I could do 40-50 miles a day and not even think about it. I think my record was 75 miles in a day.

After a 20 year break I pulled my old bike out to ride 2 miles mostly downhill one evening. Holy shit I was sore. I could hardly move the pedals in my old cruising gear.

  • This is why I buy my HVAC filters in bulk 4 or 8 at a time and replace them every 3-4 months (less if there is smoke). The difference it makes in keeping the house clean is very noticable. I get very little dust accumulation except in my teens rooms because they leave their doors closed.

  • No that never happens /S

I used to work with a supplier that hired a former Monsanto executive as their CEO. When his first agenda came out I told their sales team he was an idiot and to have fun looking for a new job a few months.

The CEO bailed after 2 years to start his own "consulting business."

1 year later the company lost 75% of their market share and was laying off people left and right. They are still afloat barely.

After a couple years "consulting", the CEO went to another company in 2023. He didn't bounce fast enough and got caught on this one. He was fired 2 weeks ago and the company shut their doors except for a handful of staff to facilitate the firesale of the companies assets.

  • My newest computer is 5 years old. I see no reason to upgrade anything.

I use my 11 year old laptop with Linux mint on it as well. I maxed out the RAM on it and swapped in a Sata SSD, it boots in under 40 seconds and does everything I need it to do. It's one of those cheap underpowered Celeron processors as well.

  • What's even better, they got his deputy as well. Normally the deputy either gets a promotion, serves as the interim head or transitions the new incoming replacement.

Getting them both means the new replacements are coming in blind. Mistakes can be made due to lack of knowledge for the next year or so.

  • For me, stopping, getting out, and getting some coffee wakes me up for 2-3 hours. I also listen to audiobooks as I drive to keep my brain working. A good engaging story is better than a nap for me.

  • The court’s decision also introduced the concept of systemic failure, which holds providers liable when they fail to adopt preventive measures or remove illegal content. Now, platforms will be expected to establish self-regulation policies, ensure transparency in their procedures, and adopt standardized practices.

Pretty sure this would cover Lemmy and most traditional forums as long as they have a written policy and standards that are consistently enforced.

  • Organic farming releases as much or more "poisons" than conventional. Just because those poisons "natural" doesn't mean they are not harmful. Coppersulfate, pyrethrins, spinosad, neem etc are all indesciminate killers. Rotenone is a banned organic pesticide because it's linked to Parkinson's.

The 3/4 number gets a lot worse when you know we really don't need to farm as much land as we do. If we stopped subsidizing idiotic farming practices and invested heavily in infrastructure, we only need to use 1/4 of the land we do. That includes feeding all the animals. If we migrated to a plant based diet it would be around 1/10th the current land usage.

  • GMO are a tool.

Some GMO's are a good idea. Virus resistance for example was the first GMO I worked with in the 90's. Papaya ringspotvirus is an excellent example.

Some GMO's were a mediocre idea and an overall failure. Like all the efforts with SAMase for improving shelflife. Aka the GMO tomato.

Some GMO's are downright stupid and irresponsible. Like the RR in corn, soy, alfalfa, etc. Its lead to a massive over-application of one chemistry. Creating resistant weeds in all production zones. Or dicamba resistance is soybeans that's fucking up all the remaining trees, shrubs, and forbs.

When scrolling a long list eventually the app freezes and crashes.
