  • If a DE has a list of "must install" extensions/plugins for it to be usable, then that DE is not for me.

I don't know most of these extensions, but from the names it very opinionated and depends on who you are if those extensions are a must have for you. I mean, Burn My Windows does not sound like a must have, while Caffeine does.

Title should have been: "15 Extensions I Have To Install On GNOME".

  • Because Gnome defaulted to Wayland for a long time, before they now plan to ditch it's X11 session, while Plasma just recently started defaulting to Wayland. I think Fedora 38 is when they defaulted to wayland in the Plasma edition. Gnome had a way longer lead time, IIRC.

  • I didn't know that. So they go out of their way to remove the x11 session. That's odd.

  • Likely because it's mainly written in PHP and the default database is SQLite, which is not great for large deployments.

But I use Nextcloud daily on a low end machine and I don't think it's that bad.

  • Not exactly the same.

Plasma 6 still installs the X11 session. This change will make it so the Gnome X11 session is not getting installed by deafult, so you need to install it yourself if you need it. In Plasma 6, you just change to the X11 session in your Display Manager.

  • Silverbullet looks pretty easy to set up. Can you change the font and such it uses?

  • I don't know any lightweight options, but as VS-Code was suggested, I'd like to suggest Hedgedoc too.

  • I might be a bit paranoid here, but I would just re-install the system. Could be some malicious stuff at work here.

  • Same here. I have a few static sites setup to just be served via nginx.

  • Ah, that's good to hear. So my system will come back up, it will just complain until I do these microcode changes.

So your post/comment was just being preemptive of future changes. :)

  • Update to QT6

This one is a big thing. Lots of stuff changed between qt5 and qt6, so it was a massive effort to get done. They also used this "rewrite" to clean up the code a lot.

  • Okay. But they do state in the announcement, that to ensure that no breaking occurs, they introduced some conflicts. So even if I just update packages, I should get my system up and running and be able to make any changes when they are required?

They don't mention anywhere that manual intervention is required for this update.

  • As I read the announcement it sounds like you only need to do changes if you setup early-microcode stuff. So if you have a completely standard install, no changes would be needed other than updating packages.

    Am I wrong in this?

  • Both gitlab and gitea/forgejo has plans to add federation. But it's been planned for years now and I'm not sure how close we are to actually getting it.

Besides, git itself is federated as you create copies of repositories on your computer, just like anyone else. It's just not very "discoverable".

  • I think the main benefit is that Guests devices on your network can't find and exploit your own devices.

  • I think most wifi routers segregate the two networks, so they can't see devices on eachothers network.

Someone will surely correct me if I'm wrong in this.

  • Some good stuff in there. Nice to see that much work, from such a small team.

  • Okay. I can already do that in the normal client app. But this client looks really nice and I'm glad it's a thing. :)

  • How quick and useful is the interface compared to the regular Jellyfin app when playing music? I currently use the regular client, since I already have it installed for video content.
