  • Autistic people deserve love too.

  • They'll just make legal carveouts for government and commercial use, and go after consumer-facing VPN providers that refuse to comply. For VPN providers based outside the US, they could delist their websites from DNS or block their IPs. They can't stop someone who's determined from finding a way, of course, but just a few simple barriers prevents most people from putting in the effort.

  • I know you're all going to have to get this out of your system, so go ahead. Mock the leftists who stubbornly refused to vote for Kamala. Assign the blame for fascism taking over on those who could not see past their principles to the bigger picture (at least, as you see it). Eventually, you're going to have to move on and acknowledge that the blame cannot fall solely on them.

I voted for Kamala Harris. I, like most of you, felt strongly that doing so was necessary to prevent a far worse outcome. In the short term. The truth is, those that you mock for failing to see what was so plain to you were looking past it to an even larger picture, and that is why they could not see the strategic necessity of their vote. Why they chose not to see it, just as many of you choose not to see something that is very plain to them, the inevitability of this outcome.

Kamala Harris began her campaign to thunderous applause from those who were hopeful that the Democratic Party was finally embracing progressive ideals, only to then abandon and insult those very same hopefuls while moving further to the right than even Biden dared go. Kamala Harris then also proceeded to approach the economically anxious right with the same limp-wristed and tired economic messaging that has consistently failed to address the concerns of the working class. She campaigned as a moderate old Republican, the very same that the Republican electorate abandoned in favor of Trump.

A large number of progressives and radical leftists saw this and surrendered. They sacrificed their hope for change and reform to preserve their principles, and embraced accelerationism where previously they resisted it. I felt what they felt but held onto hope not because I truly believed Kamala Harris would turn around, but because I feared that we were not ready. I voted for Kamala Harris because I wanted to buy just a little more time, but fascism is here now, and we've run out of time.

Accept responsibility, stop assigning blame, we can't afford to. Accept responsibility not because you are at fault, but because no one else will.

Roughly equal number of upvotes and downvotes on this one, commented on a thread in c/meanwhileongrad bashing some random tankies after the election for abstaining or voting 3rd party. I stand by it.

    Context.

  • It might help people to see some local journalistic coverage of Cuban elections. Seeing the kinds of things Cubans say publicly about and during the elections can give people a more intuitive understanding of what Cuban democracy is actually like for the people participating in it, as well as start to reveal the outlines of the overton window there.

Journalism is my preferred medium for understanding the political landscape of other countries; for an example I like to watch friendlyjordies on youtube for a peek into Australian politics. I'm not sure if it would be very easy to find English translated Cuban sources though.

  • Yep, I'm a total hypocrite for defending a left-wing social media platform from your sealioning and concern trolling while the majority of platforms are undergoing a fascist takeover. If you want more diversity of opinion on lemmy then let it grow and the diversity will grow with it. Just don't be surprised when a consensus forms among those who are fleeing fascist platforms.

  • What is it exactly that you're proposing lemmy mods do differently then? Do you believe that moderate alternative views are being broadly censored across lemmy? If not, and it's just downvotes and "groupthink" you're complaining about, then just state your "reasonable and moderate" disagreements and let the votes fall where they may. Your alternative views are not entitled to approval, and downvotes are not censorship.

  • Skyrim was baby's first RPG for a lot of people. Lots of people played it that didn't really expect or were interested in engaging with moral complexity in their games, to the extent that it really existed in Skyrim.

  • If you're going to be venturing out into coyote country alone you should at least be able to differentiate them from dogs. Not safe for you or the coyotes.

  • we know now that it was the Bolsheviks, and their adherance to strong theoretical study and working class organization that led to successful revolution.

To give an example, I disagree on this. Now, if you were to approach this discussion under the pretense that my disagreement is based on poor understanding of history or of theory, that would be pretentious, and therefore unproductive if you actually want to change my mind. Instead, keep an open mind and be willing to entertain an alternative perspective.

In my opinion, the Bolsheviks were oppurtunists who co-opted the revolutionary fervor in order to centralize power and influence in the movement under their control. They did indeed use Marxist theory to guide and justify their actions, but that doesn't make it right. I understand that Marxist theory advocates for the centralization of power and control, I just disagree with it, which is a view more in line with Trotskyites than Marxist-Leninists.

I'm not trying to say that you are particularly arrogant or pretentious, but Marx and especially Lenin certainly were, and that is reflected in their work.

  • You can try acknowledging that people have actual differences of opinion instead of referring to different ideological tendencies as a result of poor understanding. Doesn't really help your cause to always come across as pretentious and arrogant, even to people who would otherwise be your allies.

  • Is it though? Or is that just what racists who don't think they're racist like to tell themselves because they believe in pseudoscience with embedded racism?

  • Journalists are being systematically killed in both Gaza and the West Bank. We know for a fact that more journalists have been killed in this conflict than have died in the last 10 years of wars and conflicts. We're past the point of scrutinizing every detail and nuance of a single journalist's death before passing a verdict. It is clear that even if they are not intentionally targeting journalists, they certainly don't seem to care if they happen to keep shooting them.

  • So I'm not a medical professional, and I didn't speak out of an abundance of caution while making an offhanded comment on a shitpost. Sue me.

  • And conversely, not everyone is you. Weed has particularly variable effects, I know it might not work for my grandma, but as I see it it's worth a shot if the alternative is opiates. She's only unwilling to try it because she grew up being lied to about cannabis and thinks it will make her crazy. She's even afraid of CBD.

  • Honestly wish I could convince my grandma that weed would be better for managing her arthritis pain than the opiates her doctor has her hooked on.

  • When everything is propaganda, to say so is meaningless. Think more deeply and discover what particular flavor of propaganda you're reading today.

  • Meanwhile the Democratic Party refuses to change and is losing its base, allowing the right wing to dominate the narrative. I don't know what's going to happen, but the optimistic side of me hopes there will finally be a left populist resurgence, just as the right wing is losing its grip.

  • I think the right-wing made a mistake engaging in populism. They've politically activated millions of people and are starting to lose control of the narrative. I might be mistaken, but I've been getting the feeling that the MAGA folks are becoming increasingly receptive to left-wing populist arguments.

Even Steve Bannon of all people responded to the H-1B visa drama with a left-wing populist argument, where he said foreign workers who came here on H-1B visas were treated like indentured servants.
