  • Haha, yeah. Pretty sure I would have been summoned to have a chat with HR in that case.

  • Years ago, when I first moved to America from the UK, I was working in a pretty quiet office that backed on to a field. One day mouse appeared, freaked out a couple of the gals in the office, and then it ran and hid under an office cube.

I investigated to see where it was hiding, but it was pretty dark down there. So I asked if either of the gals had a torch. They both got an expression of wide-eyed horror, which confused me for a few seconds.

Then I realized that torch had a different term in America. So I corrected myself and asked if either of them had a flashlight. And they looked very relieved. They thought I was going to get an old school torch and try to smoke the mouse out or set it on fire, and probably set the whole cube on fire in the process.

  • The last Conservative government in the UK tried something very similar. They paid Rwanda to take illegal immigrants. It turned into a complete disaster, ruffled with logistical, legal, and cost issues.

But I'm sure this new program by the Trump administration will go just fine! /s

  • I've said it before but I'll say it again (along with many in this thread I'm sure): a large part of our fucked up political culture comes from lead poisoning. But not in a simple single-vector way.

In addition to the obvious neurotoxin effect that lead has and the way it amplifies mental health issues, there's another vector: the effect that the behavior of lead-poisoned individuals have on the people around them. Especially in the era of social media. And this ripples through society and creates a crescendo of sociological damage.

  • And us Americans in the middle of all this are going: "Well this is weird! Usually we're the ones pissing off our North American neighbors!"

  • Eh, it's fairly unlikely but not that far fetched. A lot of insurance companies have pulled out of Florida now. So why not airlines if they start getting fined for bullshit reasons.

  • He's a battle-hardened war veteran. The war in question being his war against common sense, empathy and sanity.

  • and pardon on a case-by-case basis the working-class Americans in the federal prison system whose lives have been ruined by unjustly aggressive prosecutions for nonviolent offenses

It's a noble idea in principle. But how the hell can a sizeable number of innocent or excessively punished people be pardoned on a case by case basis in the span of under 7 weeks?

This is an extremely impractical idea to implement, and reeks of empty grandstanding in by Jeffries.

  • I think having English heritage is not trendy for several reasons.

    • It's seen as the default (as you pointed out), and thus boring.
    • It's not seen as exotic/fashionable because of stereotypes about the English.
    • The English have traditionally been considered America's enemies because of what happened two hundred and fifty years ago.
    • Stories being passed down (and possible exaggerated) from earlier generations about how the English oppressed their ancestors.

ETA: Man, you really riled up some people!

  • The character in the poster looks like a young Jack White. Does the character have a seven nation army supporting him?

  • What Firefox extensions are you using on mobile? I have a few (e.g. uBlock Origin), but I'm always interested in hearing about other good ones.

  • Yes it's the same storage size (SSD vs mechanical doesn't change that). But I would caution to get a larger drive. From my experience, 256gb gets pretty limiting. I would go with at least 512gb.

  • The only reason I do it is because I have no other choice. For me it's either suffering with Comcast or using extremely shitty DSL (which is too slow for me to do my job properly). I live in a suburban area, but for some reason, my neighborhood has only one high speed option. And I know there are plenty of other people all over the country in the same predicament.

  • He's so far in Putin's pocket that he's snuggling up to his nutsack.

  • That's assuming Europe wasn't economically stretched already, and America didn't have an incoming president who wasn't more interested in fellating Putin.

  • Oh, I think we all know which side they would fight if given the choice. They would twerk for 'Daddy Vladi'.

  • Hey, Texas construction industry leaders...

    🔳 Found out

  • Trump to the public: "Oh no! Ukraine set of a bomb in San Francisco/LA/NYC! See people? Putin and Kim Jong Un were the good guys all along!"

Trump later on a private call: "Did I do good, Daddy Vlad?"
