  • Run for president on what platform? Genuinely, was he planning on running against Trump or against Biden?

Because both parties see him as a traitor. To Democrats, he was the lone senator blocking pivotal congressional action for years. To Republicans, he's been sleeping with the enemy and pushed out what would have otherwise been a guaranteed seat in the senate so he could be a "compromise Democrat".

So like.. Who was he going to impress?

  • He's going to try to stiff the court. I'd bet money on it. He's going to hide behind his lawyers and try to claim the law doesn't apply the same way to an ex president. Just to delay long enough for the election.

The real test of our democracy will be whether or not they just arrest him when he tries that.

  • In the same way that Biden is preferable to Trump. Biden is far from perfect, has lukewarm political leanings, only advances soft-left policies to better his own election chances and keeps a cop as a vp.

But Trump is an actual war mongering lunatic wannabe fascist. Sometimes it's about the lesser evil.

Yes, you could say there are plenty of people more worth supporting than these two old farts, but none of them are on the ballot are they?

It's that situation with Russia. Putin is an actual, proven warmonger who kills his own countrymen to hold on to power. Someone who doesn't do either of those things and respects the will of the people is a step up, regardless of their politics, because that person can be voted out.

  • Came here wondering if anyone said mcds. Everything about that place has gotten worse over the last 5 years or so. It wasn't that great to begin with. The only redeeming factor was that it was cheaper than many places, but now it's garbage and expensive.

I haven't considered mcds since the covid shut down, and even then I'd been off it for years.

  • Nope. Just means that Republicans are going to switch back to anti Russia suddenly and without a reason except "he said democrats are good"

In reality, putler's entire strategy for the US has been to create discord and chaos and bank on the fact that we'll be too paralyzed as a country to properly react to the things Russia does.

  • but perhaps somebody would care to tell me what is wrong with my theory?

    I'll give it a shot.

First off, any payoff from Russia investing in NATO defense is massively offset by the untold damage this war is doing to Russia's economy and population. This still holds true if it's just putin's investment, although if he were really bent on profit from that he probably could. But there are other, more lucrative and less damaging avenues to profit for a guy with as much money as he has.

Secondly, the war isn't pointless. Occams razor suggests the simplest reason is often the truth. The simplest reason is that Crimea provides Russia a western seaport that isn't frozen half of the year, and taking eastern Ukraine provides a path to that port.

  • I immediately recognized it as the same thing my dad did for awhile after he got his. Dentures lower the roof of your mouth a bit, so you have to get used to it and your mouth still tries to fall back on muscle memory for awhile, so you get weird sounding S's.

    I think it's this.

  • Because they have to. It's decades of conservative media concealing reality finally coming to fruition.

Conservatives genuinely believe democrats are ushering in fascism, because their politicians tell them so constantly. Trump may not be pretty or even coherent, but he offers a perceived anti-establishment position in a country where corruption has clearly (to them) infected every crevice.

They see Trump as their savior. They couldn't be further from the truth. But their media has done untold damage to them and managed to convince them over the span of about 50 years that the US is constantly on the brink of destruction.

  • It’s the unwillingness to remember and learn about the system

You hit the nail on the head. People assume that entry level software or hardware stuff gives way to calculus before they can actually solve their problem, so they don't even try.

  • That may be true. That doesn't change the fact that it's markedly less likely that some gay kids are going to be bullied. Or that some homosexual couples are going to be denied a marriage certificate.

You seem to be missing the forest for the trees.

Anyway, this discussion is pointless. I'm out

  • Ok, so a heavily bigoted organization with their fingers in governments across the globe is better to you? The Vatican isn't going away buddy.

What you're saying is essentially that you'd rather a completely evil and corrupt organization influencing global politics than a reasonable but still immoral and slightly more popular organization doing the same.

Either way, this argument doesn't matter. I don't care for catholics either. It's a whole other thing to actively sneer at the group for adopting more tolerant policies.

    Have fun with that.

    1. A black market would arise. Finished with your show? Get your money back. NFTs aren't connected to identity like that.
    2. They could never pull a stunt like what they're doing now and make people rebuy things.
    3. Advertising opportunity would essentially fall to zero. Ever notice how ads play before and after streaming services nowadays?
    4. A subscription model wouldn't work under this system. Subscriptions pull in a higher net than single selling products.

The current system would be overturned in its entirety by something like this, and that's why the people making money and holding the rights aren't going to let it happen.
