Agreed. Piracy, aka the sharing of information freely (see also: libraries), is a fundamentally ethically correct course of action. Always.

Withholding knowledge for personal profit on the other hand is obviously not.

Should we give Japanese families back houses and land they lost when interred is a great question. My initial thought was 'yes, of course'... but then I thought perhaps we ought to ask the natives whose land those Japanese families had 'stolen'.

I'm not saying I really agree with the position, but I'll explain what I think they meant for you. It was Jewish 'holy land' well before it was Christian or Islamic holy land seeing as Christianity and Islam weren't even made up until many hundreds of years later.

Sure, but shutting down the website is like shutting down the club that the slutty 20 year old dressed up slutty for and went to on the night a creep raped her. Maybe she had a fake ID (if USA at least). And yeah, perhaps the club should be more careful about fake IDs. But the club didn't rape anyone, the rapist did. And shutting down club A for club B to replace it will do nothing to prevent future rapes.

It's almost like we should focus on educating them about how to responsibly use the Internet instead of trying to censor their access to it (which as you pointed out, basically never works).

Does anyone actually think shutting down one specific website will make a meaningful difference? Like... really? Did shutting down Napster stop piracy? Did shutting down Silk Road stop online drug sales?

Yeah, and we could shut down the Internet all together... or we could be realistic about prevention.

And yes, I accessed lots of 'sensitive' material online as a kid well before this website existed. So I find it hard to blame this specific website...websites come and go. I do however absolutely blame the creep himself since they are the one who did something wrong. Not the website.

The only real solution is intentional population control. But I don't have high hopes we ever get there though.

Everyone could have way more resources than we'd ever want to even use. But instead, we seem focused on maxing out the world population leaving the least amount possible for each person.

Yeah, and my tiny Nokia from 15 years ago also had a mic next to charger very very far from my mouth. Worked completely fine though, since it's designed to do that.

Neither of those things provide a measurable or meaningful improvement to anything. The phone is designed to be directly against one's head within allowable safe levels of radiation. And the microphone/audio processing is designed to pickup sound from the standard phone position.

I'd say 'you do you'...but actually, you shouldn't.
