Do you think vote sould be private ? Public ? And why ?
I believe vote should be visible by anyone as the modlog. It allow us to mitigate raid, troll, mod abuse. However, i'm aware it could lead to potential issue as mod abuse, harrassement...
Are you sastified with the current voting system ? And why ?
No. I'm not sastified because vote aim was to highlight content. Currently, It partly achieve that goal. The content is highlighted because it is popular. For me, there is some kind of social and cultural pressure.
So i think we can explore it. Slashdot seems a good example as it separate funny comment to more serious one and troll. I would like to highlight technical comment and good website source.
Having a list of blocked website and the reason would be great. We can also limit downvote to subscriber and certain users. PieFed already do that.
It would be great to add emojis, as in iceshrimp. It allow us to express our feeling :)
What other interesting software/website that tried something different do you know ?
For now, i only know slashdot and tournesol. I shared a link about quadratic vote because i find it more interesting than voting yes-no.
What way do you imagine to highlight content and improve search, discoverability ?
Maybe a debate mode ?
For example, here, under this post, we are sharing the pro and con of the voting system and our thoughts.
What if we have a nice board that sum up all our argument and analyse our link via a bias system ? As the website alternative to.
Or we can also underline part of a comment and add link, comment, share our opinion. It would be a threaded quote system.
I hope we will see other example that can inspire us. :)
Sourd oraliste de naissance, i manage this community !pi_sourd@jlai.lu :)
Sorry i i reply ya in english as it is an english community. 😅
Well, Deaf people won't notice it, except if they were earing because it is part of the sound culture. Or if they know how to write and which sound it does. Maybe by reading they can notice the rhymes.
For Deaf, i think the only thing that will matter there are your lips because they will try to decode it and [p] , [b] are the same sound for them. You are moving your lips the same way.
I'm not sure if i understood your question right. I would said hearing the same sound doesn't appeal me a lot however felling the rythmic drum in my body is powerful.
They can but in France their writting skill and understanding complex sentence are below average.
Why ? Because we lack bilingual school. If we had teachers teaching french and sign language, we wouldn't have to translate everything in sign language.
Lastly, i believe that some Deaf refuse text as it represent a form of oppression culture. But i'm not sure about it. that's my feelings as I'm often blamed for my long text when i write to them which is not the case with earing one. Maybe they are too long.
However, there were ton of articles about french election but they wanted a sign language version...so i dunno.
Mostly because the brain is the architect. The cochlear implant only provide electrical stimulis and the brain do the translation. And when we are young, our brain will create faster neural connection. (But i'm not sure, i don't know how the brain evolve though age)
I don't think it is an outdated pathologisation. I suffered a lot from depression and loneliness partly because of my deafness. I was born profoundly deaf and wear hearing aid since 3 years old. At 30 year old i decided to experience the cochlear implant because i was stuck in my life. It has only been two month since its activation and i'm starting to see its benefit.
It depend on each one situation, it's a balance between risk and benefit and, for me, the cochlear implant outweight the risk.
A culture is based on language. It shape your way of thinking, create a structure, define color...So when you speak, you share a common culture.
Deaf people created another language to compensate their hearing lost and communicate between themselve : sign language. Their culture is based on the lost of their hearing sens. That's one of the reason we call them "Deaf community". Not Deaf people.
So when parents decide to help their kids with the cochlear implant, without teaching sign language, it do endanger Deaf communities.
However, if i had deaf kids, i would give them the cochlear implant because it is much more powerful compared to hearing aid and i want to give them the best life experience and the best education. The education for deaf people is poor compared to hearing one due to a lack of bilingual teachers and school fund.
There is a huge lack of content in sign language. Have you ever seen a wikipedia page in sign language ? Futhermore lot deaf people i have met doesn't know to write a correct sentence since there is a lack of bilingual teachers. So lot of them can't do an university course and call a tird person for help.
I would also give to my kids sign language because, even with the technological progress, they are still Deaf. It won't cure their deafness. If their cochlear implant break or its production end, they will be able to live on and sign and discover deaf community and their beautiful culture.
