  • I agree it could have been split in 2. I felt that way after I read the book.

  • This is what people should be fearing. Studies have shown that when immigrants come in and “take jobs”, they pay taxes, and buy goods to create a life here, effectively replacing the job they took (since we need people who make beds for them to sleep in, food for them to eat, etc).

This is automation that’s ACTUALLY taking our jobs. This automation doesn’t pay taxes, and doesn’t replace the job it takes.

  • It’s actually really good. It’s based off the book, and covers Snow and his interaction with the 10th hunger games.

  • I get it. Generally people pushing for socialism aren’t pushing to be the USSR. Really what we mean is “Capitalism with really strong socialist safety nets”.

  • I didn’t want to confuse them. One small step of understanding at a time.

  • Ah yes, Norway. The most oppressed nation on earth.

I think you have socialism confused with communism.

  • They found the same with library fines. The amounts weren’t deterring people from not returning their books. People generally return books. The issue was that those who were hit with fines either paid them off or couldn’t. And those who couldn’t, usually needed the books more than anyone. The same can be said with public transit.

If we really want to be a functioning economy where people can afford to both live and work, giving people a reliable, affordable means of transportation is one of the first steps.

  • This should be for everyone. If we really want to cut omissions, reduce traffic, spend less on infrastructure, and make more walkable cities, we should tax cars more and use the funds to pay for free transit for all.

  • Call centres exist because people can’t get the help they need by searching. Take away call centres, and you’re just making it more difficult for customers.

  • Right. This isn’t an issue with Microsoft, it’s an issue of getting a third party to do work when you have very different priorities. Microsoft’s priority is to make money, as all companies do. The governments priority is to have a safe and secure service. The two don’t match, so the government should have created and maintained a safe and secure service.

The biggest issue is that people don’t want the government to over-spend on anything, so they don’t want the government to pay tech people tech salaries. So even if they did just do it themselves, you can’t trust it’s done by the best people because it’s only done by those who are willing to work at 30% of the pay.

So the issue isn’t really with Microsoft, it’s with the government for not being aware of priorities, and not being willing to pay for what’s important.

  • There’s an issue with your logic. “When App is opened”. When the iPad calculator app is opened?…

  • Hence the rant. It’s sad that men don’t seek to better themselves at the same rate.

Kudos to OP for looking to be the best step-dad he can be!

  • I’m one of those people that has PCalc, but likes the shortcut in my control centre. If I could put any app in my control centre, it wouldn’t be a problem.

  • Maybe this year we’ll finally get a calculator for iPad. Maybe.

  • One day. But until then, Lemmy is already great.

  • Gas doesn’t explode, that’s just in movies. It does burn though, just like batteries. Not a case for gas cars over EVs, but Tesla and their retracting door handles, or handles that don’t work without power (like from a fire), are definitely reasons why I wouldn’t choose Tesla over another EV.

  • More than just billionaires. Anyone who invests. But that’s disproportionately richer people, so it’s good. My complaint is that the tax isn’t raised enough.
