  • I think the phrase "low-traffic" is problematic, because it sounds like "fewer people will visit my shop!".

In reality, this type of infrastructure increases human traffic... real people doing real things in their community... by blocking off large vehicles.

Every community should want MORE of these neighbourhoods.

  • Is it easy to set up SSL on a PiHole? I wanted to get Adguard home setup (similar to Pihole) but the complexity of setting up secure connections and I'm like, "yeah, nobody in my family is going to be able to fix this if something happens when I'm not around". 😂

  • For context, I have a single Synology NAS, so recovering and testing the entire backup set would not be practical in my case.

I have been able to test single files or entire folders and they work fine, but obviously I'd have no way of testing the entire backup set due to the above consideration. It is my understanding that the verify feature that Synology uses is to ensure that there's no bit rot and that the file integrity is intact. My hope is that because of how many isolated backups I do keep, the chance of not being able to recover is slim to none.

  • If it's an indoor production using grow lights, there would be no light pollution outside:

More traditional greenhouses with transparent ceilings can be operated in a way that mitigates light pollution.

It's a relevant concern, but not a dealbreaker.

  • We should absolutely move as much as we can into greenhouse production. We already do this with hot house tomatoes. And it's easy to transition into other different forms of produce, especially greens.

It saves on land, it cuts the use of pesticides and fertilizers, it reduces the chance of foodborne illness, and maintains secure food production throughout every season. It's quite literally a no-brainer, we just have to invest.

  • But why even jump to that conclusion? They could have said "may cause baldness", too.

I mean, they come up a list of things, but proved none of it: "Chemicals in everyday plastics may disrupt the body’s natural 24-hour sleep-wake cycle and circadian rhythm in a way similar to coffee, which increases the risk of sleep disorders, diabetes, immune problems and cancer, new in vitro research shows."

I just wish that journalists would be a little less sensationalist with stuff like this. Even if it were an animal-based study, assumptions should be tempered when it comes to reporting on the implications to human health.

Not to criticize the study, since we really do need to know how these plastics are harming us, but the headlines need to chill out.

  • Yes, it will lead to other studies, but the headline suggests that "Plastics in everyday objects may disrupt sleep in same way as caffeine..." as if they actually compared plastic exposure to caffeine in living people through a sleep study.

    Seems like a huge assumption.

I say this, because in vitro studies can point to very wrong, absurdly misleading conclusions. For example, avocado extract appears to damage human chromosomes... in vitro. But when consumed, it's healthy, and may even be cancer-protective.

  • Any priest who complies with a new law requiring the reporting of child abuse confessions to authorities will be excommunicated.

Oh, are we going to play that game?

Why does the Catholic Church have to be so fucking evil?

  • It's not even that this is a privacy violation that bothers me (because it does), but the fact that people are getting rich off of our private, personal data is infuriating.

I can't stand that the most corrupt, unethical, evil, criminal, immoral people among us are the ones getting rich and living comfortable lives. It's sickening.

  • But, have you disabled any power saving features both from the manufacturer and the OS?

Yes, and all permissions have been granted. I think it's just buggy as another person posted about similar issues.

I wonder if something like LineageOS would be suitable for you?

I used LineageOS many years ago, but my current phone isn't well supported by any third-party ROM, and I'm not really interested in changing up the OS until at least after the warranty period is up.

  • 300mw of solar would be between 1,500 and 3,000 acres of land. 300mw SMR could be as low as 10-20 acres.

In that context, it may still be better to plan for solar panels on all roofs in new developments.

Just taking one example of Whitby, Ontario, which only has a population of around 140,000. Using a quick and dirty measurement of the developed area from the waterfont to Taunton Rd., there's over 12,000 acres of area used up by mostly homes and other buildings (schools, retail, etc.).

You may not even need to have EVERY roof covered to meet the demands of a municipality like that. This makes it even more compelling because you have room to expand the capacity, if needed. And it still comes with the benefit of having multiple redundancies, being self-sustainable, offering residents free or extremely low-cost electricity (or even be paid to put energy back into the grid!), etc.

Anyway, this fantasy is unlikely to happen in Ontario. LOL

  • Rather unfortunately, my phone doesn't have good custom ROM support, but I generally don't have a problem re: worrying about spyware for a few reasons:

    1. It's been pretty easy to replace stock apps with privacy-friendly and/or FOSS alternatives.
    2. Nearly all stock apps on my phone can be disabled, which I've done for essentially all google/Oneplus apps.
    3. I run a tracker blocker (Adguard) on my phone, and it blocks anything built into the OS. And, for apps like Google Photos, I can block all internet access and use the app "offline" for the features I need.
    4. I'm happy with the user experience I get out of my phone, so I'm not motivated to really change the entire OS.

That said, I'm happy to hear that LineageOS is still a thing! I was using it many years ago, and I'm sure it's only gotten better since then.
