    Doesn't work because of defederation.

    Assume users from instance X can see B, C and D, but not A.

    Now all they get is three teaser posts, referring to community A, which is invisible and inaccessible for them.

    Because of defederation, each community must be able to work as a standalone.

  • This strong wind band is a direct consequence of Earth's rotation and the strong temperature differences between polar and moderate latitudes.

    Sounds like something global warming can make worse.

    Isn't the northern hemisphere jet stream struggling due to decreasing temperature differences, since the poles are warming faster? Which then causes weather to change less, making things more extreme?

  • Yes; Ultimately, there will be an agreement at the negotiation table.

    But as long as there is a disagreement over where that final line will be drawn ...

    As long as one party thinks they can get a better result on the battlefield ...

    The fighting will continue.

  • True. But if you zoom further out, it becomes genocides again. The rise of humans was only possible for the downfall of other species. The rise of human civilization spelled doom for many others.

    Ok, genocide strictly only applies to other humans. Anyways the core idea remains: For one culture to spread, others have to give way.

    No one notices someone that does small acts of kindness.

    Sad, isn't it? History books are like a gallery of psychopaths grabbing for more and more power.

  • So much lulz in the article.

    Russia’s central bank has halted the circulation of a new 1,000 ruble note after Orthodox priests complained that the image of a church dome lacked a cross – even though it does not have one in real life.

    The bank had presented new designs of the 1,000 and 5,000 ruble notes earlier this week.

    One of them featured two religious sites in the majority-Muslim Tatarstan republic: a minaret with an Islamic crescent moon and an Orthodox church with a dome that did not have a cross on it.

    The 17th-century church’s cross was removed by Bolsheviks after the 1917 revolution. The building now serves as a state museum.

    But the lack of the cross quickly drew the ire of Orthodox clerics.

    Pavel Ostrovsky, a priest, said on Telegram that the bill was either the result of “the stupidity of the designers” or a “deliberate provocation” by the “followers of Islam” in Tatarstan.

    The celebrity priest, who has 174,000 followers on the app, said “there was no difference what the building looks like in real life” as most Russians do not know its history.

  • Genocide, uh, finds a way.

    From an evolutionary perspective, the history of life is made from genocides, with survivors riding on top. Everybody's fighting for their niche.

    Similarly, the abrahamic religions compete for their access to the Holy Land.

  • That, and people trying out Lemmy, but not continuing to use it at some point for some reason.

    Like I peeked into two or three other platforms before sticking with Lemmy. I don't even know their names anymore.

  • no one is arguing about how many people died

    Oh, people are arguing about exactly that. We're even in a subthread which is all about the number 500!

            You don’t get it. This is to show how ridiculous 500 people claim is.

    Now, who has a rocket that can kill hundreds of humans

    As far as I know, all evidence points to a palestinian device, including the small blast radius.

    And the claim that "hundreds of humans" were killed is most probably fake news.

    I'm not interested to go into further rabbit holes. This cannot be resolved in debate anyways. Future investigations might reveal what happened, we cannot do that here.

  • Ok, fair point. But still, the explosion only has finite power. Shock waves literally do have a kill limit. They cannot rip through waves and waves of human flesh and still come out deadly on the other side. At some point, the energy is absorbed, the fragments are absorbed.

  • These "protesters" are the actual fascists. They literally parrot ideas and shout slogans which were popular among the NSDAP, and throw molotov cocktails at synagogues.

    Last time a German democracy accepted a movement like this as an equal among other political ideas, we ended up with the Third Reich.

  • Not exactly sure how you meant that. To be safe, let's remind ourselves of the paradox of tolerance.

    To remain a free society, we have to protect the freedom to exist for all participants, which excludes the freedom to stir up hate and cause violence, or to throw molotov cocktails against synagogues. Your freedom ends where my freedom begins.

  • Yes, I feel you.

    And yes, that's how it is. It's an insanely complex industry if you really want to understand how things work.

    Which you don't need to get things done.

    Which you still can if you really want, if you're willing to invest the time and energy to study it thoroughly for many years if not decades.

    But even then, chances are you'll be touching libraries, concepts or technologies which you did not study in-depth yet. I think you need to be both aware and tolerant of limited knowledge, and willing to learn continuously.

  • I’m perfectly content to sit this one out.

    Sending two carrier strike groups (which is just the tip of the iceberg of aid and involvement) is hardly "to sit this one out".

    Generally, I think the US is involved in all continents not because of humanitarian / world police reasons, but because they protect their economic and geostrategic interests. Viewed from this perspective, being involved is the selfish stance. Reducing engagement would mean to lose power and influence, rivals gaining ground.

  • Yes, that might be the case under the current circumstances. The above picture helped to imagine what 500 people look like crammed squarely in a space. I doubt the 500 hypothetical people resting in the parking lot were placed more tightly than that.

    Next, look at pictures of the detonation crater, which has the size of a sewer manhole. Imagine that explosion going off in the middle of the audience of 500 people. Would they all die from that? The sheer amount of body mass and flesh would shield the people in rows 20+ from the explosion.

    I bet you couldn't kill 500 people with whatever exploded there, if you tied them directly onto the bomb, or rocket, or whatever. Is there any precedent of a terrorist attack or military strike or anything which killed that many people with a similarly small explosion?

  • Yes, the definition is vague: https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/genocide.shtml

    genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

    • Killing members of the group;
    • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
    • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
    • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
    • Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

    It hinges on "intent", which needs to be inferred and interpreted. It includes terms like "in whole or in part", and does not specify how many "members of the group" are the lower limit.

    However, the main point of R0cket_M00se still stands. There is a significant width in the spectrum of acts and intents which can be classified as genocide, with Hamas proudly on the upper end.
