  • I don't see why people are so against the developer using ads. If you don't like them, you can remove them yourself with an adblocker, you don't need the dev to do that. If you consider ads an ethical violation, you shouldn't see using an adblocker as unethical.

  • I have not seen the film yet, but it seems like this is a biopic about Oppenheimer, not a WWII movie.

Also, do directors need to infantilize their audience by directly showing "this was bad. Here is why this was bad"? Like, obviously the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were devastating. If you have basic history knowledge you should already know that, and know that those bombings were a direct consequence from what was depicted in the movie with out it being spelled out for you.

  • No, he was caught jerking off in a porn theater and charged with public indecency. In my opinion the whole thing was blown out of proportion and a stain on his legacy that doesn't deserve to be there. People just hear "sex crimes" and "children's performer" and come to that assumption. (No shade to you, its a fair assumption. I more have a problem with how the media handled it at the time)

  • Just FYI it is possible to open links in Firefox despite Voyager being installed as a Chrome PWA. Click the link to open it within the app, then hit the 3 dots and "Open in Firefox" should be an option.

  • Prime Energy, which has come under scrutiny in other countries, contains 200 milligrams of caffeine per can or the equivalent of six cans of Coke or two Red Bulls.

...or one large coffee. This is deceptive wording.

Why is Starbucks exempt from these rules? A lot of their drinks would definitely exceed 180mg of caffeine.

  • I dunno dude, your average uploader might not be making a ton off AdSense, but the large creators that bring in the majority of users are making bank. The sponsers and Patreons are there to diversify income streams, as Google is notororiously prone to mashing the demonetization button. There are billions of dollars flowing through YouTube, and I don't think that a decentralized platform running on volunteers and donations is going to be able to compete with that.

Overall I think you're being unrealistic with the Fediverses place in social media, and overly optimistic about the future of it. I doubt the platform will ever have true mass appeal, which is fine.

  • I think this is more of a novelty/proof-of-concept rather than offering any serious use case. It does show a lot of potential for this kind of thing. If the form-factor can be refined into something less stupid looking, there could be more appeal in this tech to the general public than there was in 2013. There seems to be more of a collective shrug towards cameras and microphones in public than there was 10 years ago.

  • I mean yeah, it would be good, and maybe make it larger, but reddit has 100 million MAU and we have less than 1% of that. They're not wrong that moving would massively impact their reach. I don't think 99+ million people will move for AskHistorians.

  • They did make a post about it, Lemmy is no where near large enough for them to be interested. Their mission is to showcase history on a large public platform.

They said they are not happy with how the company has acted, but it would take a much bigger issue to get them to consider moving.

  • Currently the FMHY lemmy instance is down, they will likely create a new one at lemmy.fmhy.net in the coming days. You can create an account on any Mastodon instance (for example, mastodon.social), search for the user @fmhy@very.bignutty.xyz, and follow them for updates on when it will be up and how to register.
