  • It definitely smells like that, except maybe just anti-"woke" or anti-minorities instead of just anti-women?

  • I'm with you. Even YouTube is classified as social media (which I guess it gets closer to with shorts and comments and everything). I definitely think that, this, and Facebook are categorically different, even if they're all "social media"

  • Same. Except it's usually more, like, verify an obscure fact or something.

  • No, no, no, no, no.

Not no claim. Just... No legal claim.

  • Of the finished property, probably. A property with a giant, abandoned project on it isn't worth nearly as much.

  • You know that old E=mcΒ² equation? That's actually only the simplified "rest" half of it. The full equation that relativity gives us says EΒ²=mΒ²c⁴+pΒ²cΒ². Meaning if it has energy, it definitely has mass (m), momentum (p), or both.

For a massless particle like a photon, that means E=pc, and its momentum is proportional to its energy and therefore frequency/wavelength.

  • They're just going to write all the articles in lojban.

  • Okay I did some math. If the gun shot a single photon with all the energy of a .50BMG from an M2 heavy machine gun, it would have about 1.2e-4 Ns of momentum. For reference, the bullet it's compared to would have 38.3 Ns. So the photon has about 32000 times less momentum than a bullet. Do with that what you will.

  • I know it's playing the syntactic role of a noun, that's what I said. But it's playing the semantic role of a descriptor. The "thing" being described here is a suspect, one that is white and also male, as opposed to a male who is white and also suspected.

Syntactically, the word male was a noun. But semantically, it's still just describing the suspect, rather than identifying the thing to be described.

  • He's not quite as bad as all that. He's an ass, but he's self aware enough to at least see when he'll be perceived as the unreasonable one and back off. I honestly don't have much of a relationship with him at all at this point, beyond saying hi and bye. My family has what most would consider a big get together every week, my nine siblings mostly showing up with their double digits of kids, all hanging out and having dinner. Without that, I lose a rather large portion of my small introverted social circle.

Mostly, I'll stick with going when I'm comfortable and leaving when I feel disrespected. It's shitty, but it's something. And I can continue growing my circle elsewhere too. Joined a game night group, I see my friends from next city over every now and again. I'll do okay.

  • Yeah, but if I ask a third grader which way is right, they'll know and they won't be able to tell you why. This is normal.

  • It's called "capitalism". You should avoid it if you can.

  • I mean, the US medical system is terrible in basically every way, but it's nice to know it's worse than everyone else in this particular way, too.

I expect there's probably the "rich folks" version of your open asylums that are marketed like "mental health retreats" or something and cost as much as a house, but generally if you don't have the luxury of shopping around reviews for the hospitals you're staying at, you'd just wind up in a "closed" one here. And the person who needs to check in because otherwise they know they won't eat for a week probably isn't checking reviews.

  • Because fluent speakers of a language know the rules even if they don't understand them. Why can you have a big green dog but not a green big dog? Because that's the way the language works.

  • Frenchwoman and Frenchperson are both ridiculous enough to try, but maybe go with Frenchie just to see if they'll punch you.

  • QuΓ©bΓ©cois then.

  • Welcome to language my friend. Always has, always will.

  • Because the police never try to dehumanize "suspects" and "perpetrators".
