  • ? Pretty sure that’s not what they said.

They said that there are people on Lemmy who think a person who stabs someone vs a person who doesn’t are morally equivalent—as long as they’re both poor.

    Very different.

They did also say that there are poor people who stab others and blame their actions on being poor, but that was tangential to their main point about judging the morals of a person solely based on their wealth or lack thereof.

  • The line is usually ‘where the majority party in Congress thinks it is’. That’s why even though they got impeached, none of those presidents left; look at which party was in charge at the time.

Make no mistake; the Republicans could have him out on his ass and facing criminal charges before you could blink if they wanted to. They don’t want to, because he’s doing exactly what they want him to do. 40-odd percent of Americans also think this is great.

And so, yes, he could shoot someone in Times Square and totally get away with it.

That’s the real problem. Trump and fascism are symptoms, not the cause. If the disease wasn’t there, like it wasn’t with Nixon (or at least, it was just starting to develop then), none of this would be an issue.

  • All these ‘it’s dropping!’ articles are just bullshit. It’s been in the 42-46% pretty much since he took office.

I think this is just rhetoric aimed at the left. ‘See, his popularity is fading! No need to worry and definitely no need to do anything about him!’

Kinda like the right gets ‘See, everyone loves him; he won on the popular vote and now he’s doing all the things you wanted him to! Remember to support him unconditionally!’

  • Because that’s not how the military works.

And in the end, it isn’t up to them. Trump won the popular vote. Not by much, but he’s in the White House legally and legitimately. Doesn’t matter what his ‘popularity ratings’ are now. We The People put him there, and We The People are the ones responsible for removing him.

Do you really want the military to decide ‘I know the majority of y’all voted for this, but we’ve decided we don’t like that, so we’re overthrowing the government’ for anything?

  • The shine hasn’t worn off a bit. He’s polling pretty much exactly where he’s been throughout this presidential run; in the 44-46% support.

Almost half the country still supports him, and loves him, tariffs, destroying the constitution, and all.

  • Um, no?

He’s still staying firmly in the 44-46% range, where he’s been since he was elected. The needle movements have been so small there’s a good chance they’re just rounding errors.

Biden was at 33% at one point. Harry Truman managed to hit 22%. Nixon was at 23% when he left office.

All this ‘Trump’s ratings went down half a point! The honeymoon is over! He’s the worst president ever!’ is absolute bullshit, and I’m tired of it. It’s designed to make us on the left feel like people agree with us. Probably so we’ll complacently wait for everyone to agree to help us get him out of office.

Almost half the country is still thrilled with what Trump is doing. We are charging headlong into fascism with a good chunk of the country cheering it on. And those cheering masses are not going to ‘wake up’ and change our minds about it.

  • There’s no reason to be afraid of Opiliones. Their mouthparts are the wrong shape and too small to do harm to a human. Also, unlike spiders, there are no known Opiliones with venom. Their chelicerae are for grasping only.

  • True wisdom is understanding how much you don’t know! And to a certain extent what you say is true.

But, as Bill Watterson once said, ‘most ignorance is willful’. Quite a lot of people don’t want to look into things more than surface level, because it’s too much work, and too scary to step outside of their comfort zones.

And, y’know, I’d be kind of fine with that? Except their ignorance is actively hurting people.

And then, sadly, there’s a lot of people who are just bullies, and use their ignorance to prop up their fragile egos. A friend of mine has been disowned by her family because she’s trans. They refuse to speak to her, and have been cheering on Trump’s deportations and treatment of trans folks.

What do you even do with people like that?

  • Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

They actually are quite logical and unswerving in their beliefs. They believe the above quote is how the world should be, and that they should be in the first group, because obviously they are special.

If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.