Most of parent haven't met Deaf people, they don't know sign language. I think they are affraid, worried. There is a lack of information. Anyway, they did the best they could do with the information given to them at the present time. During my reeducation session, I met a mother of two young implanted kids. She was very very happy to met me, a Deaf adulte. Because i speak, i sign and i shared my life experience. She wanted to know what do they hear. She wanted to know their experience : "It is the same sound as myself ?"
So, in some way, i showed her that her kids can do it. It reassured her for their futur.
It’s more about the quality of the content: you posted more than a couple hundred characters and thus were able to clearly outline what you wanted, why, and how you thought that would improve things.
Mastodon has the twitter problem where it’s short-form hot-takes and basically no good long-form content, other than like, to link to somewhere else for the good content.
I don’t have a lot of use for that kind of content especially in a format where it’s hard to respond to and have an actual conversation. Most twitter-clone UIs don’t do a good job of threading and nesting comments in a way that you can easily follow along and have conversations with the people engaged in discussion.
I’m old and like the forum-style interface where people can write out a complete thought, engage in a formatted discussion that’s easy to follow along with, and does so in a way that lets other people easily hop in at any point.
So I’d say it’s less about the idea of unifying platforms on a single identity (which I think is a great idea and firmly agree that having some sort of Fediverse SSO would make this a lot easier of a sell for less technical users) but more that dumping a pile of low-quality content into a place with reasonably good content isn’t actually improving anything.
(I would also qualify this with a comment that I’m old enough that my first “fediverse service” was FidoNet, so I’m reasonably sure I have a different opinion on the value of a well-designed platform for a single specific task vs making one that can do everything for everyone.)
Interesting, thank for sharing your experience. :)
Yes, we need a short of fediverse SSO. I think nomadic account as hubzilla one would fit it nicely. For the SSO, i imagine is as our email address. And the alias are fedi-account. We may guide user to find their server : do you wwrite lenghty or short message ? Are you on phone or PC ? Which UI ddo you prefer ?
Well i often miss forum period because the content was better that was phpbb golden era. I see twitter/mastodon message as a live chat format where you can find someone talking about your interest with hashtag. It’s where i can take a break and share a bit of my life and see what’s going on. Compared to lemmy, i find mastodon more playful.
I use mastodon for political post because of their anoying and useful text limitation. I love debating. The problem is that with some users it ended up to a full scale nuclear wars where i spent lot time write to defend my stance. I’m the kind of guy to believe in police and anarchy, so you understand how it can end up very badly.
The 500 characters help me to keep quiet and don’t fall in a needlessy argumentation. And the fact i didn’t setup as an all-in software allow me to isolate when i need some love. :)
For Iceshrimp, it’s a cross-over between mastodon and lemmy with one of the most beautiful UI. I have 3000 characters and it’s a good balance between lenghty text and short of. I only miss the forum UI.
Two months ago, I spent dozen hours setting up my alts account on peculiar.florist and mastodon...subcription, filters, contacts, keyword alert. They also act as whole a community with topics.
I just want to settle a bit. I moved a lot to mastodon, pixelfed, lemmy, kbin... :)
Just to give you a rough idea, i spent lot time building these list that are a mix of lemmy and mastodon. And when i did that, i configured tusky.
It takes time. If it was one year ago, i would easily change software. For now i'm waiting that fediverse software improve.
As i recall the problem with mastodon and lemmy was tied to activitypub technical side : group and individual.
i talked about kbin, i had an account there one year ago. Last time when i tried kbin, i couldn't find my way, it wasn't pleasant. Mbin probably improved that. so with mbin It is probably a thing of the past but i have to try once.
I know. It was a kbin fork, so if it didn't work well i would be very very sad. 😊
Kbin works very well with Lemmy. (Group)
Mastodon work well with Iceshrimp. (Individual)
However, where it won't work it's when we try to mix individual and group. That's why i do think fediverse software should support both.
For now i have enough account, mainly on iceshrimp where i crosspost to lemmy so i can connect both side and allow people from mastodon to reach us and write to us. 😊
Thank :D
