  • Well, that's what the person you replied to was saying. Essentially the "AI" is only reading the book, it's not copying the book.

I could rewrite the entire Lord of the rings series in my own words and it wouldn't be copyright infringement. I could sit there with the movies on repeat and the books all open for reference, I don't owe the rights holder anything in that case, as long as I'm but reproducing their work.

  • So works derived from other works should not be copyrightable? Oh wait, that's specifically allowed. As long as it's not being reproduced 1:1 then it falls under fair use. The argument that one should get paid for that is absurd. You can't copyright the idea of something. If that were the case then you could never write another poem or novel or short story because someone already did that and to do so would be "stealing." It would be ridiculous.

  • I will say that older Startrek episodes did have the soap opera feel. My guess is that they're trying to avoid looking like a soap opera. To me that means audio as well as visual. They mix soap operas in the lower range at a higher volume for older audiences, cutting out the higher vocal range. It makes it sound like they're in a closet or something.

  • My tinfoil hat says that DuPont/Dow was behind all of that as their patents were about to expire anyway. Now nobody else can produce their products cheaply and they get to sell their new pantended "safe" replacement.

It's funny that when their patent for r-134a ran out they got it phased out for yf-1234.

  • We get those temps on occasion here in the Midwest as well, except it's not dry here, so it feels even hotter. This year we got lucky and had a drought for a month or so and it was cooler because of the Canadian wild fire smoke.

  • I've noticed that the movie and t.v. industry will not tolerate a static shot. They must always be moving the camera around for no apparent reason. Sometimes they just use a jumpcut every half second or so.

I'm not sure if they think it holds the audiences attention better, but I find it extremely distracting and annoying. Maybe I've gotten used to static shots from watching real people do real things on YouTube or whatever. It's like trying to watch a scene on a ship in a storm with these scenes sometimes.

  • Part of the issue with buying an x-box is that there's a limited catalog of games and very few exclusives. MS has to offer something more than just new games. PlayStation is the dominant gaming platform globally and has been for a long time. They want people buying new games at $70/ea. They don't have to incentivise people to come to their platform as much.

  • Too hot? It gets over 100*f in the Midwest with high humidity pretty regularly. Chicago average daily humidity is 70%. But then it's also winter for 6 months straight.

Weather is extremely stable in California, that's why it's a popular place to live.

  • The issue is that you would have a small group of industry insiders telling everyone else to can and can't be a judge. It would also be easier to target people and prevent them from becoming a judge by getting them disbarred through a non-government process.

  • The u.s. government spends more on healthcare per Capita than any other country as well. They give money to private insurance to cover people on public assistance such as the elderly and veterans. They don't pay directly, so there's a ton of administrative bloat.

If we could just cull the insurance companies we could harvest their organs and solve a lot of problems.

  • They built the interstate on the west side of town, so all the pollution blows into town. They built a pork processing plant on the west side of the interstate, so all of the smell blows over the interstate and into town. The main road through town is a state highway with 2 east and two west lanes plus a split turn lane. It goes directly past the high school and near some other schools. Most of the pork trucks come from the east and have to travel all the way through town. There's also two roads that travel north/south that are 2/2 with turn lane, the intersections with the state highway have a lot of accidents. Old downtown is several blocks away from any main road, so nobody goes to any business near them. They have started to focus all development near the interstate, and are trying to get developers to build near the highway, by the pork plant. It's 18 levels of pure stupidity.
