  • Not just that but the feeds are indexed in many directories (if the hosts decide to, but most do) so you can just find it in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or „wherever you get your podcasts from“ and instantly start listening. If you would need to go to a website, copy the feed URL and paste it into your client, that would already be fine for nerds but not very convenient. Which is why regular website RSS feeds are not as popular (and also because they are often shitty, on purpose).

  • So all Podcasts are bad because this one particular example was stupid? Why did you feel the need to bring that up? What you described you can find plenty in books, magazines or everywhere else.

There are all kinds of podcasts for all kinds of interests. And the best thing is that people like you and me can make and publish them. I dislike many podcasts because they are superficial, loud, hectic or whatever but there are many others that just work for me.

I usually listen to them while on a run, in the car or to fall asleep to.

Unfortunately I don’t have recommendations for you because most of my subscribed podcasts are German* and the others are in the „fall asleep to“ category of men talking about tech. But if you’re interested in the latter, start at atp.fm or something on the relay.fm network.

*if you are German speaking, I’ll gladly give recommendations

  • Whatever you do, make it a challenge to do it every day (or as often as possible) for a month. If at the end you still look forward to it, you found a new hobby.

It might help to set some fixed times in your week for hobbys so you don’t get into the situation where you need to decide between that or Netflix. The drug always wins.

If you need to buy some things first, get it used or even just lend it but try to find something that’s not rubbish. You can later invest more money but you don’t want to waste it on something you end up not liking.

    Hobbys that stuck with me:

    • cooking
    • running
    • hiking
    • gardening
    • golfing
    • reading
    • jigsaw puzzles
  • Google was WAY to early and severely limited in what it could do. A tiny display in the corner of the eye is just not getting anyone excited. And because it was Google who made it, it was also creepy.

Of course you won’t be running around the city with a Vision in the near future like Casey. The long term plan is to shrink it down to just regular glasses (or even implants) but you need to have an actual product first which people can use at home or at work now and in which they can see even more potential. The ecosystem and OS is already good. It’s easy to see how this can work.

  • 1 with memory foam. I sleep sideways and on the back. I hate it when pillows are too thin or fluffy but too high is also not good on the neck.

Hijacking this: Can someone answer me why Ikea mainly sells these huge square pillows? They are so uncomfortable to sleep on but they have the nicest pillowcases.

  • He was not against paying for the API. The prices Reddit asked for were just insane and he could not have continued Apollo with an optional subscription. Youtube Premium is also optional. The fact that Apollo did not show ads was Reddits „fault“.

  • I was a total film buff. I watched every special, bought limited editions, even imports from Japan because the cut was different. I went to festivals, studied film techniques, watched 3-4 movies a week, old and new. It’s all gone. I don’t know, it was kinda pushed away by other hobbies and stopped being as interesting to me. Which is a bit sad because there are still amazing and obscure movies coming out. Now I watch 1, maybe 2 a week and I sometimes have to push myself to do that.

  • I used to collect movies on DVD/Bluray but kinda fell out of love with it thanks to streaming, taking up room and being annoying when moving places. They are not worth anything so I don’t want to go through the trouble of selling, so I’m throwing away the cases and put the discs in CD organizers to make them more compact. Most of the labels got sunbleached anyways.

It’s a bit sad. I mean some films are not and will never be available on streaming but overall this became just a nuisance.
