  • On our old WoW guild application form we included:

"Please rank all of the Star Trek captains you know from best to worst"

and then gave them a nice big empty text box to go to town in. Some answered seriously, and exhaustively. Some only knew Kirk, or didn't know any at all. Some chose to go off on a rant about Star Wars being better, or include a joke or tell an anecdote about their relationship to scifi.

Whatever the answer we always learned something about the person and that was a good jumping off point if they got accepted. We did get the occasional humourless "wtf this is stupid" type response but, shockingly, this was rarely the only reason we had for denying such applications.

  • I make videos and still think they're an unsuitable format for at least 90% of the stuff they get used for.

  • Deleting such a pivotal post should be a criminal offence.

  • Like I said the OP seems to have been deleted although turns out you can still see the comments at https://old.lemmy.world/post/440073 which should give you a general idea. Bear in mind most people had been on Lemmy for just a few days at this point.

  • The first truly viral Lemmy post, I believe. It was a thing to behold. Post over in !asklemmy@lemmy.ml from a guy asking how to not poop for three days but being extremely mysterious about the reasons why.

Did we ever find out why, in the end? Idk but I have chosen to enjoy the mystery.

I already lose track of whether this led directly to the bean craze or if the bean craze was unrelated, but they happened very close together!

Unfortunately seems like the original post has been deleted and now I am sad.

  • And the Discworld books!

  • Hah, this is a new one on me

  • Works the same way regular Mastodon profiles do. They'll look blank when viewed from your instance until someone from there follows them and starts them federating. In the meantime you can do the "view original profile" thing to see the actual community (or in the case of a Mastodon user, their full profile) and decide if they look interesting.

  • Unless something some day suggests "this" is "all about" anything at all, it seems weird to me to try and imagine meaning where there's no evidence of any πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

No judgement on people who find that scary or take comfort in faith or whatever, we're all different. Just doesn't bother me.

  • Excellent! The more the merrier :)

  • Take a breath. Scaled sort is coming in the next version.

  • No but it wasn't the same axe you inherited ten seconds after you inherited it, either.

  • I had to think about this for a minute because I'm British and religion is just not a huge deal here so I don't often think about it. Got some religious friends (mostly Americans but there are a few here too) but it's just never really been a part of my life in a positive or a negative way.

My philosophy pretty much boils down to "we're just here, roll with it" because anything else is essentially looking for meaning where it appears to not exist.

  • Not the person you're asking, but logic tells me that these questions are meaningless so no "coping" required πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

  • I'm English, which is probably enough said.

I'm also up at half three in the morning because I'm not feeling well, so the first thing I did was grab a cuppa. Finishing it and needing another is probably the only thing that's going to get me out of this electric blanket all day.

  • I have such fond memories of this film. Going to see it at our local small-town cinema when it came out and I was like 8 or 9 years old. Me and my little brother used to get dropped off there every Saturday morning with a couple packets of sweets up our sleeves and just left to watch whatever was on while our parents did mysterious grownup errands.

Anyway I remembered it being great but was worried it was just a nostalgia thing. Saw it again a couple years ago and nope! Still holds up! It's a genuinely great film and anyone who hasn't seen it should do so immediately.
