Russia is provoked by weakness and deterred by strength
This appears to be a disturbingly common idea in the west. And I would argue it translates a little bit different. It translates into a notion that we are barbarians. Think about it, what comes to mind when you hear "They only respect strength"? Some type of Hollywood-esque brain-dead loudmouth barbarian, who only knows violence, bullies the weak and only backs down against superior might (usually that of the designated protagonist). That is the perception they have.
Apologies, I should have specified yankee media - since that is what dominates the world media. But also on the topic of flinging crap at the socialist times - we get that as well in Russia. Not just in media, as you mentioned - the term "Sovok" is used as a derogatory for things people dislike and (usually erroneously) associate with USSR. Ya know, such obviously socialist concepts as bureaucracy, employers monitoring every move a worker makes and punishing them for time off, unpaid overtime, etc
It's been raining since Saturday. The city is drowning, and it's not really a hyperbole. We've gotten almost twice the monthly norm of rain in three days. Several routes of public transport have been suspended. Cars are breaking down mid-road, because water gets under the hood.
Well it's the ruling class that writes history. It's not just ancient past, very recent past as well - just think of all the nostalgia cropping up for 1950's or 1980's!
There’s no point causing war for profit if you can’t make the profit
Allow me to disagree a bit. There remains a point to prevent the others from industrialization and general rise. It won't make profit by itself, but it remains a big reason for war
There's a video circulating around the net, featuring a man with both hands cut off. Allegedly it was done by rioters in France and the man was "trying to protect his car". Anyone hear anything about that?

And of course it is largely projection.
