  • He's here... why does it matter?

I came here because my favorite app, Sync for Reddit, died like the other 3rd party apps. I still use reddit some because the groups I was a part of there don't really exist here, or not with much volume anyway. Ketorecipes for instance... if I want to see new recipes frequently, I gotta go to reddit, but I wouldn't if their content was being x-posted. If I post a recipe it'll be here but in a recipes forum, like many other subject types, you're more commonly a reader than a content maker. I have no doubt the small community here will grow eventually but for now it's limited by the low subscriber/contributer count.

Can Lemmy be more/different than reddit? Sure. Can Lemmy be similar to, a replacement for and yet better than reddit? Absolutely.

  • She trusted me as a friend and really loved the asshole. I knew him a lot longer than she did and really couldn't stand the guy, and I don't think he liked me either, but she didn't know that. I was dating someone else too, but my gf didn't compare to her.

Funny thing is she'd tell me about their arguments and disputes and 90% of the time, she was in the wrong and I'd tell her that. I couldn't believe I was defending him but I was honest and she appreciated my sharing a dude's perspective. He followed her to college, and I don't think he'd have even went if not for her, and they got married after. Still married now 30+ years later. I can only believe he grew into a much better man than he seemed to be as a kid, and I'm glad I didn't interfere with their relationship. I eventually found my soul-mate and best friend so wouldn't change a thing, but I can't help but wonder how things might have played out in some alternate universe.

  • I'm a registered Republican and there is no comparison between the two. Trump and the GOP's continuous refusal to call out Trump out for any of his lies and crimes, it's constant spewing of hateful rhetoric and shameless hypocrisy have put our democracy at risk. It's magnitudes worse than what the Democrats have done or are doing and I'm refusing to vote for any GOP candidate at this point until there's a drastic change.

I'll take any Democrat whose policies I don't agree with because we can vote them out later if we dont like the results. I will not vote for a GOP candidate that doesn't call out both Trump and the rest of the rot currently present in the Republican party because they're a threat to immigrants, minorities, the non-rich and our Democracy itself even if they're only silent.

  • I have a sister that's the same.

I would have never guessed she'd fall victim to such a thing... she's intelligent and Trump prior to running for election was the type of person she'd despise. I don't know what happened. It's like the person I knew got taken over by a sick, alien virus that's destroyed the person I remember. She's angry, condescending and downright hateful to anyone that tries to talk to her about the lies and real evidence she ignores. It's sad, and I miss the sister I remember.

  • Share your peer reviewed papers and research that disagree... the ones that have you convinced.

I mean a PhD in particle physics doesn't make you an expert on climate physics any more than my degree make me one, and as you've said plenty of people with plenty of degrees have come to differing opinions. The majority of climate researchers do agree that climate change is real, but if you post the sources that have you convinced, I'll read them as I'm sure some others will.

  • Also worth noting... even if we knew for a fact she had no serious intend to carry out her threat - like if there was a recording before and after she hung up the phone laughing about this "prank" - threats on the lives of government officials are crimes. It can influence their behavior. There is no situation where it's not serious, just like standing up on a plane and yelling "I have a bomb!" is a crime and serious whether a joke or not.

  • There are plenty of things we could've done better in our exit to give the country a chance, and we certainly could have done better by the in country allies that we promised help immigrating to the US and then abandoned. That alone has damaged our future conflicts and our ability to encourage locals to help our soldiers on the ground. Our failures and things we should have done different have been discussed plenty by people far more knowledgeable than you and I.

You keep being an angry, absolutist know-it-all though. That's what we love about you!

It's "sunk cost fallacy" btw. Maybe you should look it up.

  • We don't know. What we do know is the military leaders knew this was going to be a disaster and we'd basically be turning the country back over to the Talaban. What's worse than 15+ years of time, money and lives lost. Knowingly vacating to turn the country over to our enemy, abandoning Afghans that worked with our military risking themselves and their families, all because of an arbitrary deadline set by a useless President that ignored his military advisors.
