  • This is terrible news, because Scientology holds an absurd amount of power for a trashy cult/scam organization, it's not impossible that they could effectively attack this, given there is enough will within the curch.

  • For example I don't even how to downvote your post. (nor do I want to) Do you need to use a special Lemmy client to gain access to this functionality? Or is this because I'm from Beehaw? Either case, I don't care ^

  • I think a very small percentage of users would justify a purchase on repair-ability & sustainability alone (privacy is not it!), if it does not save them at least a little money in the long run and as things are it does not. If it was just a bit cheaper they could sell 10x as many units & normal people like me would be happy. I think this is reasonable to ask for, yes the phone is more expensive to make, but software support is not nearly as expensive as you think. Android is very easy to update and port these days, sure it's like 4 engineer salaries to keep some degree of testing running alongside development, but if they sold more devices, then the relative cost would go way down.

Then again, if they can maintain profitability by targeting that niche market it's good for them, I just wish someone took 'right to repair' & 'right to own' to the masses.

  • This is a pretty great phone, I just wouldn't spend this much on a phone. Even if it lasts let's say 6 years, I can buy 3-4 mid range androids at this price & as the years go by they could be far better than this one near the end.

Also while Iphones are really hard to repair, they do last very long & there are people out there who can replace my iphone battery for like $40 and it too would last 5-6 years. (a recent enough refurbished SE for example)

  • I just reached the underdark, the only annoyance I've had is that I totally misunderstood my fellow party member's intent with wanting to show me something & I had to reload my last save to avoid a gay romance I had no interest in being.

  • I doubt you would need any tips, also right now Bookworm is closer to upstream than Ubuntu, so it's better fit for gaming sans some niche missing package scenarios that won't matter if you heavily rely on flatpaks.

The only major thing Ubuntu has over Debian is the normie friendly graphical , but it's not great so /shrug .

Also Canonical is not going to pull the plug, that's one thing you don't really have to worry about, unless they sell the company.

  • The problem is manufactures are doing everything to sabotage users running custom roms on their devices. Frankly everything you highlight exists already, though there are very difficult problems on the image processing front. Personally I would much rather use a full Linux distribution on a phone, than AOSP without the play store.

Also micro G is not a solution. Having a desktop browser to access drive, docs and photos could be, especially if there were some unique rendering options for those things. (microG is bad, because Google can break it at their leisure)

  • Unless the application specifically demands it, there is no point to use these over Debian. If Debian is lacking in something (a package is missing and cannot be fixed for example), then the answer is almost never going to be a Rhel clone. (Fedora could be)

  • It's an inflatable tank, of course it's not going to be cheap, but it could totally be a good product. I bought my nephews inflatable crocs, they are still in service after 3 years of frequent public pool/lake use.

I found this quite common actually, an absolutely ridiculous description behind an actual good product that is.
