  • Even as a tax right-off it costs money. For instance about ⅓ of my income goes to taxes, so every $100 I donate to charity results in me saving about $33 in taxes. So a $100 donation only costs me about $67. It still costs me, and it still costs companies real money who make charitable contributions. They should be recognized for it.

  • To add to this I read years ago how the English phase "fuck you" got associated with the gesture. It comes The Hundred Years War between Britian and France and was originally "Pluck You!" but changed over time.

This was the first search result and shares the story well: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=PLUCK%20YOU

  • Just looked at the app's permission settings on my phone... set to only allow location while being used.

Like you I don't see much use for the app, though the notifications can be handy if you want to know when a load us finished and you can't hear it's beeps. I work out of my basement with my washer upstairs so that can be the case with me. But still rare that I ever use it.

  • But we the public may pay the price. A prolonged government shutdown won't resolve itself positively. Having an angry, unreasonable Rep in charge could be a disaster for the country, and there's no telling who'll cave in first in such a horrible game of chicken. I'd bet the Dems and if so, it won't be good for the country.

  • Just like McCarthy's ouster was nothing to cheer for. Sure, he was a horrible person in many ways but less horrible than his replacement. Even though I understood why the Democrats were tempted to go along with it due to the sheer stupidity of the Republicans, at least McCarthy understood there needed to be compromise to get anything done. Dems shouldn't have participated in his ouster, and shouldn't probably in Johnson's case either. His replacement will likely be worse.

Be careful what you wish for.

  • They don't really avoid taxes now. Anything tip charged to a card gets taxed. Cash tips might not be claimed but that's very little for most tipped workers. Additionally tipped workers paid below minimum wage make the employer responsible for making up the difference if they don't have enough tips reported to avg min wage. That means the employers are very motivated to ensure their employee tips are reported.

Also, even years ago when cash tips were a significant % of tips, being predominantly low wage workers those employees would get virtually all their taxes back after filing a return as well. They wouldn't get SS taxes back but otherwise for most not reporting tips didn't amount to a lot of missed taxes. There were some exceptions where people made decent money - maybe high end restaurants and salons - but today with little cash use there aren't many taxes missed.

  • We do have a water softener. I might look into the pod/softener thing but we were using Cascade pods and now using Cascade detergent for the most part, though we also use Finish as well, depending what's on sale, etc.

Whatever the case I'm not going back to pods. I've kept some of the filmed glasses but can't find anything to get it off so they look awful.

  • Exactly. This guy working to 65 because he's been tricked, not because he needs to.

Dude, most of us would stop working if we could, and those that would keep working would only be doing it because they enjoy it. Nobody's getting tricked into working longer.

  • My wife started buying and using name brand pods for some reason and after about a year we started noticing a film build up on the glasses. Clear glasses made it very noticeable but it's not noticeable on solid color dishes. Finally occurred to me maybe it's the pods... we switched back to basic detergent and add rinse agent to the dispenser and now a year later new, identical glasses we bought still show no film.

Wish i could figure out how to get the existing film off our old glasses.

  • You didn't read the article did you?

They cite multiple factors but the largest seems to be a change to the way Medicare rebates are paid. Starting Jan 1st, this move allows them to pay less rebates to Medicare based on how they're calculated and will save the companies millions. So yes... it's actually directly based on the Biden administration changes.

  • Just because you can injest something safely doesn't mean it's safe to inject. Your stomach acid and enzymes kill many pathogens in low concentrations so the fact that you can't safely inject tap water doesn't necessarily reflect badly on the water.

Additionally I'm sure the water facet used to get the tap water wasn't sterilized either. You wouldn't want to touch a syringe to your water spigot before using it I'm sure, let alone inject the unsterilized water from it.
