  • But I also don't understand why HDMI has fucking DRM built into it.

If I remember correctly, the DRM was a result of pushback from the MPAA back when Blue-Ray and HD-DVD were coming out. They didn’t want a digital signal that could be easily recorded like S-Video or composite.

  • Despite, knowing where I am currently, may I suggest Audible? Once you’ve stripped the DRM you can then put it into whatever format you want. There’s a Windows application called OpenAudible, I that’s what it’s called, that I use to strip the DRM and then transcode it into MP4.

It’s not free, I know, but they seem to have almost any audiobook you might want.

  • Much as I like Arstechnica, this was one of the worse articles I've read there in a while. It's based off of this bullitin.

The author seems to have taken this:

Do not use ophthalmic products that:

    • Are marketed as OTC products to treat serious eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinopathy or macular degeneration. There > are no OTC treatments for these conditions.
    • Are labeled as homeopathic, as these products should not be marketed.

And then the author seemed to imply that ALL eye drops are homeopathic and should be pulled, which is not quite what the FDA was saying.

edit: I hit post before I had finished typing when I had intended to hit preview to check my markdown. edit: And then I missed the typos anyhow. Screw it. Send it.

  • Like I said, whether it’s good deal or not depends on how your cost/benefit comparison comes out.

For me, it went against renting a printer (I print maybe 5 pages a year nowadays), and for renting a Roomba as my family often seems to think they were born in a barn. 😂 Renting that Roomba has, for me, turned out much cheaper than owning it.

  • I mean, idk what the Instant Ink plans are like.

I’ve used them. Basically it just turns your printer purchase into a printer rental.

It’s not a bad deal, necessarily, but if your card declines for any reason, HP bricks your printer (including non-printer functionality) until you pay up. And printing more than your chosen plan allows can get pricey real quick. As little as I print, though, a laser printer was a more reliable option and much cheaper long term.

iRobot does something similar with their Select program. Like HP’s Instant Ink, it’s a great deal for some folks, not so much for others.

  • You’re not wrong, but also, my sister was asking me why I run a Jellyfin, yesterday, when I can stream from any service. She wasn’t aware that this was a thing, and she currently works in the film and tv industry.

It’s good that this pops up from time to time, if only to remind folks that if you are dependent upon someone else, sooner or later they can pull the rug on you and cause you pain. This is a realitvely gentle reminder of that fact.

  • Same as usual. Vote for the individuals that seem like they are the best person for whatever position I am voting on at that point in time.

Historically, I haven’t cared about what party they were affiliated with, however I suspect it’s going to be a good long while before I vote for a Republican again.

  • Hmm, like most things, depends on the consumer. I bought my house in 2014. It’s been working out great for me at the moment. Love my $700/month mortgage. It’s s cheaper than anything I could rent in my area right now. The people having an issue right now are the banks and the folks on the lower end of the economic ladder. I can’t say I’m too concerned about the problems that the banks are having. For everyone else, I feel for them. They just need to hang on, keep paying attention, and be patient. Things will get better.

  • Sure do! Been living in Alabama for almost 20 years at this point. Grew up in Minnesota. While I appreciate how slammed your profession is right now, you’re not really having an much of an effect on the market just yet. And none at all at the lower end of the market. I have seen a lot of really nice builds at price points I can’t afford though.

The mediam household income in Alabama is $54,943 and the median individual income is $30,458 according to the US Census Bureau. My wife and I combined make roughly $110k with myself making $70k. My wife is a mental health therapist with a master’s degree and I drive a truck. We’re lucky, but a lot of folks ain’t.

Growing up I was told, when your buying a house, your budget should be no more 2 times 1 persons (the husband’s) salary. Back in 2005 Dave Ramsey said no more than 4 times the household income. I did a bit of digging using both guides to see just what folks could afford in our local property market right now at the most common wages in the area, and the pickings are pretty slim until you get to the wages common for skilled trades. Given how frequently my wife, or I have been out of work, I decided use only a single income in my searches.

Here’s a paste dump of what I found:
