You might try Tailscale or Wire Guard. Either can be used to create a mesh VPN that can include any device you want. Connect your devices to the VPN then you just access it like it is on your local network. Of the two I use Tailscale. Dead simple to setup on pretty much any device.

Depending on what installation method you choose to go with, you don't need a domain. It's just very much helpful to have one. Especially if you decide to have it public facing. Plus domains are cheap. A bigger issue for us self hosters is dealing with dynamic IPs. Most of the time you can buy a static IP from your ISP, but if that is not an option, most domain providers provide a way to deal with variable IP addresses.

And yes, Tailscale does ignore dynamic IP addresses. I think Wire Guard does as well as Tailscale is built on Wire Guard.

Sounds like a connection would work with that setup but it would depend on what you are planning on hosting. Anything that is sensitive to latency would probably not work well. Static sites should be fine though.

There are a couple of options. What I currently do is an.encrypted borg backup of my important files which is then synced to Dropbox and Google Drive. Currently looking for an inexpensive tape drive though to back up everything locally. Those things are flipping expensive!

Generally, any trade will always have good job security and decent pay. Trucking, maintenance (welder, electrician, plumber, or mechanic (diesel or heavy equipment, auto is usually over staffed) and HVAC) and accounting seem to have been the most reliable trades to find work over the last 20 years or so. Construction is very boom and bust. Medicine and maintenance are VERY short staffed currently, especially in rural areas.

In 2008 I chose trucking. Initial training was 6 weeks and cost me $10,000 USD back in 2008 followed by 3 months over the road with a trainer. Hate the job, but the pay is decent-ish (I've generally made between $55K and $75K), it doesn't usually matter where you live and the few times I've found myself needing a new job I've been hired within 72 hours of applying for the position.

If you do go trucking, avoid any company with a Teamsters Union presence like the plague. Every Teamster I've met to date has been an complete and total self-important asshat and they seem to have a tendency to call strike just for the hell of it (Though they are payed well).

About 2 years ago, I moved my music to Jellyfin and have been using their media players on every platform I use (iOS, FireTV, Ubuntu, and Windows). At this point my music library is close to 200 GB, kinda hard to store that much on every device I own.

I'm willing to put up with Lemmy's glitches. The vast majority of admins, mods, and developers are volunteers doing what they do (largely for free) simply because they think it's worth doing. If it were a product I paid for I would not be near as chill about it.

Lemmy was a fairly young project when everyone started piling in from Reddit. If the glitches you're experiencing bother you that badly, perhaps consider contributing to the project, the network or your homeserver. Open source projects work best when everyone contributes what they can, when they can and as they can.

Way back when, I think I was using WinAmp (on XP) and then k3b (when I moved to Linux) to rip and burn cds, but I don’t recall hearing anything about k3b in a couple of years. As for something more recent, I’m afraid I’ve been running Windows lately so I don’t know what available in Linux land.

If you’ve got wine installed you might give Exact Audio Copy a try. It’s what I’ve been using since I started ripping cds again. I don’t know if it work in wine however. I didn’t have any luck ripping cds with WinAmp when I tried recently, though surprisingly, it does still run in Windows 11.

It’s doable but you should treat it more as a learning opportunity than a production system. Honestly, that’s old enough that a RPi might be able to run circle around it.

The Celeron 1011 is a 32bit processor, so Debian or Gentoo may be the only distributions that still support it and you will probably have to compile from source anything you want to run. A gig of ram was good for its time.

The Linux Unplugged crew from Jupiter Broadcasting are currently doing a 32bit challenge to see if such systems are still usable for day to day usage. It’s going to be interesting.

That’s one of the things I like about NextCloud. Even the most non-technical person knows how to follow a link in a email (to many an IT tech’s lament). All I do is share the file in NextCloud, maybe password protect it with a simple password, and copy the share link to the email or text message. Bob’s your uncle. Grandma Nosy-Britches gets to see the files but her email or messaging provider (Google, Mircrosoft, or whoever) does not…. At least until she shares the file directly. More likely though she will share the link. But that’s probably not something I’m too concerned about.

You can share pics by a secure channel and they'll just repost it all over the place anyway.

I’m more concerned about accidentally tripping safety or security systems I don’t fully understand and having something I depend on suddenly cut off than I am the vagaries of dear Aunt Noisy. I can pretty well guess what Aunt Noisy or Grandma Nosy-Britches will do and it’s either not a problem or I’ve taken steps to avoid any problems.

My work is an outlier as we are in grocery distribution. We do shut down for major holidays, but a day earlier. So rather than getting the 25th off, I get the 24th off. We load the groceries on the trucks Christmas night and the trucks arrive at their destination early on the 26th. And yes, we are paid well.

Short answer to your question: NO! DO NOT SEND ANY SENSITIVE DATA (INCLUDING PHOTOS) VIA ANY PATH, OR SERVICE YOU DO NOT FULLY CONTROL!!!

Long answer: While What'sApp, Meta and the like, are not known to be quite as... proactive as Google in cracking down on child pornography there is the very real risk that any data you send via any service may be scanned via a ML algorithm and flagged. What happens next depends on the particular service. Not sure about WhatsApp, but in the case of Google, once your account is flagged, your entire account is forwarded to Law Enforcement. As you are just sending pictures of your new arrival (Congrats again!), odds are that the officer assigned will take one look at it and clear you. All good, so far, right? Yea, not so much. You might not be going to jail but when Google locks down an account, they do not reactivate it, regardless of what law enforcement might decide, and as they are a private company, suing them to get your accounts reactivated is a lost cause. They are allowed to decide whom they want as a customer so long as their standard is applied evenly and doesn't target certain protected groups.

No service you use should ever be allowed to see anything important to you. Ever.

If you can, I would self host a cloud service like NextCloud out of your own home to share files freely, although an GPG encrypted email would work. Your current email provider is fine, although use a third party email client that supports encryption, like Thunderbird. and much as I like ProtonMail's stance on privacy, I would still use a separate encryption method for anything truly sensitive.

I know I sound like a privacy nutjob, but seriously. When the consequences of a false allegation are that high, you should recognize the threat and act accordingly. I use Google, TikTok, iCloud and others, but if the subject matter is anything much more consequential than the weather, then it doesn't touch their servers. It's not so much paranoia as it is threat mitigation. Google and Apple's services are incredibly useful, but if you depend on them too much, the loss of them could hurt, alot.

That corporations doing bad things are anything other than individuals doing bad things and hiding it in the anonymity of the “corporation”. Corporations are not people. People are people, and people have a sad tendency to do horrible shit to other people, especially those outside their social circle.

But I also don't understand why HDMI has fucking DRM built into it.

If I remember correctly, the DRM was a result of pushback from the MPAA back when Blue-Ray and HD-DVD were coming out. They didn’t want a digital signal that could be easily recorded like S-Video or composite.
