  • Yea, we’ve all gotten so used to online shopping that we’ve forgotten what we’re allowed to do when it comes to local stores. I even worked retail in a motorcycle shop selling gear and ordered stuff from suppliers all the time.

  • To be honest, since most places ship from their physical locations(which may not have stock or carry something at all due to demand) and Amazon’s incredibly predatory practices it means that they are pretty much the only option. I’ve gotten stuff from Etsy as well(but it doesn’t help for, like, water filters and certain appliance parts), and I really have always tried to avoid Amazon, but there are just some things where they’re the only ones where I can buy some of this stuff.

And like I said, I’m gunna have to just start asking outright for stuff even if whatever store doesn’t carry it normally. It’ll take some patience but I’ll live.

  • People gotta start working the hours they’re paid for. If I’m working my shift well then it’s not my fault that the company is understaffed and I am not gunna bust my ass to cover for someone’s poor leadership.

  • There actually are things that one just cannot find elsewhere easily, and most of the places that reliably carry them locally are places like Walmart which aren’t better. That said, it’s always the very last place I look.

With all this nonsense I’m going to start asking local stores if they can order stuff for me, though, and just be extra patient. For example, it’s wild how little there is for mandolins at local music stores but at least the British strings I’m going to try switching to are there so that’s something.

  • “Just because they disagree with the politics” look we can say what we want about the burning Teslas part this isn’t a “little disagreement”. Musk’s a full-blown turbo-Nazi and in and in Germany, where this happened, he’s pouring money into the AFD which is essentially just the return of a German Nazi party. Don’t water it down.

  • ICE cars are filled with gasoline and function by blowing it up, the risk is clear. EVs should not be catching fire.

Also yea, I want people to use public transportation, actually. And I want villages to return, not these horrendous sprawling “small towns” where, despite having less stuff than my Montréal neighbourhood, it’s a huge pain to get anywhere and you need a car at least simply because too many jobs that could be remote aren’t.

  • At some point you have to draw a line, and the car sold by the guy who’s directly helping to destroy the US, helping the AFD in Germany get more power, and cutting aid to so many other countries which will lead to millions of deaths is a pretty fucking easy line to draw. Besides, as the saying goes, “electric cars aren’t here to save the planet, they’re here to save cars” so take public transit and fight for it if you don’t have it(also this is in Germany and Europe generally has more options than the backwater that is the US).

There are plenty of other options that aren’t so boldly rotten as Tesla, too. People not wanting even the slightest inconvenience is how we get into these messes and it’s time to buck up and deal with it.

  • Civilized countries require insurance so that victims aren’t at fault and on the hook, and better ones will even provide it(the province of Québec does the liability portion, for example).

  • Like the other person said, you can at least control what you interact with directly. So you cancel your Prime subscription and turn your lights with your hand instead of an Echo but you don’t worry so much about trying to figure out if any of the several companies involved in making [product] have some form of attachment to AWS.

And there will be some level of consumption in this horrible system that’s not gunna be good in order for you to not be horribly depressed but people can shed more than they think and alternatives do exist for many of the ones you might put at lower priority.

  • Yea but these people aren’t being embarrassed. They have no shame, they do not care, and the places that people are the most mad at are specifically not doing anything to really pressure them to feel bad about it. There is disagreeable speech and there is hate speech and I have zero time for the latter.

  • You know there’s a difference between letting someone’s objectively garbage opinions watch adults do the right thing and validating those opinions on large platforms?

It’s not a difference in opinion anyway, it’s a huge lie fueled by high-octane hate. They aren’t serious people and are not coming to the table with any intention of talking in good faith. If they even slightly cared about reality they wouldn’t have these views and as the old saying goes “you can’t logic someone out of an argument they didn’t logic themselves into”.

The reason this has gone on for so long is because Americans are spineless and enable this behaviour. They are thoroughly afraid of upsetting the status quo and so the best they can do is weak centrism while validating and giving confidence to the worst people you know. It isn’t the right-wing echo chambers, those have always existed and will continue to exist, it’s the fact that the public at large allows those echo chambers to grow by doing literally nothing about it or even helping because “balance”.

OH AND ALSO the right owns most of the mainstream media, like the enormity that is FOX-FUCKING-NEWS, and loves to deplatform progressive opinions. They enact huge amounts of censorship all the time and consider words like “cisgender” a slur while asking for trans people to live in silence and fear. Don’t come in here acting like they’re poor little oppressed babies.

    You’re a clown.

  • If anyone reads that and goes “hell yea”…

Also what the fuck is a “nuclear reactor startup”?!? God, tech bros really take a whole bunch of privilege and advantage and just throw it all away to be dumber than anyone could have thought possible.

  • Also, forgetting Russia for a moment, the ultra rich love this shit. They have enough real money to buy up all the smaller businesses. They love economic downturns like this, and it’s possible that Trump is simply a fanboy simp who is voluntarily taking Russian advice and example. It’s also important to say this because it means the stupid, zero-memory US citizens need to understand that it will continue even with Trump gone and even if Russia disappears.

He’s not doing this because of blackmail, he’s doing this because he wants to.

  • ITT: Great examples of why the US has failed. Too many people trying to say “c’mon it’s bad but not that bad!” Actually it is, these are all tests to see what the population will put up with, they’re boiling the frog slowly and the frog is telling anyone trying to help it to “calm down”.
